Re: [lace] stamp raffle winner

2006-12-13 Thread debbie
Thanks, Bev! I've seen talk about lace stamps many times over the
years, but have never seen one. My stamp collector son would love to
add them to his collection. Thanks to everyone for participating in
the drawings. That's how they will continue. They are fun.

BTW, just after I read Bev's message, I listened to a message on my
answering machine that I won a painting at a charity Chinese auction
that I went to last night! I guess 12/12 was a lucky day for me!

Thankyou everyone who took part and all the lovely little e-mails - may I
recommend a 'raffle' like this to anyone who wants a bunch of cheerful mail

Like the various exchanges, a raffle can happen any time someone wants to do
one. There is no $ involved except for the postage, which is a small price,
if something nice can find a new home ;)

 Lynn,
You might like to check out this site
 http://www.lacemaking.com/LacemakingCircle.htm#ENGLISH%20BOBBINS

 I found 50
English Midland bobbins there for 74 cents a piece. I have not bought
 from
this site so hav e no affiliation to it, and I thought I remembered
 hearing
that you could join and get a discount. Maybe someone else can clarify
 that
as I could not find anything on the site about it.

[lace] Wreath/pillow totes

2006-12-13 Thread Lorri Ferguson
For those in the USA, ACE Hardware has a great wreath/pillow tote on sale
this season. It is made of heavy duty polyester (tear resistant) fabric of a
fairly heavy weight. It is 5 deep and 24 in diameter. The double pull
zipper opens the case around half of the circumference. There are 2 handles
(although they are not long enough to act as a shoulder carrier) of heavy
webbing.
It is a nice red color and has a wreath design on each side. There were
companion pieces for lights and other items also.

All in all I thought it a good buy and purchased one last night.
I thought some other gentle spiders might like to know about this very
seasonal item.

There is a 24 diam. wreath tote with 'soft sides' at Home Hardware in
Canada, sounds similar to the one Lorri describes. I haven't investigated to
see if there are any tricky bits that would interfere with pillow storage
g but maybe others in Canada might want to check out the nearest HH.

Irene, When I use ethafoam (colored light blue) I first use felt or a wool
blanket cut to fit, cover that with cotton muslin (calico in England), then
the final cover. You should have no problem with its being colored black.

[lace] Bobbins

2006-12-13 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti

Lynn W -
Midlands bobbins are the thin ones, with spangles (a ring of beads) on the
bottom - there to add a bit of weight, - and to stop them rolling!
Continental bobbins have bulbous shanks or bottom ends, and therefore the
extra weight is in the bobbin, so beads are not needed. They tend to roll
around on the pillow, so someone invented the square ones - so they don't
roll! (Hooray!)
It seems to be a matter of preference which ones you use. Beds, Bucks Pt.
and Torchon are good with the Midlands bobbins, but if you do something like
Milanese, or other braid laces, where there are a lot of sewings, then the
continentals are, perhaps, better. Spangles can get in the way, a bit , with
sewings.

For online shopping, I have shopped with Holly van Sciver, and Lacey Susan
very successfully. --- Usual disclaimers - I am just a satisfied customer!
They are both in USA so your postage should not be too bad.

Re: [lace] black ethafoam

2006-12-13 Thread kenn van dieren
I supply many of the Ethafoam pillows in the US but have never seen it in any color other then white. I did
contact my supplier and it is available in other colors though as additional cost. So the first question is
that is it really is Ethafoam. Ethafoam is an extruded polymer, i.e.: air added to it to expand the material
vs. something like a Styrofoam, i.e.: a beaded material heated into a form. Both 'Ethafoam' and 'Styrofoam'
are only trade names of materials made by Dow Chemical Corp. and are designed for different purposes and of
different polymers. So you need to ascertain that it is in fact Ethafoam. Styrofoam is generally used as an
insulation product and can be had in light blue, pink or white. Ethafoam originated as a packing material to
absorb shock during shipping. Traditionally Ethafoam has been hard to come by outside of the US but being in
Canada may not be as much of a problem.

Having said all this and assuming it is really Ethafoam, you should not have any problem with it bleeding.
The colour added would be introduced prior to the extruding process and become an intracal part of the foam.
I don't recall the trade name but think of the long pool noodles that are sold for backyard swimming pools.
They are about 2-1/2 or 3 in diameter and 5 or 6 feet in length. And come in a variety of colour. All that
they are is coloured Ethafoam. ( Ethafoam floats very well because of the extrusion process).

Betty's comment of covering it with felt or wool is good as it eliminates any deformities and gives a softer
feel to the surface. A removable cotton muslin or denim cover also helps hold it all in place. But I would
doubt that there would ever be any bleeding of colour from the material even if used with no further cover on
it.

CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR

A couple made a deal that whoever died first would come
back and inform the other of the afterlife. Their biggest fear was that
there was no afterlife.
After a long life, the husband was the first to go, and
true to his word, he made contact, Mary...Mary.

Is that you, Fred?
Yes, I've come back like we agreed.
What's it like?

Well, I get up in the morning, I have sex. I have
breakfast, off to the golf course, I have sex. I bathe in the sun, then
I have sex twice. I have lunch, another romp around the golf course,
then sex pretty much all afternoon. After supper, golf
course again. Then have sex until late at night. The
next day it starts again
Oh, Fred you surely must be in heaven.
Not exactly, I'm a rabbit on a golf course in Scotland.
