RE: [lace] Jewelers Look aka Linen Tester
Hi These were used in the linen industry to test that the linen was made to the correct standards. It is used to count the threads over a set area - That is why it base is square rather than round. I have several that I have purchased from Antique fairs usually made from brass and they come in different sizes Hope that helps. [lace] Jewellers loupe
In the UK a jewellers loupe is a round magnifier, about an inch diameter and about the same in depth, that you clamp (using your eye socket muscles) into your eye socket. You move the object you are examining closer or further away from the lens to get it in focus. It's usually used by jewellers to examine gem stones and precious metal hallmarks. If you watch any of the antiques programmes on TV, there's usually one of the experts using one. A linen tester is placed directly onto a piece of fabric, or anything else that's flat that you want to examine. The type that folds up usually has a scale on the part that rests on fabric below the lens to enable you to count the number of threads per inch/centimetre. There are also similar lenses which are raised above the object you are looking at either by legs on by a rim, which don't have a scale, but which still sit on the object you are examining. Re: [lace] Jewelers Look aka Linen Tester
Hi All, I have several of both, and find that a Linen Prover was different to a jeweller's loupe - the linen prover sits on its own little (usually square) base, and opens out, as has been described, but a Jeweller's Loupe is used like a monocle, and fits in the eye socket, so that the jeweller has both hands free to hold the gemstone. [lace] I've got it
OK, OK, for the dozens (g) of you who privately and on list corrected me, I *do* know the difference between the magnifier I have and the monocle used by jewelers! At the time I sent the posting, I plainly said that I didn't know why I called it a jewelers loop or whatever. I *did* also describe it at a Linen tester. No wonder new members don't post. I don't recall seeing any responses to this post - maybe everybody else is flummoxed, too? I think it's part of a fishing rod - possibly you stuck a reed on the spindle part to make a full-sized rod - but I'm just going on my imagination and have no real knowledge. I certainly can't think of any way this contraption could be used for lacemaking. Adele North Vancouver, B.C. Thus, we can say it is for lacing, but not lacemaking. [lace] Linen Tester.
I have one of these Linen Testers. They sit on the lace/fabric, and the magnifier is about an inch + above the cut-out base, which has graduation marks around it, and you can count the number of threads per inch with them. It is very useful, and fold down flat, to fit into it's tiny box and is So portable!! :) Regards from Liz in Melbourne, Oz, where we have glorious sunshine At last! My favourite is that as soon as I realise it's a spoof call, I say Hang on a minute and put the receiver down beside the phone. After about ten minutes they'll have rung off, but it will have cost them money for all the time they were holding waiting for you to return. It also means the call centre employee isn't earning anything in that time. One I did that to rang back and said We seem to have been cut off. I said, No, I decided that, as you wanted to waste my time, I'd waste yours instead. and I put the receiver beside the phone again. 10 minutes later I checked and she'd disconnected, so I replaced the receiver.
