[lace] emery pin cushions

2004-11-30 Thread John OConnor
Thanks one and all for the suggestions of felt - wool felt only. I hadn't
thought of that fabric. Can't wait to try it. Also the container idea. I
have used small containers as a base before but didn't connect to use it
for the emery powder.

And, Jacquie, yes, the emery I have is very fine. Finer than sand.

Many thanks. Unlike Janice, I didn't get around to checking it out till
just now - 1AM on the East Coast of US, and well into the early morning
(if a dark one, at this time of year) in UK. It came up,
bells-a-ringin'...

It took a bit of time to load; I thought I was gonna get "Janice
experience", gave up for tonight, and clicked on the "Census" to remind
myself - once again - what the requirements for the luggage label
were (I'm currently see-sawing between making the lace for the label
and making some Christmas ornaments to send off as card inclusions.
Both ideas are "distractions" from what I'm supposed to be doing -
getting a pattern/article for IOLI's Feb 15 deadline - and both are
more pleasant prospects ).

Of course, to re-inforce my technophobia, the Advent Calendar came up a
split-second before it flickered off and disappeared, giving priority
to the second click and Census :) But I got them both eventually, and
now I can lay my head to rest.

[lace] wreath boxes caution

2004-11-30 Thread APRILBOBNS
Just a note FYI,
I measured my pillows, and then ran right out to Target to get
some wreath boxes, and found that even though the plastic
boxes were labeled 22in. X 22in. X 6 in, because of the way they
fasten the inside measurement is 18 inches across. The brand
was Style Master. Will check into some other brands, but if
your pillow is more than 18in. it won't fit. They also are not
very sturdy, and the lids were domed so I don't think they would
stack very easily.

Re: [lace] Pillow storage (wreath boxes)

2004-11-30 Thread Janice Blair
Usually these boxes are for Christmas wreaths. The kind we hang on the front
door in America. They are usually made of artificial materials and come out of
their storage year after year. Well at least until they are too tatty and we
replace them with a new one. :-)
As they are often about the size of a cookie pillow they might make a good
storage place. The Ace Hardware flyer today had one for $7.99 and was 24" wide.

[lace] Lace Guild Website Advent Calendar

OK, we managed to get something together in the St Nick of time (ho!
ho! ho!). A different type of competition this year - doesn't require
vast (any?) knowledge of lace, so we look forward to lots of entries.

For those who have joined the list in the last year and wonder what
on earth we're going on about, it's the annual Advent Calendar on the
Lace Guild website (address in our signature below) which you get to
by clicking on the sprig of holly on the top menu bar of the home
page. You can only open the windows up to the current date (so no
cheating possible) and I'm afraid you need javascript (scripting)
turned on in your web browser, so there may be the odd work computer
that will not let you open the windows. Two of the days have links to
small lace patterns - but you'll have to wait a few days for the
first. There's a competition with prizes - this year jigsaw puzzling
some of the lace pictures together again.

That's about it. If you have any problems email us and we'll try to
sort them out.

Best wishes,
Jean and David

RE: [lace] Pillow storage (wreath boxes)

2004-11-30 Thread Janet Anderson
Hello Dorte. A wreath box is simply a rigid storage container for an
artificial Christmas or seasonal wreath. I bought a beautiful artificial
wreath last Christmas. It is a grapevine wreath with pine cones and
artificial fruit wired onto it and it is a little fragile. I want to box it
to protect the finish on the fruit and to keep things from being knocked off
of it. Also I am in the middle of moving to a new city so that protection
is really needed for the move. You couldn't put it together with the
pillows is that this is a case of using something for a completely different
use than it was intended for.

Hope this helps.

Dear Lacemakers (especially those new to such things),

A reminder when using felt for pin cushions - the felt *must be made of
wool*. If it is a synthetic felt, it will hold moisture and that will damage
pins
left in it.

Margot in Halifax - I loved your method of constructing a pin cushion and
have put the instructions in a permanent file. "Genius" should be your middle
name!

Everyone: Always think through solutions to determine if they will do the
job, but do no harm. This is what conservators are taught, and works well for
many things in daily life. Even designing. Think what you want something to
look like and what its function will be. Then, figure out how to get there.
This is especially important when making something that requires supplies in
pre-determined sizes, such as the face powder container Margot used, or sizes
of
frames available ready-made - which will cost much less than a custom-made
frame.

Kind regards,

2004-11-30 Thread mmouzon
I have two of these pincushions...one that I made with a kit that the
Springetts used to sell, and one that I purchased ready made. Both are
made with velvet, heart shaped and lace trimmed. I’ve never noticed the
emory powder falling out of them, and they are many years old !! The
nap (?) on the velvet is very short.
I am teaching my niece to make lace and have given her one of them for
her lace pillow, so it has a lot of lacing still ahead of it.

[lace] emery pwdr pin cushion

2004-11-30 Thread Margot Walker
I made mine at least 10 years ago, using 2 layers of cotton broadcloth.
First I bought round, plastic container of face powder - the one I have
was the Cover Girl brand - emptied out the powder and drilled a hole
through the centre of the bottom. (That is so I can pin the cushion to
my pillow if I want.) The height of the container is about 1 inch.
Then I cut 2 circles of cotton broadcloth and ran a gathering thread
around the circumference of each of them. I think the size of the
circles was the size of the container, multiplied by 2, plus 1 inch for
the sides and some extra for gathering and overlapping. I then poured
the emery into the centre of 1 circle, gathered it up, flattened down
the gathers, and sewed over them. Then I put that ball on the second
circle, with the sewing touching the centre of the second circle. After
gathering the second circle and sewing it, I sewed a piece of lace on
the top. I used a Beds piece that was designed for paperweights. Then
I plopped the whole thing in the container. There's been no leakage in
10 years and I use it all the time. It's especially good when I travel,
since I can push down all the pins and put the top on the container.
Hope this makes sense - it's very early in the morning here.

2004-11-30 Thread Brenda Paternoster
Pin and chip cards have a PIN (Personal Identification Number) uncoded
into an electronic chip which is integral to the card. All credit and
debit cards in UK will have then by next year and instead of signing
the receipt/counterfoil you are required to tap in the PIN. Won't
apply to telephone/mail order but could affect anyone visiting from
overseas who has a card which doesn't have pin and chip. Presumably
you will have to get cash from an ATM, so you will still need to know
the PIN. The PIN on my new debit card (valid from 01/12) is the same
as number as I've always used to get cash from the ATM.

The method of processing cards suggested by Brenda is the one Barbara

Re: [lace] Pillow storage (wreath boxes)

2004-11-30 Thread Laceandbits
Your translation is probably right! A wreath is a ring of flowers, leaves,
ribbons built on a wire, wood or flower arranger's foam frame. They are used a
lot at Christmas to hang on doors, but also traditionally at funerals.

They can be a similar shape and size to a round lace pillow which is why a
box to keep one will fit the other. I haven't seen wreath boxes here in
England
- but then I haven't been looking and wouldn't want to store a wreath from
one year to the next anyway! If I did, I guess it would just go in a big bag
on
top of the rest of the decorations in the attic. I certainly wouldn't buy a
special box for it.
