[lace] Cantù Madonna

2009-02-22 Thread Sister Claire
Well, I finished my first big piece of Cantù. There are plenty of mistakes,
but I'm still happy enough with it that I'll frame it and hang it in my
office (where no one knows enough about lace to notice *grin*).

The biggest error, of course is the "about face" in the direction of some of
the threads and the strange gaping stitches in the large section of mezzo
punto. I discovered my error pretty close to the time of doing it, but
decided to keep working from that point on to see what it would give. The
result is a very imperfect lace, of course, but I liked the way it looks. I
felt that it added a dimension of potential movement (if that makes any
sense at all), so I left it.

For a similar reason, I left the irregularities in the punto mimosa; I like
the way the irregularities contribute to the feeling of the piece.

If you'd like to take a look, it's on Flickr at <
http://www.flickr.com/photos/35624...@n03/3297490740/>.

I've started on a little Cantù insert for a display tray for a wedding gift.
That is a very formalized design, so I will be more exigent with myself on
execution.

2009-02-22 Thread Sue
I think this piece looks lovely and I love your comments, you like the way
it looks, always a good time to leave well alone.
Also you will be more exigent with yourself for a more formal piece. that
is never a bad thing, improving or redoing sometimes to get it the best you
can without being too hard on yourself.
This is something we do for pleasure after all, but when given as gifts we
want to show our art/craft off the best we can.

Well done and thank you for sharing with us.

[lace] German Congress at Villingen

2009-02-22 Thread nicky.hoewener-townsend

Hello all
Having just seen the message about the Lace Guild Convention reminded me to
ask if any arachneans will be attending the German Lace Congress at
Villingen-Schwenningen 17-19 April 2009. If you are perhaps we can arrange
to meet up for coffee.

My DH and I will be in Heidelberg for Easter and a family event a fortnight
later, the Congress just happens to be the weekend in between (yippee) it
will be nice to get home again.

Re: [lace] Re Miss Channer goes Chantilly

2009-02-22 Thread Janis Savage
Thanks for your kind words Bobbi. I am very proud of my Miss Channers Mat
and it hangs in my lounge in a very nice frame.
I learned a lot when doing it. Sandra Straughair from the UK helped me
get started but I had only done the first inch or so when she returned home
and I was on my own then with only the picture of the original mat for
guidance.
What I learned by studying the picture, trying to see how it was done, is
that in Floral Bucks point today we try our utmost to make the passives run
vertically and the weavers to run horizontally to make the weaving as even
as possible, but in the original the weaving runs every-which-way. The
overall effect is impressive but the fine work is not. After a lot of
thought I decided to do my own thing and try to get it a even as possible.
It probably needed a lot more throwing out of pairs and bringing them in
again than the original, and a lot of unpicking of various elements and
redoing them as much as half-a-dozen times. There are parts of it that I am
not 100% happy with but could not face doing it over again.
At the end I counted the bobbins I had used and it was 350, many of them
used over and over again.

Best wishes to anyone who does it. It is worth all the work and is an
education in itself. You will never be scared of a piece of Floral Bucks
again.

I've just checked my folder on Miss Channer's Mat and I have a note from
Dec. 2004. The lace maker is:

Attached to the note is a picture of her finished piece. Which I confess
is
fantastic! I kept the note as inspiration for when I get around to doing
it.
David, I'm waiting to keep a photo of your finished piece too! ;-) What
do you
figure? Next week? ;-)
Take care and talk to you soon!

Yes, I meant that it does have a picture of the completed mat, and a
pricking, but no diagram of how to work it.

[lace] Re: more about nhanduti

2009-02-22 Thread Avital
Thanks for the Picasa Album link!

My effort was much more modest, just a simple medallion. I was doing
Thing-a-Day 2008, where you try to make something every day and post
it to a communal blog. So the projects tended to be very simple.

Here's a photo:
