I think we've long since outgrown the "bring us your poor" stage, and
entered the "bring us your rich" one :) I doubt there's a limit on what
you can bring *in*, though you may have to report to the customs if
you're bringing in *really vast* sums (I remember having to do that in
Poland - *any* amount of foreign currency had to be reported, to make
sure you didn't take out more than you brought in. But they no longer
do that even there). And I seem to remember (from the time I got my
Polish inheritance transferred into an American bank) that only
transactions of 10thou *US* dollars (or more) merited scrutiny or any
notice at all; it's wholesale drug dealers they want to nail, not an
ordinary Joe Schmoe (and/or Jane Schmoe) who wants to spend his/her
money bolstering our economy :)

Also - are there any other DH's going to Denver.

There are always men around at the Convention. Whether - or how - they
hook up, I don't know, having always left mine at home :)

[lace] Re: Conference

2005-06-16 Thread Tamara P Duvall
I haven't seen a - public - answer to this one, so, just in case Ricki
(welcome to the litst!) hasn't got any private ones, either...

At *this point*, it's difficult to tell. Most of us sent in our
applications on March 1 or a little later, and class assignments (I
think of them as "awards" ) have been sent out more than a week ago.
I don't know which classes - if any - might still have empty slots for
you (what lace are you interested in? How much tuition -12 hrs or 24 -
are you interested in?). I do know that the Convention hotel is full
for that period - not only the block (bloc?) of rooms reserved
especially for us, but all other rooms as well.

I'd be interested in any comments listers might have about things like
how

many people are likely to attend,

375 were scheduled to attend when the class assignments were sent out.
As you might have noticed from the recent postings, 38 of us had
suddenly been left with "bare bottom to the ice" for part of the
schedule, and some of us might decide not to go at all because of it.

what participants have gained from attending past conferences

Studying lacemaking techniques with top-notch teachers, often of
international renown. A class like that is likely to invigorate one for
weeks, if not months...

Inspiration from seing what other people - both students and teachers -
are doing/have done/can do. Gives you a goal to strive towards (or
decide that this particular lace is not for you).

Meeting new lace friends as well as semi-new ones (I was looking
forward to putting faces to many correspondents, whom I know via e-mail
only) and reconnecting with old ones - at the Arachne lunch and in
class, in the trip bus, at the final banquet... The more Conventions
(or other large lace "do's") you attend, the more the friends seem to
multiply :)

Ability to buy lacemaking materials, lace-related books and lace (old
and new) "in real time"; websites are wonderful, but nothing as
exciting as when you're able to touch before committing. And, frankly,
I think comparing the goods of 20 vendors in one or two rooms is
simpler than comparing 20 websites (but that might be just me - the
'puter-illiterate dinosaur )...

Have I forgotten anything?

or anything else that might be of some interest, either on or
off-list, to help me gain a better idea of what the IOLI conferences
are like!

The IOLI-Convention-Experience is likely to vary from person to person;
it all "depends"... :)

Depends on what you hope for. Depends on your sense of humour -
sometimes there are snags, and you need to be able to laugh them off.
For me, it greatly depends on the workshops and how well I've chosen
them. My first Convention was a total disaster; I got my first choice
of class, but I'd made a choice which was totally wrong for me (though
the *class itself* was good). On top of which, I knew very few people,
so there wasn't even anyone to bitch about it with That has changed
since - I know my own strengths and weaknesses better now, and I know
more people who attend such "do's"

I'd encourage to go if you can afford it, but proceed cautiously, since
you're getting into it so late in the "game plan". Try to make it a
happy and rewarding experience for yourself. If it's not possible, save
your money for another event. You might be happier dipping your toes in
first in a smaller "situation" - I know that if I'd gone to the
OIDFA/Prague Congress last summer, without ever having attended a
large-ish lace "do", I'd have been *lost* - there were *thousands* of
people...

[lace] Lenka's cancellation

OK, I'm gonna go out on a limb...I know Mom-Avital doesn't like us
quoting from private messages but as you say, it's not *all that*
private (38 of us got it, though not the organiserss) but I think it's
better to quote than have rumours flying about personal tragedies and
such. So here goes the relevant part:

__
Dear Lacemakers,
A letter from a teacher before the IOLI Convention would normally give
you
details about coming course, list of materials etc. This time is
different
though, since I have to tell you that I closed the Silver Pin Studio
and I

won’t be teaching any more.
It was not an easy decision to make, especially not after starting the
business
from scratch and building it slowly, step by step, over the last ten
years.
There are several reasons for my decision: first – the disappointing
NEC show;
second – European markets for specialty high end crafts (trade fairs in
France
and Germany) are saturated by mass produced product; third - booming
real
estate rocketted up the rents in Vancouver so high, that to find an
artist
studio at reasonable rate is impossible; fourth – business travel to
the US is
not as easy as it used to be, in fact, as a non-US citizen I am not
allowed to
teach without a green card. Ten, five years ago, when Canadian-American
border
was open and easy-going, it was never a problem. Nowadays, with all the
new
regulations and checks, the chance of being turned back at the border
became

reality…
I am not complaining, because I have always had more fun then worries
with the

Silver Pin Studio, and I enjoyed the work enormously.
This is just an attempt to explain simply the complex issues facing the
small
creative businesses in a nowadays world… I am not giving up lace, I am
just not

able to give lace as freely as I used to…
The above means for you that you don’t have a teacher for the workshop
you have
chosen at the IOLI Convention and I am really sorry that this has
happened.

_

The rest simply encourages us to go to the Convention anyway because
she's sure the organizers will be able to find us places in other
classes (fat chance! with 38 of us. Besides, if I'd wanted another
class, that's what I'd have signed up for), and lace is lace, but wire
is only a medium, so it doesn't matter what technique we study, it'll
still be of benefit, and the Convention is a wonderful spot to learn
all sorts of things.

Which, of course, is true enough, but the attitude seems a tad
cavalier. Closing the Silver Pin Studio (for financial reasons) and not
doing any teaching in the future (for the same reasons) is one thing;
pulling out of a commitment, so late in the scheme of things is
another.

It places the 38 of us (strange, for just 2 classes; I thought the
limit was usually 12-15 in a class...) in limbo.

For me, personally, it'll be little financial loss - I've not yet
bought the plane ticket, I can cancel attendance until July 1 and have
most of my money returned, and I could have cancelled the hotel
reservation without any penalty, had I been alone (my two roomies will
now have to split the cost two ways instead of 3). I can stay at home
and practice lacemaking in any medium I want, including wire, and save
the $1500 or whatever for another lace event. But what about those
who've already bought their tickets? They're non-refundable...

It has put the organisers of the Convention in an even worse spot,
financially and emotionally. RMLG is a small group, and it has been a
strain for them to organise a successful Convention. Yet, until now,
everything seemed to be pretty much under control. Now, they have this
extra hassle to cope with, with very little time left...

If desirable and talented teachers such as Lenka are
leaving lace teaching it might be good if we knew the reasons in case
other

teachers are thinking of quitting for the same reasons.

I think teachers have said - time and again - that they're not "in it"
for money; those without a regular (not lace-related) job might -
perhaps - come out even on a teaching stint at the Convention, and
those who do have a regular job and have to take time off from it might
actually lose money on it. They do it for love.

Some try to supplement the income derived from teaching with income
derived from vending - Lacy Susan (Wenzel), Holly van Sciver, Maria
Provencher - all come within this category, as did Lenka. But it's a
lot of work, and time spent travelling and I expect it plays havoc with
family life (I smetimes wonder if Susan and Holly ever see their
husbands *except* when sharing duties behind the vendor counter ),
or any kind of personal life at all. It certainly play

Hi Sharon,

Do you mean a Flemish finish?

Starting on the right edge
Tie an overhand knot with the first pair on the right
Note whether you start with right over left or vice versa
Now the original thread from the right is on the left
Put aside the left thread
Throw it out, but not at random, there will be second row of knots
With the next thread to the left
Tie an overhand knot (same direction as the first knot in the row)
Put aside the left thread
Continue until you reach the left edge

Starting at the left edge
Skip the first thread
With the next 2 threads, tie an overhand knot opposite the knot you used in the
first row
If it was R over L, this time use L over R
Tension the knots in the second row so the knots curl under
Put aside the right thread
With the next thread to the right
Tie an overhand knot (same direction as the first knot in the row)
Tension the knot to curl under
Put aside the right thread
Continue until your reach the last thread
Skip the last thread
Clip the threads close

[lace] Re: Traveling with Lace Equipment

2005-06-16 Thread ceztina
To All,

With all of the talk about lace equipment that we travel with, I thought
that it would be a good time to mention the trend of some of the airlines in
the US cracking down on overweight bags and of checked bags over the allowed
limit. There was an article about it in this past Sunday Inquirer and it
stated that fees for overweight bags usually start at $25.00 and $80.00 for
a bag over the usually two bag limit. I believe that this practice has been
in force for some time in some other countries and it's another way for
airlines to make money off of consumers. So before you pack everything but
the proverbial kitchen sink, please check with your airline to find out what
their current policy is on baggage weight and allowable number. And if your
driving, you have nothing to worry about since your only restriction is
either what you can carry and or can pack in the car.

Re: [lace] Disaster!

2005-06-16 Thread Nicole Gauthier

 Dear spiders,

It is really unfortunate that the wire class by Lenka is cancelled
after everything was organized and it reminds me of the same 'disaster'
happening last year in Prag. Indeed, Lenka's class was the first one
filled for the OIDFA congress and then it was cancelled. For people
travelling from a long distance, buying their flight tickets a few
months before the event, it is not something that should happen,
specially two years in a row.

Just my reflection,

Dear Patricia,

I've not lost my map or my Embroiderers' Guild bulletins (a collection that
goes back many years).

51 William Street is the address I went to in Edinburgh in 2001. On a map,
find Princes Street. Where it bends, it becomes Shandwick Place. Two blocks
behind Shandwick is William Street (I have it circled on my map).

Pulled a 1996 EG bulletin, and found an ad giving the address of 51 William
Street.

So, I think you'll have to dig further to find The Embroidery Shop's new a
ddress. And when you do find it, *there are travelers on Arachne who will want
info if this supplier still sells lace books and bobbins!*

Suggestions:

1. Write the EG editor of "Embroidery" at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

2. Write the editor of "Stitch" a second EG publication. Sorry, I just lent
my copy to Tess, because there's a Turkish embroidery article by our friend
Angela Thompson in it. (Angela is the author of "Romanian Point Lace".)
Americans, this magazine is now available at large bookstores - Barnes & Noble
or
Borders may have it. Expensive, but you can take a peek!

3. Go to a news stand and find embroidery magazines. The British embroidery
publications have pages and pages of advertising. If you cannot find the
shop in Edinburgh, why not contact another - perhaps they can fill a mail order.

4. Find a local embroiderers' group and ask them where they get Perle.
Perhaps you've met them when demonstrating lacemaking and can find them through
the organizer, or a local craft or needlework shop may have the card of an
embroidery teacher.

5. You might also look in a quilting shop. The Perle threads are sometimes
used in Victorian Crazy Quilts. Years ago, I belonged to two Quilting
organizations in the UK. Their bulletins actually carried embroidery and lace
articles. Quite nice.

Fact is, you are asking for a product that is usually used by embroiderers -
so pursue from that angle.

And, if you find a nice needlework supplies shop in Edinburgh - please let us
all know. An expert has already told me there is no nice needlework supplies
shop in Glasgow, so don't waste your time there.
