Since I haven't gotten Lace 113 yet, I had a look at Lace 96, and the Bucks
stars *can* look like blocks! Now I'll be anxious to see Lace whenever it gets
here.

Happy lacemaking,

Jackie, my husband is waiting for me to come to the kitchen to cook his
dinner. I'd told him several minutes ago I was coming, so when I didn't turn
up (because I was searching for Lace 96!), he came looking for me (again!). Of
course, now he's mystified as to why I'm sitting here, squinting at lace
patterns with first one eye then the other!!

Butyou're right! It's not just you! What a strange thing! Perhaps if
there's an optomotrist on the list, they could tell us why!

But I also have another question for you. How on earth, when you're reading
Lace number 113, can you remember what was in Lace No. 96 - nearly 8 years
ago??!!!

Must go, he's starting to "humph!!"

[lace] Optical illusions

2004-02-23 Thread Jacqueline Bowhey
Greetings All,

There must be something in the Qld air that is making me talkative!

Have a look at the Tumbling Blocks on page 33 in Lace 113. They do look like
blocks. Right?

Then look at the Bucks Stars on page 35 in Lace 96. They do look like stars.
Right? Now look at them with one eye. They look like blocks. Right? Or is it
just me??

Before someone tells me to get back in my box and keep quiet I'll do just
that.

Cheers, Jackie

Good morning All,

I for one am glad that there is little mail today as I came back from England at the
weekend after a week over there with 19 digest to plough through. As my hubby is away
again I wouldn't mind a few "males" in my mailbox. ;-)

I did get the opportunity on this trip to call in at The Hollies and meet the Lace

My pillows are in a specially constructed cupboard where they are on shelves
one above each other. My pillows have rings for a stand on the bottom.
Putting the pillow flat on a shelf would result in only the ring being on
the shelf, making the pillow subject to wobbling. So there is a U shape cut
out of the corner of each shelf, where I can slide the ring in, so that the
pillow itself sits on the shelf. This works well for me.

It all depends on what effect you are trying to get. Sounds to me like this
thread would have distinct possibilities for 3D work. I once made a lace
edging for a name tag, which I wanted to stand up around the outside. Using
a thread like this would have enabled me to make a wider and more
interesting edging. The stiffest thread I could find was linen which
effectively limited me to a narrower edging than I wanted.

Re: [lace] pillow stands

2004-02-23 Thread Laceandbits
I have got the ordinary 'shelf' type fitments that consist of two metal
strips with slots in screwed to the wall. The triangular brackets that the
shelf
itself fits on are available in lots of sizes (for different shelf widths) and
I use those for the pillows - without a shelf first. The brackets slot easily
into the strips and can be altered to different spacings to suit different
pillow combinations.

They are fitted from the top of a set of drawers to the ceiling so they are
in what would otherwise be wasted space. Even my biggest pillow (24") sits
securely at the top on 15" brackets; because it's close to the ceiling it
can't
tip off.

And I have bought all of them at carboot sales so the total investment to
store about 10 pillows was in the region of £5.

[lace] Thread question

2004-02-23 Thread Jean Nathan
I'm currently having as go at the UK Lace Guild Intermediate Torchon
Assessment (taken nearly two years so far for various reasons not connected
with lacemaking), and one of the finished items has to be your own design.
For the elementary I was told to include sample in different threads for the
finished items, so it's essential for your own design. I've got an idea of
what thread might suit from the distance between the pinholes, but need to
show that I've chosen correctly. So Brenda's book is a must. I choose one
thread that's propabably too thin, one that's too thick and a couple of what
I think will be suitable. Then work a small sample of the pattern in each to
include with the work, and say why I've chosen the one I have. Couldn't do
it easily without Brenda's book. An *absolute* must.
