[lace] Idrija Lace Festival 2005 Competition
Forwarded at Vibeke Ervo's request. LACE FESTIVAL COUNCIL OF ADMINISTRATION invites you to take part in INTERNATIONAL BOBBIN LACE COMPETITION Theme of the competition: WATER Water is the liquid that is devoid of any smell or taste. In nature it could be found in three different states of aggregation: as vapour, water or ice. It represents an integral part of human body, animals and plants. Oceans, seas and lakes cover three quarters of the Earth?s surface. The water is the source of all life, therefore the saving measures to preserve this precious resource and the struggle against pollution of water resources are increasingly becoming humanity?s priority tasks. Water has throughout the history significantly marked also the life of people living in the Idrijsko region. Even the discovery of autochthonous mercury in the distant year of 1490 was related to water ? i.e. to the water spring, wherein the legendary tub maker was washing his wooden vessels. In the 2nd half of the 18th century the ?klav?e? ? special water dams built in brick and stone ? were constructed on all neighbouring rivers. They served for drifting large quantities of wood for the needs of the mercury mine. The cave water always represented great threat to miners lives; in order to pump it out of the mine they constructed already in the 1st half of the 16th century the first ?kam?t? (water wheels). ?Kam?t? is considered to incorporate the largest wooden drive wheel in Europe and is nowadays on display as an example of the unique historical and cultural monument. The terms of the competition: 1. Members of the assessing committee cannot take part in the competition. 2. [lace] Living Billboard Campaign-readable copy
Helene from Melbourne stated on Dec. 16th that Rich People and cultivated people need to be educated about modern lace, and I have answered the call. The Living Billboard Campaign for Modern Lace continued on Dec. 26th when I donned my all black attire and fastened on Lenka's scallop pendant. My first appearance was at Le Monde (Cuisine of the Loire Vallye) where my family and I stopped for lunch with what appeared to be a largely French clientele, before going to a tour at St. John the Divine. The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, which has been undergoing construction for over a hundred years and is two/thirds finished, has always set a standard for employing contemporary and American artists. For one thing they commissioned the Oneida of the Sybil Carter Missions to make a lace altar set. For another, there is a modern altar piece by Keith Haring which he made in Yoko Ono's apartment while he was dying of AIDS. Unfortunately, I did not receive any real notice, nor regrettably, any ecclesiastical commissions for Lenka. On December the 29th I wore the Lambiris Indian Dog piece to a cafe on Bleecker St. which was adorned with modern art and had myself pictured with a modern art wall fountain. Later I strolled the streets around the Galleries of Greenwich Village flaunting the pendant. Although there were no direct requests for information, I am assuming there was a large effect on the subliminal level. Then we cabbed it on over the the FiberArts International 2004 at the Museum of Art and Design. The entries, although impressive in their own way, were totally lacking in modern lace. It was an outrage! Can't we do something about this? I walked across the street to the Museum of Modern Art to exhibit myself to the unconscionably long line of would-be museum goers. However, it did not seem that it was wise to join the line that late in the day. Later we strolled the avenues around Rockefeller Center, stopping in Fendi where my daughter tried on a $12,000 fur coat causing near heart failure in her father. While at Fendi, I sensed that the resistance of the Jet Set to modern lace was being worn down, although there was no obvious manifestation of this. We then went to Symphony Space, where despite my uttering loud remarks to my companions about modern lace, the lady in the seat next to me refused to take the bait and pretended not to notice Indian Dog. The following day, I wore Lenka's work again. I was standing at the information desk of the Metropolitan Museum of Art waiting for friends when I noticed a woman, dressed entirely in black with a single silver pin, eying my pendant. I engaged her and allowed her to admire it, giving an impromptu speech about the wonders of modern lace and writing down for her Lenka's web address. During a pre-theatre dinner at Centolire, a posh eatery near the museum, I demanded to be seated in the window, but due to the fact that it was still too early for the main dinner crowd did not have an opportunity to lecture anyone about modern lace. However, the sight of my husband photographing us led the waiter to ask, Where are you folks from? indicating that he was assuming we were tourists documenting our trip rather than people on a serious mission to popularize modern lace. Later we attended La Cage au Folles, but received no inquiries. My friend Sarah opined that another theatre goer who was wearing a green rhinestone baseball cap had stolen my thunder. Yesterday, I had a dental appointment in New York. A rare dental problem has put me in the position of having to go to a very expensive Madison Avenue dentist. I recalled that on a previous appointment I had overheard another patient in the waiting room talking about having her five fur coats cleaned. So I wore Lenka's pendant to the dentist, hoping to spark some interest. I was especially hoping that the dentist, who I know to be a rich man with a taste for fine wines, would notice it. I had failed to reckon with the fact that a paper bib would be draped over the pendant during the treatment. (I should have worn the Lambiris piece.) However while I was dealing with the dentist's insurance specialist, she noticed and admired the piece and I was able to scribble Lenka's web address on her note pad before she could stop me. I rushed back to New Jersey and was delivering a request for interlibrary loan to the Livingston Library in my Campaign attire. The librarian who has been a strong and active ally in my lace book borrowing was very impressed with the pendant, so I got in another plug for modern lace. She expressed confidence that the campaign would be successful. Many thanks to Susan Lambiris who has been kind enough to assist me in posting my photo journal of the campaign on the community webshots: _http://community.webshots.com/user/arachne2003-date_

[lace] Patty's vieux Flandre
Patty I haven't actually looked at my email since 12/23 which is why I am responding to your question so long after the event. I've seen several examples of what you call vieux Flandre and never met anyone who had a clue as to what it was. My own impressions are these: It would be a late 19th or early 20th century lace. My reason for believing this is the scale -- even the bobbin lace part is much more coarse than any Brussels or Flemish part lace of the 1700s. Even Brabant, which is usually a little more coarse than 18th century Brussels, is much finer than this. The style also does not feel 18th century, or even early 19th century. I have seen other bobbin part lace with similar motifs that were called fine bloomwork which I took to mean a form of Bruges bloomwork in use before the specific style we now call Bruges Bloomwork was codified. This latter is coarser still than the lace you showed us a picture of. So your lace is intermediate in coarseness (scale) between true Brussels (or Duchesse) and modern Bloomwork. That odd needle lace grounding I have also seen in these same pieces. The scale of the needle grounding is really large and coarse compared to any of the historic antique needle laces. This also leads me to think it is late 19th or early 20th century. But I still have not come upon anyone who can say that this type of lace was definitely made at a specific time and place. I suppose the only way to verify that for certain would be to come upon old prickings that fit this type of lace. It has occurred to me to wonder if it was even made in Flanders at all, or perhaps was made somewhere else, like Italy. That would account for why I've met no western European experts who can definitely say where and when it is from. But my Italy suggestion is just pure speculation. Thanks for posting the pictures. This came across from another list. I've told her about the groups I know about, the Terrapins, and that there is a group that demos at the Smithsonian, and about the Lace Day in Baltimore in April, but I've been out of the area for a year and half and figure those of you in the area will have more up to date info. I'm sure any info will be appreciated. I've managed to hook up with Susan Wenzel in VA and another nice woman in Catonsville, MD who does Romanian Point Lace, and plan to take lessons from both of them. But beyond that, I can't find any other bobbin lace contacts in my area. Is there anyone on this list nearby that would like to get together and give me the benefit of your experience? [lace] Japanese tatting book draw
I have a Japanese friend, Keiko, who is a tatter. She has taken me to see lace in Japan, and I have taken her to see lace in Britain. Keiko very kindly sends me a Japanese craft book every year, often a tatting book. This year she has sent me a book that I bought when I was in Japan. I know that Keiko would want a tatter to have this book so it's time for another arachne draw. The book is Tatting Lace, published by Ondori. There's a little bit about it in English here: http://www.georgiaseitz.com/reviews/ondori.html Click on the link to 'sample pattern style' to see an example of the excellent clear diagrams. No need to be able to read Japanese to use this book. If you would like to enter the draw please send me an email by midnight GMT on Saturday 15 January. I will pick a winner at random from the emails I receive. If you receive individual arachne mails just reply to this message. If you are on lace-digest please put Japanese book in the subject of your email. I will send the book anywhere in the world. -- I was not lying. I said things that later on seemed to be untrue. [lace] Lace in Hawaii was Jet Lag
Jane, I was in Hawaii in June. While I didn't exhaust the tourist sites, by any means, the only lace that I saw was on the top floor of the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. In their section on immigrant cultures there was a bobbin lace pillow and if I remember correctly, a few articles of clothing may have had some very simple edgings. It was an interesting museum with a lot of Pacific history and artifacts. If you choose to visit it, visit for that reason. There wasn't enough lace or anything special enough to make it worth a visit for lace purposes only, although finding lace there was a nice surprise. [lace] husband and wife presents(lace)
Other than that, my hubby and I swore off gift giving this year. As hideously corny as it sounds, we're happy enough with each other that we didn't feel the need for anything more, and not stressing out over gifts was a gift itself (we tend to get what we need/want as it comes up, not wait for once or twice a year, so there's not much to give each other). It's strange to many or our friends, but it worked for us. Chris, we have a similar arrangement with wedding anniversary presents. We don't give any to each other, but we decide to buy jointly something for the house that isn't essential, but would be nice, like a ceiling fan in the bedroom or a new dinner set...Much more useful and appreciated than personal things we probably could do without, although I am lucky to have a husband who always chooses wonderful gifts! Last year, I got 23 different bottles of beer individually wrapped and scattered through the livingroom on Christmas morning! (The guy at the bottle shop said to him: going to have a good time, mate? and was stunned when DH answered that he didn't drink beer and it was all for his wife :-) Another Aussie myth destroyed!! It was printed on a dot-matrix printer, by my hand, at least 10 years ago, and where I got it from? I would have baked it, and it would have been eaten - good or bad g. Here it is: Brazil Nut Cake 3 cups whole brazils 1 lb. whole pitted dates 1 cup whole dried or candied cherries 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 3/4 cup flour 3/4 cup sugar Mix all thoroughly so the fruit and nuts are well coated with dry ingredients. Cream 1/2 cup butter and add 3 beaten eggs to the butter. Combine with dry ingredients and add a touch of vanilla or other flavouring. Place batter into a greased loaf or cake pan. Bake 1 3/4 hours in 300 deg. oven. [lace-chat] Fw: READ THIS. LET IT REALLY SINK IN. THEN CHOOSE.
Subject: READ THIS. LET IT REALLY SINK IN. THEN CHOOSE. Old but still true READ THIS. LET IT REALLY SINK IN. THEN CHOOSE. Michael is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, If I were any better, I would be twins! He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Michael was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation. Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Michael and asked him, I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it? Michael replied, Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or ... you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or...I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or... I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life. Yeah, right, it's not that easy, I protested. Yes, it is, Michael said. Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live your life. I reflected on what Michael said. Soon hereafter, I left the Tower Industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it. Several years later, I heard that Michael was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Michael was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back. I saw Michael about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, If I were any better, I'd be twins Wanna see my scars? I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place. The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon-to-be born daughter, Michael replied. Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or...I could choose to die. I chose to live. Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness? I asked. Michael continued, ..the paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead man'. I knew I needed to take action. What did you do? I asked. Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me, said Michael. She asked if I was allergic to anything. 'Yes, I replied.' The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Gravity'. Over their laughter, I told them, I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead. Michael lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude... I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully. Attitude, after all, is everything. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34. After all today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday. You have two choices now: 01. Delete this. 02. Forward it to the people you care about. You know the choice I made. God Bless, and smile,it could be contagious. This particular joke has been around for almost a year. b) don't believe it's OK for US to ignore Geneva Conventions about the treatment of prisoners. Every time *we* ignore the rules, we're increasing, tenfold (given the long-standing dislike of US in most of the world and the viciousness of the religious fanatics) the danger *our* people will face (in and out of uniform, depending on some crackpot's whim) if captured. As if things weren't bad enough... Thank you for your recent letter roundly criticizing our treatment of the Taliban and Al Qaeda detainees currently being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. If they are Taliban and Al Quaeda terrorists (detainees? what a quaint term)... Then why are so many of them being quietly released, now that not only the international human rights organizations are objecting - loudly, since quiet objections to the White House brought zero response - but our own FBI and army observers as well? Possibly because a 16yr old, captured 3 yrs ago, and kept incommunicado all this time, might *not* have been a terrorist? I have a 16yr old step-grandson. Suppose that, 3 yrs ago, he had been captured in some wrong place/wrong time, and nobody heard from him since. And that, when we finally found out where he was, it was from an official letter (in Chinese? In Russian? In whatever language they're using in Kazachstan or Uzbekistan?), telling us he's dead. And that, because of lack of knowledge of the language, we wouldn't even be able to discover, until months later, that *the doctors themselves* put down the causes of death as suspicious... Is that what you're wishing for *your* grandchildren? Cordially...Your Buddy, Don Rumsfeld I will remind you that this is the guy who so callously said - not to a terrorist, but to one of our own, sadly misplaced (in Iraq) soldiers - you fight with the army you have, not the army you might want to have. After having decided to fight the war on the cheap, because it was going to be a slam-dunk... The guy should be tried for treason, never mind relieved of his current position of responsibility. With buddies like that, who needs enemies? As a lover of language (as a concept) and its vagaries, I can't help but muse on how it is used to convey some ideas while hiding others. And on how powerful it is, despite the stick and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me... When Hitler invaded Poland and France, heroic Resistance fighters executed the occupants and their collaborators. In present-day Iraq, insurgents murder our troops. Did Germany of '39-45 also hear of the bestial insurgents in Poland and France, to keep the population's spirit whipped up to the frenzy of revenge? Do Iraqui's hear of their their heroes getting rid of the infidel-invader scum of the earth? It's only words, but cleverly manipulated they can be dangerous. -- Tamara P Duvallhttp://t-n-lace.net/ Lexington, Virginia, USA (Formerly of Warsaw, Poland) To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And that, because we (the un-born-again hoi-polloi) are congenitally unable to make the right (in both senses of the word) choices, the decisions have to be made for us (*just like* in the good, old, commie-world g Never could figure out why the US right-wing hates it so; it's a mirror image of its own ideas...)? No? I love your Michael.
