Barbara Ballantyne in Sydney Australia Like Nottingham lace from England or Quaker lace from the U.S., Plauen lace is the premier machine made German lace. These designs are in the Irish Crochet style, which in turn are in the style of Point de Venise needlelace. They are simply gorgeous. The most likely original execution of these designs would probably have been chemical lace. Precise satin stitching reproduce the carved ivory ideal of both Irish Crochet and Point de Venise. Chemical lace from the period (1905) would have been exquisite. It would take a lot of work to convert these designs to a bobbin lace pattern or any other kind of workable pattern for other techniques. Then, of course, after you have the pattern, there is the matter of actually working the piece. RE: [lace] photography
When I worked at the Chamber of Commerce we got the Mavica that uses CDs for the reason that anyone can read a floppy or CD without needing to have special software. (I don't know about Macs though.) It had a macro mode, I called it bug mode that worked very well. When I get my own digital camera, I will very seriously consider gettting a Mavica. I photographed the lace edging that I did for Pauline's heart using the Mavica. You can see it on Lori's lacefairy site http://lace.lacefairy.com I remember that the floppy version held about 10 high quality photos on a floppy (70? low quality pictures.) The CD held about 100 high quality pictures and 600 low quality ones. It was a 3.2 megapixel camera. Heavy, but nice. Hope this helps someone. There's still the Mavica type cameras. The older Mavicas recorded directly onto floppy disk, so you didn't need any particular kind of ports or software--just something that could read jpegs. The newer Mavicas record onto CDs, so there should still be no worry about operating system or ports. I took many excellent pictures on my floppy-Mavica. It got closer than an inch to the subject, so I could get great magnification of embroidery and lace. Unless it was behind glass--the autofocus focussed on the glass, and when you're only 2 inches away, the 1/2 inch between the top of the glass and the lace is 25% off, so out of focus. Then you have to back up and use telephoto. Robin P. Re: [lace] photography
I have the floppy Mavica and on mine a standard floppy (1.2 MB)holds 6 hi res pictures. No idea how many other quality, I never have taken any. It can record a short (1 min) video with sound too. But the video quality isn't anything to write home about. Just kind of fun. It has a good lens, and both digital and optical zoom, plus setting for exposures and so forth that make taking pics indoors without a flash possible. DH wants me to get a new one but I like the one I have and I was able to get floppies for it just about anywhere. On my trip to the British isles that was a god-send, but I sure had a load of disks to haul home in my luggage! I also used my camera on the Met tour (during the last IOLI convention) to photograph the lace and they turned out very nice... better than the Honiton pics on the CD, I thought... and I was just holding it up in my hands and snapping with no flash. [lace-chat] management message
I think I worked for this company once, hence I'm self employed. G Dear Staff Welcome back to the office on this 3rd week of the year. Please be advised that there are new rules and regulations implemented to raise the efficiency of our company. ATTIRE: It is advised that you come to work dressed according to your salary. If you dress poorly, you need to learn to manage your money better, so that you may buy nicer clothes and therefore you do not need a raise. If you dress in-between, you are right where you need to be and therefore you do not need a raise. PERSONAL DAYS: Each employee will receive 104 personal days a year. They are called Saturday Sunday. [lace-chat] Closet Survey Final Results
You may recall that I got some responses after reporting results and decided to recompile with data received thru 1/31. Here are the final results (original totals shown in parenthesis). Total participants 52 (42); females 40(31), males 12(11). Number who make no effort at order 13(11); females 9 (7), males 4(4). Females who care: 31 (17) face left; 9(7) face right. Males who care: 6(5) face right, 2(2) face left. $.02 worth of analysis. About 25% of people don't care: of those who do care, females are 3 times as likely (I'm pushing it here) to prefer their clothes facing left, and males just the opposite. (Originally, I suggested the preference was only 2 times as likely). But we all know there aren't enough numbers here to provide anything but speculation.
