But *you* haven't been with the group for all those years, surely; you
look *much* too young :) It was good to be able to put another Arachne
face to an e-address...

The pictures of our exhibition also are on the site :
www.athdentelle.be .
Beautiful lace, well-constructed and easy to navigate site. I liked the
lace with the music theme the best, I think; the violins and the violas
especially...

I don't know any French (except one dirty word ), so skipped all the
pages with text only, but was able to "cobble up" enough of passive
knowledge to understand most captions (especially if all there was to
it was the name of the lacemaker or the lace technique ) And I
*learnt* something, too; it seems that "Point Ground" in English is the
same as "Point claire" in French... "Claire" I know from "claire de
lune" (a Debussy piece, I think); what a *lovely* name for that lace.

Like Lorri (Ferguson), I'm burning to know what the "strange
instrument"(tool?) of Dominique's (in the Dentelieres section) is; it
looks like *nothing* I've ever seen before in connection with BL...
There seems to be no pricking and no pillow at all; just a tube with
lots and lots of bobbins hanging from it. Certainly, if someone posted
pictures of the "instrument" - by itself - as being sold on E-Bay, I'd
have said "*not* for bobbin lace"... :)

I also have another question; two, really... In the section on the
"small glass-case" (petite vitrine), it says (I think ) that the
case stays in the lobby of the "hotel" *permanently*, though your group
changes the exhibited pieces on a regular basis.
1) Is the "hotel" as it is in English (a place where paying guests
stay), or an equivalent of our "City Hall" (l'Hotel de Ville - the
house of the town?)
2) In either case, are you (all of you) constantly pestered to *sell*
your lace? And, if you are, *do* you?

[lace] The wedding

2004-05-16 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
The wedding veil is definately Carrickmacross lace. You can see the looped
edge, and some guipure- typical of this type of lace.
I sent to you privately, David, saying the under panels were of tonder
lace - I was wrong, they were the Chantilly lace. The tonder lace was her
handkerchief, which was specially made for her.
Whatever - she wore lots of lace, which was mentioned a few times, so we all
get a look in! :)

I hope this fairytale has a happier ending then the English one! We are
told, here in Melbourne, that they flew to Greece, then on to Tanzania for
the honeymoon.

2004-05-16 Thread Jane Viking Swanson
Hi All, I am loving all the pictures from the Royal Wedding!!
The Danish TV site Avril sent has lots of the Carrickmacross
veil - how beautiful!! And very satisfying to see so many
pictures of it, they haven't done so well photographing the lace
in some of the other Royal Weddings of the last few years.
You'd think we just wanted to look at the bride and groom .
And one had the Tonder handkerchief though the beautiful bride
was holding it to her nose! I know, I know - that's what they're for!

The Australian site shows the panels in the dress so nicely.
What a perfect dress to show off the beautiful lace! Lovely
dressmaking! I love all the uniforms, ball gowns and tiaras
on the wedding party and guests too. Wow! Looks like a
wonderful, joyous event!

Re: [lace] Royal Wedding

2004-05-16 Thread Tune
Hi Everyone
To answer some questions - Anette, Jaqueline - about the royal wedding in
Denmark:
1. The young man standing beside crown prince Frederik was his brother
Joachim. The present queen, Margrethe 2nd has only 2 sons, Frederik was born
in 1968 and Joachim in 1969. Frederik is therefore next in line to the
Danish throne and he will then be Frederik 10th of Denmark. Joachim was
married in 1995 to Alexandra Manley, a British citizen from the then British
Hong Kong. Her father is Chinese and her mother is Austrian and Princess
Alexandra is a very beautiful young woman. So Queen Margrethe now has 2
beautiful daughters-in-law.
2. The temperature was about 15C. on Friday and it was a bit windy, but then
we often have a breeze blowing in Denmark The forecast had been rain but it
stayed dry and the sun, defying the forecast, actually came out for the
happy couple just as they came out of the church.
3. Yes, Copenhagen certainly is a beautiful city with some very old
historical buildings but also a nice blend of new modern buildings too.
Denmark is renowned for its architects and this year sees the completion of
the spectacular new opera house in Copenhagen, designed by Henning Larsen.
4. Jealousy on the part of the Brits - that might well be as this little
monarchy in Denmark, the oldest in the world, could today teach the British
royals a thing or two when it comes to relations both private and public!
5. The veil is most DEFINATELY Carrickmacross, made by the nuns of Connaught
for the English princess Margaret's wedding on 15th June 1905 in St. George
Chapel Windsor, where she married the Swedish crown prince, Gustav VI Adolf.
She was the mother to Ingrid, and Ingrid is the mother of the present queen
Margrethe. There is no certain facts about the production of the veil but
according to Patricia Wardle, it was probably designed by Mrs. O'Brien and
made under her supervision by the St. Louis sisters in their lace school.
Under the open folds of the dress side panels you can see more of the
Carrickmacross lace - 8 metres! The lace has been in the possession of the
royal family for more than 100 years. I believe there was Chantilly used to
trim the underskirt, but whether this is machine or handmade -I'm not sure.
This will most probably be described in the exhibition of the dress as from
Thursday, and I will keep you informed.
best wishes and keep bobbin' along from Avril

[lace] Booklets - not lace

Dear Lacers -

Please forgive the cross-post, but I accidentally sent it to chat, when it should have

Hello all -

Since many, if not most, bobbin lacers also have interests and abilities in other
"gentle arts", I'm offering some booklets here on other arts. They are free, and if
more than one person asks, I will pull the names out of the proverbial hat for them.

1) A weaving Primer (Weave-easy series #7225)

2) Lace Net Embroidery placemats and Tablecloths, by Rita Weiss. (American School of

3) Lace Net Darning in Color, (McCall's Craft Book M/8415)

[lace] Secret pals, next round

2004-05-16 Thread Brenda Paternoster
Dear Spiders
A reminder that you have until Wednesday 17th May to send me your
request to join the next round of Secret Pal exchanges.

Brenda
EXPLANATION
For the newbies, a Secret Pal is a person you send gifts to anonymously
for five months, then reveal your name with the sixth package. You
would
be receiving gifts from a different person than the one you send to. The
thank you's for received gifts are to be posted to Lace-Chat.

The gifts are supposed to be tokens of friendship, not expensive items.
Favorite things to send are sweets/candy, chocolate, tea, bobbins,
thread,
regional specialties, pin cushions, small pieces of lace or bookmarks,
patterns,
notecards, toiletries etc. It's also nice to include something about
the
area in which you live, pictures of your lace and in the final package
maybe
a photo of yourself. Anything you like will probably be liked by your
Secret
Pal.

SECRET PAL ADMINISTRATOR
I am Brenda Paternoster from Kent, England and it's my first time as
Secret Pal
co-ordinator.

--
APPLICATION
Arachnians who wish to participate should apply by Wed 19th May. I
will try
to have the secret pal assignments out by 25th May so the packages have
time to
be assembled. They should be mailed by 5th June.

This exchange will run from June 2004 until November 2004 when you
would reveal
your identity. This is a SIX-MONTH COMMITMENT.

To apply, send an email message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and with
the
following information:

1. Name
2. Email address
3. Complete mailing address
4. Phone number (for emergency contact)
5. Preference for same country or overseas pal. (Remember, overseas
has larger postage costs and takes longer to be delivered.)
6. Affirmation of the following statements:
_I have read and understand the rules of participating.
_I will mail my packages by the 5th of each month.
_I will email a thank you to lace-chat when a package is
received.
_I will notify the coordinator immediately if something will
prevent mailing my package on time or if I have to withdraw.
_I understand that I will be summarily removed from the round
if I fail to fulfill my agreement.

7. Give a brief bio of yourself to assist your Pal in selecting items
for you - stage in life, family, pets, favourite activities, favourite
colors,
types of lace you make or like, non-lace hobbies, pierced ears or not,
food
allergies or diet restrictions (no nuts, sugar, chocolate, etc),
preference
for Christmas or Hannukah or Solstice greetings, preferred bobbin
styles if
you do BL, and anything else you wish to share. The more info you give
about
yourself the easier it will be for your secret pal to choose goodies
for you.

8. Please tell me the names of people with whom you have already been
paired
with in previous rounds of secret pal exchanges.

RULES
1. Please be prompt in mailing by the 5th of each month so that your
secret
pal gets the package by the 15th of the intended month. It is
depressing
to expect a package and not get one. If you must be late, email me
[EMAIL PROTECTED] before the mailing deadline so your special
pal
can be notified.

2. Include a real, usable return address, not your own. Mine will be
fine
for UK use. Overseas please find a friend who will let you use his/hers.
All packages need a return address in case of delivery problems.
Packages
sent abroad should bear the necessary customs declaration.

3. When the package arrives, as soon as possible post a brief note to
LACE-CHAT (not Lace!!!) to say Thank You. This lets your sending pal
know
that it was safely received. It's not necessary to write a long
message--
just acknowledge the package. You can send your thank you messages to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] even if you don't take chat.

4. Pack carefully. A padded bag may not protect a fragile item. Liquids
aren't good in containers going overseas, and are not recommended in any
package. UK's Royal Mail states that anything "resembling a powder" is
best
avoided or at least double wrapped.

5. If you have not received a package by the 20th, tell the
administrator
so she can find out what has happened. If a person cannot continue the
exchange, the pal will be given to someone else so he/she will not be
left
out. Please let the administrator know if you cannot continue.

 6. It is nice to include (or send separately) a personal note to your
secret pal. Be aware, a letter included inside a package could cost
extra
postage, at least in the USA. From UK small packets are OK with a
letter.
You may choose to send the letter in an envelope separately.

7. Enjoy!! It's fun to receive mystery packages, and to send them.

I belong to another list (Knitting) that allows ads on 2 days a month, 1st &
15th.
The subject line must begin with the work 'ad' and text is kept short. This
seems to work quite well. I wonder if we couldn't have that here or on Lace
Chat.
For those who must do their shopping 'by mail' it is a help, and if you
aren't interested you can delete.
I for one like to know about new books (esp.) and products.

Re: [lace] Royal Wedding

2004-05-16 Thread David Collyer
Dear Liz,
I had heard, on the radio, that she wore a 100 year old
Irish lace veil, and from the picture in the paper, it looks like
Carrickmacross. - and a beautiful piece of carrickmacross, too! I hope to
see it in full, on the TV news, tonight!
I did stay up and watch the wedding and saw all the various close ups.
There have been many conflicting reports regarding the lace. However, the
veil is definitely Toender (Queen Margaretta wore it for her wedding in 1967).
There was apparently some Chantilly somewhere on the outfit - though I
couldn't see it. Also the large panels of the dress were said to have been
joined by panels of hundred year old Irish lace. That too was never visible
on TV.

In message <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Sulochona Chaudhuri

>Who is "Tom in Belgium" - I have heard mention of his name before as an
>excellant supplier of B'berg and Branscombe tapes

Tom Deleenheer is, or was, managing director of:

Louise Verschueren, Real Belgian Lace Manufactory
Rue Watteeu 16, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium
Tel. 0032.2.5110444  -  Fax 0032.2.5138578
http://www.belgian-lace.com
http://www.belgiantapestries.com

(details taken from his email to Arachne in 1999)

I have just checked out the lace link, it still comes up but the last
update was 2002 and the "crafters corner" he mentioned in his email
doesn't appear to be on the site. I have sent an email asking if they
are still trading, whether the tapes are still available, and will let
you know if I hear anything (I've also asked if they do the Le Luxeuil
tapes).

When I bought the black, it was a case of having to buy a full card, but
the service was efficient and I was able to pay by credit card. Tom was
hounded off the list for occasionally sending emails about the products
they had for sale - tapes, fine linen, etc - I doubt even as frequently
as Theo posts to chat about the books he has available - but this was at
a time, in the days before the split of lace and chat, when another
supplier was being annoyingly frequent with blatant adverts and whereas
bobbin lace suppliers are fairly numerous, and such adverts were
annoying, those of us with "minority lace" interests are not so well
catered for and need to know the details of the few existing suppliers!

As I say, I don't know if the company are still trading, and have no
other connection with them than having been a customer in the past.
