[lace] IOLI Cluny de Brioude class
Having found out where to get the thread specified for the Cluny de Brioude class (not that I've actually got around to ordering it yet) I considered the other things on the requirements list 1. the pillow which it says should be 50 cm x 50 cm - that's about 20 inches square and I'm wondering why such a large pillow for a motif that's only about 3.5 x 4.5 inches - can anyone explain? A 20 inch square pillow is too large for my largest suitcase so I'd have to pack it up as a separate item. 2. leather pad - what for? size? anyone know the answer? I even looked up the pdf file on the Hotel de la Dentelle web site and in French it says 'cuir (sous-mains)' which according to my large French dictionary is a desk blotter. Is it instead of a cover cloth? Does anyone have an email address for the Hotel de la Dentelle so I can ask there? Thanks Jean in Glasgow where it's still warm and sunny! - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I had the same questions. These are my thoughts: On Thursday, June 15, 2006, at 11:04 AM, Jean Leader wrote: I considered the other things on the requirements list 1. the pillow which it says should be 50 cm x 50 cm - that's about 20 inches square and I'm wondering why such a large pillow for a motif that's only about 3.5 x 4.5 inches - can anyone explain? A 20 inch square pillow is too large for my largest suitcase so I'd have to pack it up as a separate item. I wondered the same thing since a 20 inch pillow doesn't fit in my suitcase. Then I looked at the number of bobbins required and they would take up a lot of space. So I'm going to try to jury rig an 'apron' for my 15 inch pillow. Something that I can pin to the pillow and fold up in my suitcase. I'll let you know if I succeed. 2. leather pad - what for? size? anyone know the answer? [lace] Costume Society of America
Dear Arachnes, So much of interest was delivered in lectures and exhibits at this year's symposium of the Costume Society of America from May 30-June 3, that when I returned home I thought to write and write. But, I have resisted the temptation - this is not a teaching list, and the attendees were mostly museum curators, historians, and university professors. http://www.costumesocietyamerica.com This year's theme was Unlocking the Trunk - Collections, Collectors and Collecting. And, I must add that the membership is very international - many countries represented. Example: I met and conversed with Susan North of the VA, co-author of Fashion in Detail from the 17th and 18th Centuries - the book with the lovely stays in pink silk taffeta (photo) on the jacket cover. She spoke on the subject of endangered collections - and the first she told about was the one at Nottingham. Told me privately that the property was wanted by developers. Sound familiar?? Lovely old buildings, charming area, but will produce more revenues if used for a different purpose. So, it seems the unique collection will be rolled into a much larger under-funded collection where it stands to be lost in inevitably crowded storage facilities. Some Arachnes might be interested in the lecture (related to the Dear Abby discussion) A Collector Goes Shopping: Arabella Huntington in Paris, delivered by a curator from The Huntington Library, California. Exhibit on display from May 5 to June 25 - *still 10 days to see* - The Belle of San Marino: Introducing Arabella Huntington. Huntington was once said to be the richest woman in the world. http://www.huntington.org She spent much of her fortune in the Place Vendome, assembling a first-rate collection of 18th C. art in between trips to the city's most prestigious couturiers, lace dealers and jewelers. She collected and collected - often items with a royal or aristocratic provenance. When she died and it came time to dispose of all the collections - she had an heir whose very modern wife was not at all interested in the fine arts of the past, luxury textiles, jewelry. The vultures descended - every one making off like a bandit. The modern wife was very glad to get rid of the paste and glass jewelry - which was, in fact, real pearls, emeralds, diamonds, rubies, etc. for just pennies on the dollar. So, here is a very good lesson about why we should be concerned about our own simple but desirable collections. We should discuss them with our heirs and advisers and come to a meeting of minds while we are in control and can find appropriate homes. So much very fascinating information was available at the symposium. I've been home a couple weeks, but am still re-living the intellectual stimulation. I am now known as the member of CSA who wears and collects lace! [lace] I have to share....OT and longish ;-)
My dear thready Sisters; It is no fun laughing at myself...alone. All these years, I guess I have made more bobbin lace than any other thread activity. But I do delve into other worlds. Rather recently, have been into beading and met a virtual friend who does such interesting work. For months I have resisted...but the summer doldrums have settled in and I needed the spark of something new. So I thought of getting into micro-macrame jewelry . Interesting macrame using finer, dressier threads and seed beads. Yeah a new dimension. I have the nylon cord (about the size of # 1 crochet thread...but stiffer). Open goes the book..it said to use a cork board. and to gather some spools from ribbon display of some sort and regular ball pins. Anxious to stsrt, I ignored all but the suggested cord (that I had from tatted beading). Well, before I had one knot...you guessed it! I had pinned the piece to my lace pillow, wound the cording on some sturdy lace bobbins, got out the beginner ball pins that I had..and my new interest has turned into an old friend. ;-D Here is a link to my friends photo page. take a look. Jeanne is a very talented designer. She needs to write a book. The piece first I ever saw was that white one on the bottomit was in the 'Our Readers Work section in a recent Bead and Button magazine. I have several of her tatting patterns, too. I really think she needs to try bobbin laceI am working on it ;- http://tinyurl.com/bhe6b So with a grin on my face, looking for something new, I will get back to my old friend. [lace] mini macrame jewelry
Oh yes, I took one look and said to myself, But that's Finger Lace! And so it is, but of course much more imaginative and exciting than the traditional macrame/finger lace that we did in Greece. Still, the basic techniques are the same. Thanks for sharing these great pictures with us. Tess in Maine USA, where summer has finally come. Re: [lace] mini macrame jewelry
Tess it amazes me how related all these things are. I guess there just so many things that you can do with knotsor without ;- . After tatting and bobbin lace this seems so natural...tightening stitches, flipping threads. I feel like I have done it all my life...now if iI can just become consistant with the cords.\ You did this in Greece.?! The only finger weaving that I have done is our own American Indian finger weaving..similar, but different materials. Interesting. Then there is Punjabi weaving from India.Obviously every culture, no matter, how remote has it's own. This also employs another macrame technique called Cavandolimacrame in almost x-stitch patterns...using multi colored threads. I did that y-e-a-r-s ago dyeing my own cord. It was fun, too, and any that I did was very siimpleI never stay with much, to get very good at it. but I do have a great time. David. It is I who is sorry( who am sorry? Phooey) I know that there are many gentlemen lacers and tatters. In fact we have a couple in our little group. My own lawyer tats!!!. But in explanation of my neglect I started that message to go to two groups. I made a couple of corrections for individualty...but that one slipped right under my nose! Giggle~giggle...I started with no intention of using bobbins, but there they were...in that spot under my nose and grabbed on. I will try the meat skewers. I would also like to try tapestry 'bobbins'..pointed and heavier. TIme will tell. There is something special about using the lace things for this...just plain fun. There's a campsite in the Ziller Valley in Austria called 'Camping Hell'. While we know this is the owners name and believe it means Bright, it's still funny each year as we take our coach load of students past on their ski trip. [lace-chat] Secret Pal Thanks
Hello to my Secret Pal Well - the package brightened up a decidedly gloomy week! I have just come out of hospital, after suffering the pain of a kidney stone which felt like the Rock of Gibraltar, and fully expecting to have it all sorted! But - right up until Sunday afternoon, I assumed they were going to blast it to smithereens this week - then was told that, as there were a lot of admissions to the Ward on Sunday and Monday, I would have to go home, and wait to be called back. At which point they will repeat all the tests they have already done, and make an appointment to have it all fixed . We will see. Anyway - as you can doubtless imagine, I was so pleased to receive the parcel! The thread is lovely, so I am going to have to choose the project very carefully to use it - I'll let you know what I decide. I am also delighted with the little tool keeper - and even more pleased that you had obviously made it yourself! The flower is lovely, and I do thank you so much - it will be used constantly, and I will therefore think of you a lot. The whirly note pad is great - we get through a lot of notepads in our house, but I think this one is too special to use for 'ordinary' notes - only special notes will be written on it. The tea-towel is delightful with all those kiwis - it will be used as a pillow cover, so that everyone who sees it will admire it. Now - you must really be psychic!I was due to go to a Lace Day last Saturday, but was in hospital, being dosed up with morphine (and what a difference that makes)! So - my long list of needs and wants wasn't used, but top of the list came a storage thingy for the beads - and now, thanks to you, I have one! So - many thanks indeed for all your kindness, and I do hope you are as lucky with your Secret Pal as I am with mine! I am looking forward to next month, as I am so wanting to know who you are - you have given a few clues but I wonder if I am correct. Anyway - thanks once again for your kindness, and I shall look forward to next month, to finally find out who my delightful Secret Pal is. [lace-chat] Tree humour
-Two Tall Trees It is hard to find a joke today without a dirty word or two in it, but here is one: Yes, it is true, I am sending a joke that is very funny and does not contain a single dirty word. You could tell this joke to your ministers. Two tall trees, a birch and a beech, are growing in the woods. A small tree begins to grow between them, and the beech says to the birch, Is that a son of a beech or a son of a birch? The birch says he cannot tell. Just then a woodpecker lands on the sapling. The birch says, Woodpecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell if that is a son of a beech or a son of a birch? The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree. He replies, It is neither a son of a beech nor a son of a birch. It is, however, the best piece of ash I have ever put my pecker in. Wipe that smile off your face. Dear friends, I got this tonight from a concerned friend and thought I'd better pass it on. David in Ballarat I contacted the company ( S C Johnson, parent company of ZipLoc) and they DO NOT recommend boiling or microwaving ZipLoc bags for food preparation. The bags are not meant to used over 110 degrees. They are made with ( hope I get the spelling right...) polyethalene. ZipLoc does not make a bag for boiling food in. HE DID HIS DAREDEVIL TRICKS OVER AND OVER AGAIN, BUT STILL NOT A WORD. WHEN THEY LANDED, THE PILOT TURNED TO MORRIS. I like any satirical political show. We have some really good ones in the UK. Jean in Poole, Dorset, UK I think Yes Minister, and Yes, Prime Minister were just the best ever. We got them here in Oz, and our Pollies are just the same as yours over there in UK!!! In fact Real events copy those shows too close for comfort, sometimes!!! :)) We have had a few lately - and remember, -- here in Oz we have an extra layer of government - we have the Federal lot in Canberra, then the State lot , and then local govt. Over in UK you only have The Govt. and local govt. At the moment the Federal govt, are the opposite lot to all the State govts., so it sometimes becomes very Interesting, as some of the dividing lines between State and Federal can be a bit blurred or totally opposed!!! :) Regards from Liz in Melbourne [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
