RE: [lace] Battery operated bobbin winder

2006-09-13 Thread liz thackray
Yes I've got one of these and generally it is fine with Midlands bobbins -
I've found one or two that didn't work too well because of the shaping of
the bobbin, but most have been OK. It is quiet and efficient.
If I was buying again, I would consider the mains powered version and the
battery power pack to conserve batteries when I'm at home (but I don't know
what voltage you are on in Tasmania).

Cheers

Hi Lacemakers,

I would like to ask a question of the group. Do any of you have the battery
operated bobbin winder that is sold by Langendorf, and if so, is it is
suitable for Midlands bobbins? Does it work well ? It looks like it is only
a small unit and ideal for my needs and a cheaper alternative to the more
expensive electric units available. I would appreciate any advice that you
have.

Thank you in advance

Cheers

[lace] The cope/cape

2006-09-13 Thread Leonard Bazar
A further thought on the cape, inspired by Tamara's comment

< it was supposed to have
been a "cape", if abbreviated one (more like a Bertha, maybe?).>

Looking at the pricking, Tamara has as usual hit a nail on the head - it is
abbreviated! The pricking notes that the upper edge was meant to be mounted
onto net (presumably machine made net). Christine Springett notes that she has
seen a pricking made so that the whole area up to the net was worked in point
ground! With the net there, it would be a cape, and sit on the shoulders over
whatever was being worn underneath, not needing to be attached to it; I don't
think it could work as a bertha. Without the net, the top edge would be far
too irregular. It's interesting that very high quality lace articles were
being made to be used, with handmade work supplemented by machine net where it
would not make any practical difference. Pamela Nottingham's "Technique of
Bucks Point Lace" p.83 has an edging where the very irregular inside edge was
also meant to be attached to net. By the way, a quick look at Google UK showed
that the Springetts' Pope/Sivewright pattern book is
available from WH Smith for GBP7, so I assume that copies are still available
from the Springetts themselves (or the site is out of date...)

Last time I looked, Amazon listed all Springett's books, including the
Sivewright and Pope book. The only Springett web site I've found is David's
woodturning one. They don't seem to have one for their lacemaking books,
patterns and videos.

Christine and David sell all their own videos and books (some of the videos
are now available as DVDs). Details available from them:

[lace] Blackborne Collection at Bowes Museum

2006-09-13 Thread Dmt11home
The Blackborne Collection exhibit at the Bowes Museum opened on Sept 9. Has
anyone gone to it? I am anxiously awaiting reviews because it would take quite
a lot of scrambling, husband persuading, and even perhaps compromises on the
features of a new car, in order to get there by April 29th. Sept 9-April
29th are not my favorite times for visiting England.

Please, please, someone go there and then provide an honest assessment!

I leave for England next Tues. and am setting off on a lace tour of
Normandy the next day. Then back to London for 4 weeks. During that
time I hope to make a day trip to the Bowes Museum. I'll let you know
all about it when I get back towards the end of Oct.

Hello Faye,
why don't you send this question directly to Mrs Langendorf. She can
answer it best, I think.

Greetings

2006-09-13 Thread Andrea Lamble

Hi Margot -

May be a bit heroic for a day trip - Barnard Castle is a long way from
London (approx 3 hours each way by train with a 15 mile road link at the
end).

The museum web site certainly looks interesting and they are giving talks on
the collection on the second Tuesday of each month so might be worth trying
to coincide your visit with that. Lovely part of the country to spend a few
days in. Maybe there is someone on the list who is more local than me who
can give advice on where to stay etc.

[lace] Limerick lace

2006-09-13 Thread Brenda Paternoster

Hello spiders

I've just found this link via a family history discussion group, but
there are lots of pictures of Limerick lace at

www.limerickcity.ie
then click on Library, museum, arts and recreation from the list on the
left, then select museum, then catalogue on-line, then search by
keyword, and type in lace and you should shee thumbnail pics which you
can zoom in on.

Throughout the whole process the URL in the status bar remains
http://www.limerickcity.ie/
so I can't tell you a direct link for this eye candy.

[lace] Lace at Luton

2006-09-13 Thread Lynn Scott
My mom and her hubbie recently visited a lace museum at Luton in the UK.
These sent me a great selection of photos of the lace and bobbins. They
were directed to the museum by someone in a nearby park and didn't get the
name of the place. Does anyone know the name of the museum as I would like
to use a couple of the photos in the NSW Lace Guild magazine and want to put
credit to the museum, and get their permission.

[lace] pictures of lace

2006-09-13 Thread Tess Parrish
We have been kicking an idea around on the Professor's site: pictures
of actual lace. I know I have some old laces I can photograph, and
maybe some of you do too. I am thinking that old lace might be the way
to begin, but there is no reason why contemporary lace couldn't be
included. The only thing we need to be sure of is that we adhere to
whatever copyright rules might be when it comes to lace.

I would certainly think that any old laces in your personal collections
would be free to copy, but I think one would have to be careful about
modern work. Certainly, any lace made from someone else's design might
not be permitted, unless the designer gives written (emailed)
permission. I could be wrong about that.

In any case, if you have any ideas about this, I would love to hear
from you. Pictures can't be posted on Arachne, but my mailbox is very
welcoming.

[lace] Filet lace picture

2006-09-13 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
Please can anyone help me - a few weeks ago, someone put up a web site where
there was a picture of a piece of filet lace - The Wedding, or The Wedding
Feast, or something similar. It was a pastoral scene. The guy was in frock
coat & knee breeches, (I think, - or something similar) and the lady in
possibly 18th century style dress, sitting under a tree, and there were
various other pieces in this wide picture.

I thought I had bookmarked the site - but it seems not!

I think I may have come across a similar pattern and ...!!

Hopefully someone more bright than me, may have bookmarked it, and can
direct me towards it.

Thanks,
Regards from Liz in Melbourne, Oz.
