RE: [lace] Bowes Museum Lace

2007-03-25 Thread Carole Lassak
I was lucky enough to see this exhibition on a recent trip to England. It
is, bar none, the finest lace exhibit that I've ever seen. It was even more
meaningful because I got to go with three of my best lace friends so there
was someone else along to appreciate the fine displays. Extraordinary!!! Not
only the quantity of the lace, but the exceptional quality.

Subject: [lace] Bowes Museum Lace

A friend was ordering one of the Bowes Museum Lace Catalogues "Fine &
Fashionable" 'Lace from the Blackborne Collection,' and ordered another one
for me, which I collected at Lace Day on Saturday.
What a Feast for the Eyes!

How lucky some of you are, to be able to go and see all this beautiful lace.

However, I shall just sit back and drool over all those lovely photos!!! :)

What a wonderful collection - and I believe it is only part of what was in
the original collection. I see some of the pieces that they had are now in
the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Hmmm! Another good reason to
get there one day !! :)

Regards from Liz in Melbourne, Oz. where it is a glorious early autum day,
with it being sunny and pleasantly warm.

2007-03-25 Thread Laurie Waters
Over the next few days I'm putting up some lace-related items from my
collection on Ebay if anyone's interested. Spring housecleaning.
Look under lswaters, I think you can search at:

Re: [lace] Odd mix on Ebay

2007-03-25 Thread Alice Howell
Looks like an unusual sewing kit. I suppose that it
could hold the thread, needles, scissors needed for
needlelace so could have been owned by a lacemaker.

The miniature bobbins are cute, and don't go with it.
I also think it's overpriced.

Yes it is an odd but cute mix. The bobbins and lace are at cross
purposes hanging where they are, though LOL.
You are right, the bobbins and lace don't belong together.

[lace] Odd mix on Ebay

2007-03-25 Thread Patricia Ann Fisher
Dear Fellow Spiders,
Here's an odd mishmash of items being offered as a group on Ebay. Take a look
and see what you think! I'm of the mind that the yarn "dispencer" and the
miniature bobbins are two seperate items. Not sure if the lace belongs with
the bobbins. I'd like the bobbins but don't want the rest. In any case it's
outta my price range!

Nope - erotica it is.

Thanks for the clarification. Knowing that then I can see that the fungi
choice is great.

Darwin is probably one of the most broad-minded

So I hear and it's the only Aus State/Territory capital I've yet to get to.
Sigh. I want to experience that cosmopolitan place for myself rather than
just read about it.

They want this exhibition to

be as erotic as we can make it - no holes barred so to speak.

That sounds like a really interesting challenge. I know you'll give it your
best shot. Can I please see a pic of the finished product? How long have
you got before it has to be entered?

Jenny, you are a genius. Not only are you a computer whiz, you are crafty
as all get-out...Thanks for the pin cushion patterns - they'll make
wonderful goody bag items if you'll allow us to use them for the purpose of
gifting, not selling.

You're also an excellent bobbin lacemaker as well...

Clay

Thank you for this lovely complement :) I have just added the latest
pincushion instructions. He is Eddy the Echidna (a Aussie ant eater).
http://www.brandis.com.au/craft/pincushions.html

Eddy may be the last of the crochet pincushions for a while as the
urge has worn off and my work at the Kununurra Visitors Centre is
about to restart for the 2007 season :)

If you or any Arachne make these pincushions could you give me
feedback on the instructions? I have not had much practice at writing
instructions and therefore they may be a bit .. Jennyish :)

Re: [lace] Erotica

2007-03-25 Thread J&F Higham

"C Johnson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote

Taken From Wikipedia:

Erotica (from the Greek language Eros - "love") — refers to works of art,
including literature, photography, film, sculpture and painting, that deal
substantively with erotically stimulating or arousing descriptions.
Erotica

is a modern word used to describe the portrayal of the human anatomy and
sexuality with high-art aspirations, differentiating such work from
commercial pornography.

That is what erotica means these days. I was wondering however, whether
David may have made a typo and was perhaps invited to exhibit in "Exotica
Botanica" rather than "Erotica Botanica".

To my way of thinking, the difference in the naming would/could have a
bearing on how one would go about the project (or it would if I ever managed
to acquire David's skills as a lace maker).

Either way, that fungi could turn out to be a most brilliant choice of
subject and I'd love to see the finished product. An erotica fungi could
remove all tendency amongst the general public to see lace as being in any
way doily fixated and old hat.
