[lace] Make your own paper strings

2007-01-16 Thread Jean Nathan
Fot those who can't get, and want, paper strings, and who weren't lucky in
he raffle, I saw a possibility on a cardmaking TV programme if you can get
cardmaking/scrapbooking supplies easily. Uses for wide, coloured paper
ribbon included twisting it into paper string.

Re: [lace] lacemakers in Bavaria?

2007-01-16 Thread martina . dewille
Hi,

I am one of the lacemakers in Bavaria. There are quite a number of lacemakers
arround here.
Of hand I know of lacemaking groups in Schönsee, Nordhalben, Abenberg - there
are
or were still bobbin lace schools and there are bobbin lace museums. But I know
of
more individuals and small groups here.

Debbie, if you or your daughter wants to get in touch with me I am very pleased
to help
you to find lacemakers in the new place.

Hi Bev

It wasn't me - I've been reading this thread with interest but haven't

styrofoam with magic threads, which sounds like a great idea, will have
to try it next time - and promise only to stick the pins in the foam or

Fw: [lace] Re: Angle of corner

2007-01-16 Thread Sue
I am working a bucks point strip for my garter piece, headside with picots
and footside with the worker left on the outer edge. I like the way it is
looking, and I have been using an extra twist in that pair, but it still
doesn't stay straight. As it is a long piece which will be gathered that
doesn't matter, but does that mean I am pulling the tension too tight? I
used to do just 3 twists on each of the two pairs, but read in one of the
books about the extra twist and have been doing that.
I managed a scan of two of the pattern repeats and am happy with the look,
but as I broke a thread after coming through a gimp, I have begun to be
gentle with it:-(

Sue T, Dorset UK

I was taught that an extra twist on whichever pair was at the foot edge
would counteract the tendency for PG lace to curve.

I wasn't *taught* that -- I seem to have spent half of my lacemaking life
re-inventing the wheel -- but I was happy to see my instincts confirmed
by, I think, Skovgaard. If I make a piece of PG lace which is built on a
circular grid, I don't add that extra twist at the footside; I welcome the
in-curving. But, if the piece is to be straight, I do add a twist to the
inner "worker-in-waiting" and to both inner and outer "resting" workers
for an insertion -- otherwise, the main work tends to bulge a bit.

[lace] aficot

2007-01-16 Thread micki cameron
I have been trawling the internet for a lace supplier who sells aficots. And
trawling I still am, have been reading interesting bits and pieces about other
items used to polish needlelace 'rolls', like a cow's tooth or a lobster's
claw, but since I suspect the first will not surrender a tooth readily and the
last time I saw a live lobster was when one resolutely clickety clacked his
way across the tiled floor of the Cape Town bistro to freedom. Then I didn't
know one could make lace and even if I had I would not have interrupted that
dash for the sea for anything in the world.

Can anybody help? I mean, point me to a vendor who sells them (aficots I
mean)

I have been sent home sick today, but a hefty dose of paracetomol later and I
felt a lot better. In between sleeping I sat at my lace pillow and finished a
little silk table centre piece I had started on the weekend. Hated the sewing
up and wished I had 'magic threads' but am so pleased with the end result. I
am toying with the idea of mangling it (as per Arachne discussion many moons
ago). Would the silk tolerate mangling?

Next on to-do list is a needlelace 1/12th scale 'flapper dress' oh, for
inspiration

[lace] Chain Letter from/to Arachnes

2007-01-16 Thread Jeriames
Dear Arachnes,

Today I received a chain letter from a member of Arachne that, printed, ran
to 17 pages of people's private e-mail addresses. It did not have [lace] in
the subject line, but I recognized the sender's ID and opened it.

I am sending this as a warning to all - if you see a screaming subject line
in all capital letters referencing the TV program "Good Morning America", it is
a chain letter promising payments. Bill Gates (Microsoft) can assemble all
the lists he wants through other, more legitimate methods!!!

Of course, if I had not opened it, I would not know my privacy had been
violated, and my address was being forwarded on to many other people.

With these things, even with a claim it was on a TV program, you need to know
that not everyone participating may be law-abiding. Some could be crooks
trying to assemble lists to use for identity theft, as it is one avenue into
private lives which can be combined with others.

We cannot buy insurance to protect ourselves from this sort of thing. We
depend on "friends" to be considerate and intelligent.

Several times in the past I have asked you to remove my e-mail address from
your computer address books. Please do this.

We need to protect ourselves, so we can concentrate on those people and
things we love.

OK, not a "real" aficot or even a lobster claw, but... While in
Montreal for the IOLI Convention, I picked up, at a stand which carried
needle arts supplies, a narrow, longish, very plain (un-painted, no
carving, etc) *bone tatting shuttle*. I got it to smooth out wire lace
but I should think it would work as well on thread lace. It's easy to
hold (easier than a cow's tooth, I suspect ), it has nice, smooth
points (to slide in-between beads, for example) and it has two useful
sides, which, I expect, would make it longer lasting than a lobster
claw.

The "funny" thing about it (and the two bone needles I picked up at the
same stand) was that, although it was in Canada and the vendor was
defiitely Canadian (very little English), the shuttle was in a package
marked Lacis, with California address. Same Lacis which peddles those
BL kits from the very dark and hot place... :)

So, if you don't get a better tip (ie for the real thing), you might
consider checking with Lacis; they might have more of those things. Or
some other vendors who carry tatting supplies might -- perhaps closer
to your chilly Scotland.

Well, Sally Schoenberg is our resident specialist on mangling and I
hope she'll give you a definitive answer, but I wouldn't. Silk when
wet, is at its weakest (unlike linen); mangling might damage it..

Karen, in Malta. Mangling is a laundering process, done after washing,
which replaces ironing. Your object should be damp (not sopping wet)
and a hard roller (Sally uses a rolling pin for lace, for things like
bedsheets -- what I'd seen done as a child the rollers are huge) is
rolled over it. It both polishes and gives a nice, crisp but soft, hand
to the textile.

[lace] Straight edges in Bucks point

2007-01-16 Thread Leonard Bazar
Sorry, should have added to my last on this the way used in the 19th century
Alexandra Stillwell recommends as working best for her - use a thicker pair of
threads (just one pair) in the footside, and work cloth and twist instead of
cloth with it. Has the vice of its virtue - not surprisingly, you can't gather
or ruffle it easily. Would not therefore be suitable for a garter, but might
be worth considering reviving elsewhere, especially if the lace is to be
attached so that the footside doesn't show - though I suppose you could use a
suitably coloured thread and make a feature of it.

I'll continue as before, and say that I like the slightly ruffled effect I end
up with!
