[lace] PBLC website

2005-07-17 Thread pamm
Hi All

I've just updated the Pool Bobbin Lace Circle website with all the photos from
their annual competition. For those of you who have never met Jean Nathan 'in
the flesh', she is in the group photo, front row on the left. I've added some
reports from Spanish Lace Days as well.

Out of interest there are entries from Beryl Millard and Liz Pass who 'lurk' on
the list with occasional postings.

I've still got to do some work to do with some photos from Poole Lace Day and
the suppliers page needs serious work, I'll let you know when it's done.

[lace] Antique vestment artist

Don't know if it still happens, but when I worked in London in the 60s/early
70s and used to visit the National Gallery frequently, there were always art
students sitting copying some of the smaller old masters in oils. Not fraud
unless they tried to pass their painting off as painted by the "old master".
So you could buy a genuine oil painting copy of something you particularly
liked. Better than a print.

RE: [lace] Antique vestment artist

2005-07-17 Thread Clay Blackwell
It wasn't at all unusual for students of artists to copy their master's
work. This was one way to perfect techniques. That's why you see so many
paintings attributed to "in the style of..." or "after...", and sometimes
the actual artist's name is not known.

Today's art students still absorb the essence of good teachers and often
imitate their style, but it is probably considered considered plagarism if
a student duplicates a teacher's work.

[lace] Spanish linens (FW)

2005-07-17 Thread RicTorr8
Hi All --

I got this message from another List I belong to (WIC/Women in Consulting)
and thought maybe someone here would know (or be) someone who might be
interested in carrying these handworked linens. (Wish I could see / carry
them!!)

Kind regards -

Greetings WICsters,

My associate has a gorgeous line of one-of-a-kind vintage Spanish linens,
primarily nightgowns and bed linens. She is moving back from Spain to CA
next month.

We are looking for shops to carry her merchandise. It has its own label, and
is presented beautifully. She has a solid inventory. Each piece has delicate
handwork (embroidery, lace, etc.) and is in perfect restored condition. I am
personally won over to sleeping in these incredibly comfortable nightgowns
and sleeping on these charming, soft-as-butter cotton sheets.

We are looking for eclectic shops that sell some vintage products (such as
Anthropology a few years ago, and ABC Carpets in NYC). Do you have
recommendations for shops that would be suitable to carry her line? We also
need the names of their buyers and/or owners. Any contacts at Nest (in Marin
and SF)?

Suitable boutiques would ideally be located in N. and/or S. California.
Additionally, recommendations in NYC, London and Paris are welcome.

Any referrals to appropriate lists or sources of lists? If you have
recommendations for entry into larger enterprises such as upscale boutique
hotel shops, that would also be welcome.

Please do not reply to me but reply directly to Tina Blakeney:

[lace] La Dentelliere painting

2005-07-17 Thread The Browns

My daughter has worked this as a cross-stitch pattern for us.The
printing onto the canvas was not good, the bobbins in particular, which
makes it difficult for a non-lacemaker. However, the finished product
is lovely and hangs proudly on our wall.
A British supplier used to sell it, but I am not certain if they are
still in buisness.

[lace] Australian Arachneans

2005-07-17 Thread Pene Piip

I will be busy this week deciding what to pack before I fly to the
USA next Monday.

I know that Liz Ligeti from Melbourne will be there because she
is one of the teachers, & I also know of 2 ladies from Western
Australia who will be there. But I was wondering if there are any
other Australians that have decided to attend this Convention.

If there are, just reply privately to me.
Thanks

[lace] weather and costume exhibition in paris, france.

wet and cold ?!!! that would be sheer bliss ... it's going to be over 33C
this afternoon . i'm glad i'm on holiday and don't have to stay in my
overheated office .. without A/C..
i intended to go to museums but with the heat wave i don't really feel like
going. either i leave early and come back in the heat or leave in full heat
and come back when it's cooler either way i've got to brave the heat
with my tissues and my bottle of water. Luckily, some buses are A/C now but
you never know which one .. ...
Anyway, I went to musée Galliera ( 10 rue Pierre 1er de Serbie in Paris,
france) to see the mirror exhibition of court clothes from the Dutch and
French 18th century .. it was ma-gni-fi-cent ! not much lace except on the
sleeves but a lot of embroideries and rich fabrics
i was real surprised to learn there was a kind of ready-to-wear at that time
: the garments were pre printed and embroidered and the tailor *only* had to
cut out the shapes and adapt to the customers

and for once lots of explanations so i left the museum knowing more than
when i came in. not so frequent in French museums who tend to put
explanations in the exhibition brochure (which i hardly ever buy because of
the price ..)

and don't forget the Retournac museum . they need our help as ever .
 http://www.ville-retournac.fr/musee/anglais/indexang.htm
they have a very nice set of butterfly patterns on sale.
Remember that all patterns are new editions of old patterns from late 19th
and early 20ieth century. don't be put off by the leaves and tallies . the
more you make the better you make them. i am living proof of that . VBG...
and for those who speak French and happen to go the Haute Loire way, the
workshop is really worth it. Once you start tackling their patterns you
realise the lacers of old were really clever .
