[lace] Re: the continuing Katrina saga, and you THOUGHT it was over...
Well, I, for one, didn't think it was anywhere near "over"; I don't read the newspapers much anymore and depend on the blogs for accurate and up-to-date info, so I know that the New Orleans area is still in an almighty, hopeless mess and likely to remain thus, even though Katrina happened 18months ago. The amount of money they'd paid out, to fradulent claims, without checking, is in billions now. Too bad you got caught in the undertow and you're absolutely right that you need to clear your name and record as soon as possible, or else it'll hang over your neck, like an albatross, forever. Re: [lace] Question re Old Toender Pricking
David, the first thing that comes to my mind is a pinchain type of filling done on the diagonal, but I really wasn't able to view the "dots" as you wished--on my screen, there are dots on the left, then a big space, then some different dots on the right. Any chance you could scan the pricking and put it on a website for us to see? If you don't have access to web space, feel free to scan or photograph the pricking and email it to me. I would be glad to put it up for others to take a look at and make suggestions. [lace] Question re Old Toender Pricking
Dear Friends, I am spending a couple of days preparing an old Toender pricking which I've had for some years. This is a beautiful edging just over 3" deep and I am told was of lace which belonged to a Comtesse Ahlefedt-Laurvigen - there are a number of possibilities from which to choose. There are no working diagrams - just the dots. Thank goodness the gimp lines are there. I can easily figure out all the point ground areas, honeycomb, leaves etc. However, there is one area which is worrying me. It's difficult to describe verbally, but it you can imagine a large-ish circular flower of 8 petals. The central circle is about 1" in diameter. It is the dots inside this central area that I need help with. They are simply arranged in parallel lines like this: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . What would you recommend doing with them?? [lace] the continuing Katrina saga, and you THOUGHT it was over...
Gentle Spiders, So, I finally pulled my IOLI - Montreal half finished Brioude lace piece out of the guest bedroom to finish. Took a bit, but I figured out where I need to go next on it. At least the bobbins and threads didn't tangle themselves. I need a diversion from the latest tangle in the Katrina mess. I received a statement from FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program that indicates by their records my house flooded and they paid out almost $45,000 for property and contents loss. But my house didn't flood, and I didn't file a claim! So I've made a series of phone calls to them, my insurance company, and the fraud hotline stating such. My insurance company will send a letter to NFIP and the fraud people (which gets turned over to the FBI) stating they didn't facilitate filing a claim on my behalf. I need to clear my name and my house's status because this could affect me financially if they decide they want their $45,000 back for flood damages that didn't happen, and my home's value and ability to insure could change if it was flooded. Especially since nearly everyone in the world knows this area flooded and all homes a suspect. Bother, I say bother! Meanwhile, I've also pulled out a crochet lace piece - very wide border for a table cloth that needs finishing. It's a UFO from several years ago... Re: [lace] IOLI Convention- Tulsa
I am sad to see that Holly Van Sciver, Susan Wenzel, and Susie Johnson are missing from the list of teachers, and no Tønder class offered at all. :-( Come to think of it, no Bucks either--and no Beds, right? Yes, I know there are other great teachers, and some up-and-coming ones, too. I'm definitely still grieving over Gunvor's death. Re: [lace] Scanning
Hi Tamara I use RBrowser which is a free download http://www.rbrowser.com/download.html Currently I'm using version3 (RBrowser Lite) but having just gone into their website I see that has been succeeded by version 4. Because it's all working just fine I'm loath to upgrade - on the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" principle. Once installed you will need your username and password as supplied by your ISP but once you've done it once you'll only need the password each time to open the ftp connection. Easy to use - you just see a directory window (like a finder window) for all that is already on your website and one for your computer (or you can use the regular Finder window). All you have to do then is drag any file across from the Computer Finder to the appropriate place in the website Finder window and it will update the website. [lace] IOLI Convention- Tulsa
Dear Gentle Spiders, In the beautiful IOLI Bulletin that arrived a couple of days ago, I noted that the dates given in the Proposed Convention Schedule are off one day. Saturday is 28 July and subsuquent dates should be changed accordingly. The hotel brought the dates to my attention when I booked my room this morning. No problem, really - mark your calendar to conform. [lace] Lace with paper strings revisted comment
Maybe Jenn or Alice could take a picture and put it in webshots or somewhere that we could all see it for those of us who are challenged with visualisation. Sounds intriguing. Jenn wrote: "We made this series of flower pictures/projects for table decorations for conference last year. They had to be freestanding for the center of the tables rather than framed for hanging, as in the book." And a VERY big thank you Alice for all the work you and your Guild did for the conference. I was one of the lucky people who got to take a centerpiece home. I have it on display in my crafty area, and it is simply beautiful, the wire frame and wood base are a lovely way to frame the lace, as the focus is on the lace itself, and how open and airy the finished piece is.> Regards breakfast in the US, most of the replies have been about what you get in a restaurant, but at home most of us usually eat cereal, toast, etc., and use skim milk. I eat a breakfast bar as I am getting even lazier in my old age. Don't even make a pot of tea, preferring to put a teabag in a mug to save washing up. Seek out the family style restaurant and you will be surprised at the amount of food you get for little money. Surprised no one has mentioned hash browns or American fried potatoes which usually go with these full size breakfasts. I enjoy blueberry pancakes as a treat.
