Does anyone know what this is for? It looks old and interesting, but I am not
sure it is anything to do with lacemaking.

[lace] Glass Character Divider Pins

2007-10-27 Thread Shirlee Hill
Hi! I'm wondering if any of you know where I can buy divider pins with
colorful glass characters on the top of them? I used to have a pincushion full
of these beautiful divider pins that I collected over the years. We moved last
fall. A few weeks later, I unpacked a few of my lacemaking things but not
everything. The pins were in their pincushion (a very beautiful & special
one-of-a-kind pincushion) wrapped in brown packing paper along with everything
else. I remember unwrapping them & then wrapping them again & setting them
aside. I also remember unwrapping several items I needed at that time & then
taking all the paper & stuffing it into a garbage bag & repacking the items I
didn't need right then back into the boxes.

A couple of months ago I decided to unpack the rest of my lace items, but the
pincushion was nowhere to be found. I was, & still am, sick to my stomach when
thinking about it because apparently I scooped up the wrapped pins & pincushion
in with the other wrappings that one fateful day & threw it away

I am now trying my best to replace some of those pins although I know some
are irreplaceable. Holly Van Sciver no longer carries them. I have tried to
contact Snowgoose several times without any response (is everything okay
there?). They are the only two suppliers I knew of who offered these divider
pins. Is anyone else offering them now?

  Blessings,
  Shirlee

I am wondering if it is a old fashioned swift? Wind the thread
around it straight from the spinning wheel, tie off and lift upwards
to have a hank of thread? Reverse the process when you want to wind
the thread off the hank onto bobbins. Just an idea.

Re: [lace] Glass Character Divider Pins

2007-10-27 Thread Agnes Boddington

Hello Shirlee
The onyl one I can think of is Tuffnell glass in UK.
I did look at their website, but it is not very user friendly.
Webaddress is: www.tuffnellglass.com/

In search, type lace bobbins
Scroll down, and you'll come to "novelty divider pins".
On the right click on more details. Unfortunately it does not give you
any pictures of them,

but it may be worth trying to contact them and ask.

[lace] Glass Character divider pins.

2007-10-27 Thread Jenny De Angelis

Hi Shirlee,

I used to buy Glass Animal divider pins through Bronte Beads, the lady
there, Kathy Brewer, knew the man that made these beautiful pins in a wide
variety of animals. If he didn't make a particular animal that you wanted
then he would do his best to produce one to order. I never knew the makers
own address.

You could try contacting Kathy Brewer at the address below in England to see
if she can still get these pins. It could be that the man that made them
has retired or is no longer around and perhaps this is why the suppliers you
have tried already no longer stock them. Kathy Brewer will be able to tell
you I am sure.

The only other supplier of Glass Animal divider pins is Tuffnell Glass in
the UK
http://www.tuffnellglass.com/ But the site does not show pictures of these
animals.

Of the two manufacturers that I bought from in the past, the first of these
mentioned above was the best.

The best of all worlds is a codex with a CD in the back --
but how about a CD with a codex in the back? That is, a
note that a copy of the files is posted on Lulu (or the
other one that I can never remember the name of) for your
convenience in printing out a copy.

I am satisfied with all considerations.
It is very good have feedback of incentives and colaboration. We feel that we
are moving in the right direction.
For the fact of finding something strange, it is another benefit that
arachne.com bring to us: learning to live with the differences.

Thanks, Tamara, for the effective contribution, and Jeri Ames for the sweet
shelter. I think, Jeri, we can make a virtual museum of teneriffe lace (double
"ff", now Ilearned why with Aurelia and Joy). I have some pieces. One (I
think) of 1940's, from Bolivia, a beautifull exemple. I have anothers
exemples. We all could learn with it.

Thanks , Bev, Carol, Clay, Antje, Kate and Carol for the encouragement.

[lace] OT: Sad news of lacemaker passing away

2007-10-27 Thread Mark aka Tatman
Dear lacers,
It is with heavy heart that I tell you that my beloved friend and lace teacher,
Christy Holtkamp, who many of you know through IOLI and else where,
passed away today(27 Oct.) at 10:10 am CST. She was a spry 85 years young. She
has been through a lot lately with the passing of her husband a year
ago and then struggling herself and just recently has been battling many
illnesses. She is now in a better place and with her maker and will be
making the best and prettiest lace ever with her heavenly pillow. Please take
a time of silence and prayer for her family.

Re: [lace] Torchon Workbook by Cook opening bid $66.99

2007-10-27 Thread Alice Howell
I think this was offered before, and not taken. I
don't think it's showing current value of lace books,
but rather someone's hopeful speculation.

The same edition has recently been offered by others
for under $20.

Our local lacemakers like this book for beginning
students. I frequently shop for copies on the net,
including eBay. I certainly won't pay $66 for a copy.
When I no longer can get copies, we'll just have to
choose a different beginning book.

There are some very nice patterns in the book, as well
as a set of basic instructions given in the form of
bookmarks.
