[lace] beeswax, grain etc.

2005-08-12 Thread Bev Walker
Hi everyone
Have just read through a backlog of many lace-digests...
a few remarks:
Waxing linen is done to reduce friction on the thread, to keep it strong
when having to repeatedly pushing a length through something like fabric
or paper (as in buttonholing, making sails, bookbinding).

If you are spinning flax to use for bobbin lace, take care when spinning
to produce a strand with integrity. Instead of beeswax, use the linen
self-sizing. It is a goo made from water and flax seed, allowed to stand
until a gel forms - wet the fingers then draw the flax fibres to impart
strength to the strand. Linen is already a stiff, un-elastic thread.
Applying beeswax is unnecessary although it could produce an interesting
very stiff effect, if that's what pleases the lacemaker.

In a few weeks I'm giving a talk on handspinning for lace - definitely the
focus will be on fibre alignment, for the handspinners. As others have
pointed out, linen has a definite lengthwise beginning/end. Wool, also -
wool fibres have tiny scales that face upward, which, if the desired
result it a fine, smooth yarn from fleece, have to be facing the same
direction when spun (= worsted-type yarn). If not, the result is fuzzier,
called woollen yarn. Cotton fibres are very short - cotton is spun finely,
and tightly, to give the best results.

To my knowledge the cotton fibres are too short to be carefully aligned
during spinning, so there wouldn't necessarily be 'grain' to cotton
thread - a nap, maybe from the machine-spinning process.

Certainly when plied, whether you look at the strand one way or another,
the ply direction is the same. I can't see that it would make any
difference coming off the spool, unless it is due to nap. But - those
who work with the threads will know best, from experience. I have never
noticed with cotton.

With linen being so definite in its cell alignment, is this why the
continental laces are often started from bundles of single threads? cut
ends always at the same 'end' coming from the spool, or hank?

[lace] Stonewall under Snow

2005-08-12 Thread Bev Walker
Hi everyone and Pene
Thank you for sharing your lace via the webshots.
http://community.webshots.com/album/298168932jiajMP

Myself, I think the framing makes the piece even more lively and
interesting. I like the contrast between the curving pattern on the
border and lines in the lace - it enhances the viewing of the lace. The
only suggestion I would make is that you could have made the border of
the snowflake fabric narrower, for better balance so that the lace isn't
overshadowed by the border.A neutral frame for the competition wouldn't
have confused the judges - but you made a decision to do it the way you
wanted. I like your choice. Lace on ;)

re: [lace] class idea for a convention

I second Sally's idea - it is something we tried at PNWLC in Victoria,
avec moi - although more as an encourager, than a teacher. Two students
signed up, one couldn't come to the conference, but the other student and
I had a great time. We worked on a beginning pattern of her choice, then
tried another. It was perfect for encouragement for this particular
person. For others, it would be the answer to being able to participate in
the convention where taking a workshop wouldn't work out for them, for
whatever reason.

I'm looking forward to convention in Alaska some time ;)

someone was enquiring about Russian doll bobbins, and Ann Margaret Keller
recently showed us these on her site:

Look under "catalogue" and scroll almost down to the bottom of the page for
them. I have no further information about them than what is there

  Gentle Spiders-

I'm back on line, after spending yesterday (Sunday), the day after
convention
ended, trying to stay awake. :-> Kept dozing off, despite my efforts to
wake
up and stagger around the house. Why staying awake seemed so important I'm
not
sure. I couldn't figure out where I was (I kept thinking I was still in the
hotel), and there were these horrid nagging thoughts that I should be
*doing*
something! :-> Luckily, I was able to smash those thoughts into an unused
portion of my brain, and today I had no compunction about laying around like
a
  slug. ha ha!

All of us at the Rocky Mountain Lace Guild had a super wonderful time at
the
convention, and we hope anyone who attended also had a fun and learningful
(is
  that a word?) time.

An update on Tina, the Little Lacemaker - she is sold out. We sold the last
few
copies at the convention, and we have no plans for a reprint at this time.
We
did look into it, and a reprint would cost us nearly twice as much as the
  initial printing!

Anyway, I hope you all are well and lacing like mad. Hugs to all!

[lace] re;'where can I get bobbins like that?'

2005-08-12 Thread Sandi Woods
Hello!
The bobbins, described as having little Russian dolls at their spangle end,
sound very much like those I have!
My bobbins are turned by Graham Hudson and painted by Sallie Reason. They're
available by mail order (send for catalogue) from Graham and Jenny Hudson, 3
Nutcroft, Pulborough, West Sussex, RH20 2JF. ENGLAND.
My catalogue is a little out of date, so unfortunately I don't have any
e-mail or web-site details (I buy from them at lace days or fairs!), maybe
someone else can help with those?

[lace] Lace note cards

2005-08-12 Thread Janice Blair
Hi everyone,
Sorry if you get a double post of this information but it is important to my
lace guild. The Prairie Mill Lacemakers are hosting IOLI convention in 2008
and as a fund raiser we are selling packs of notecards with lace designs by
Louise Colgan, San Francisco (Beds Calla Lily), Anny Noben-Slegers, Belgium
(Binche Blue Flag Iris), Yvonne Scheele Kirkhof, Netherlands (Whitof Red
Hibiscus) and myself, Janice Blair, Illinois (Point Ground Lily of the Valley).

The pack includes one of each design and the cards are blank inside. They have
the prickings for the lace designs and working diagrams for the Binche and
Withof designs. We will be selling the packs in the US for $10 including
postage and packing. They will make great gifts for secret pals or lace
lovers. Please email me for details on how to order. You can view the designs
at the following Web Shots page, it will be the bottom photo on the page.
Please make sure to copy the whole url if it is divided in your message.
Apologies to anyone who does not want to see an advert but as I said, it is
important for my guild in our fund raising efforts. Thank you.
