Re: [lace] Buddymap

Japan is the default setting for 'World'. To get a city/town or a zip
code/postcode in you have to click the USA tab regardless of country!

I too have just tried to edit - from the postcode to the village name
and got the error message and shutdown. I think that maybe there are
too many of us using the site at present and it can't cope. Give it a
few days to settle down and it will be fine.

[lace] Thoughts on Hitches

2007-09-15 Thread David in Ballarat

Dear Friends,
I've been thinking about the half hitch on my bobbins as I used them
today and trying to figure out why it held so well and when in fact
it does slip.

I have come to the conclusion that as I make lace, I simply pick the
bobbins up and put them down. However, when I make a tally, it is
then that the bobbin is likely to actually roll a bit in my hand and
that is when the hitch is likely to let extra thread out -
particularly the left hand bobbin of the 4.

So perhaps you could think about this tomorrow as you make lace and
see whether your bobbins are simply going up and down, or whether you
are rotating them a little each time you pick them up, and if you
think yours are rotating is that when your hitches are not holding so well.

I'd bee most interested in your thoughts.

[lace] Crochet History, Annie's Attic, Annie Louise Potter

2007-09-15 Thread Jeriames
Deal Crocheters,

Correspondence about a pattern from Annie's Attic has prompted me to provide
the following recommendation - no patterns, it's about the art of crochet and
its history:

A Living Mystery - The International Art History of Crochet by Annie
Louise Potter, A. J. Publishing International, 1-879409-00-3, Hardback, 1990.
I
paid $40 3 years ago for a very good copy. Lots of historic lace and a
wonderful bibliography. Lovely pictures - most in color.

I promise you visual delight and informative text. Annie's travels and
pictures of contemporary crocheters in Turkey, Spain, Crete, Yugoslavia were
fascinating. The international coverage may be of particular interest to our
international membership.

If you are ever planning to present a program or write about crochet through
the centuries - you need to know about this book, now out-of-print. A local
library or a university library may provide Inter-library Loan service to you.
Copy the Bibliography for your permanent files. It will be useful.

[lace] Lace Day in Virginia Beach

2007-09-15 Thread Cherry Knobloch
Thanks to Cindy, and Tamara and Clay for their kind words about my ceramic
lace. I must give lots of credit to Cindy and Tamara for prodding me out of
my comfort zone and giving me the courage to show and sell my stuff. This
gives me more room to make more!

I'm building a web site and should have it finished in a few more days. My
DH is running plumbing to the studio and installing a counter and sink. I
have to build a clay trap for under the sink and replace the heating
elements in the kiln and I'll be back at work out there.

I'll let you all know when the site is up and running.

[lace] Raffle Winners

2007-09-15 Thread Brenda Paternoster
My granddaughter Leah stayed over last night, and just before we took
her home she did the honours and drew four names from the hat - we used
a sun hat which hasn't had much use this summer!

The lucky names are:
Beth Stoll in USA
Janette Humphrey in Australia
Judy Tucker (Australia)
Sue Fink in New Zealand.

I have Beth's and Sue's postal addresses.
Judy and Janette would you please both send me yours.

Coincidence or what, but Janette and Sue are both past Secret Pal
partners of mine; I sent to Janette and received from Sue!

For the other 104 people, I'm sorry your names weren't picked, but UK
traders have the books and parcels have gone to USA, Australia and
Germany.

Sorry Jeri, but the Western Australian Library system (all public
libraries in Western Australia) does not have a copy :-( I checked
their online index at www.liswa.wa.gov.au with no success. Guess it
is like so many non Australian books, never gets on the shelves. If
you look at their lace selection, it holds so little compared to what
is available on line.
