[lace] Message from Pam Matteoli in Spain re Christmas bauble cover

2010-01-07 Thread Jean Nathan
Pam Mattiioli sent this message to Beryl Millard, who sent it to Arachne,
but it doesn't seem to gave got through, so she forwarded it to me, and I'm
forwarding it to Arachne. Fingers crossed it arrives OK this time:

Hi All

Happy New Year.

As many of us will be taking down the Xmas decorations in a few days I
thought you might like to know about the bauble covers that Eve Morton has
designed for Poole Bobbin Lace Circle. They are designed to fit over a 6cm
bauble and are ideal for brightening up old baubles. She produced the
special pattern after the Xmas workshop and passed it to me for inclusion on
the PBLC website. Techie probs meant that it couldn´t be included before
Xmas, but probs are now solved and the pattern is there just in time for you
to make a few before packing the decorations away ready for next year!
Nothing like starting early!!!

Take a look, the pattern can be downloaded as a PDF (you will need the
latest version).

Best wishes for the coming year

Don't delete this one, you'll laugh when you see the
return message.

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my
loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've
become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own
friend. I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making
my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks
so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be
extravagant.

  I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon;
before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.

Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer
until 4 AM and sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful
tunes of the 60 &70's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost
love ... I will.

I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging
body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the
pitying glances from the jet set.

They, too, will get old.
I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is
just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not
break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when
somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us
strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine
and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning
gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on
my face.
So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair
could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about
what other people think. I don't question myself anymore.
I've even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I
like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever,
but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could
have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every
single day(if I feel like it).

MAY OUR FRIENDSHIP NEVER COME APART ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S STRAIGHT
FROM THE HEART!

If you forward this to at least 7 people see what happens on your
screen . You will laugh your head off!

Re: [lace] Message from Pam Matteoli in Spain re Christmas bauble cover

2010-01-07 Thread Sue
Fabulous and the timing just right for me, I was given a lovely one in my
exchange and have made one from the lace guild christmas book (well half one
really as I ran out of time having done 4 of the 8 fingers of that pattern.
I have even been buying up a few baubles in the sales in shops with a few
left, so I will be using this pattern.

Thank Eve for this lovely pattern.

[lace] IOLI Bulletin - Devon does it again!!!

2010-01-07 Thread Janice Blair
I got my Winter IOLI Bulletin this afternoon and as this usually is the
Bulletin that has the details about convention in, I tend to go to the center
pages. Not this time. Devon Thein has written a long, long (9 pages) article,
several without pictures, that is a fascinating read. DH kept asking me
questions and my reply was "I'm reading!!" She takes us back in time on a
search for the Empress Eugenie Laces, something I had not heard of before. She
has researched these laces on their journey from Belgium to New York, and, not
wanting to spoil the read for those who have not received the magazine, I felt
I was with her along the journey, even imagining the stink from the robbed
grave. Bet that piques your curiosity.

I was also fascinated because I have a new interest in needlelace. The lace in
question is colored point de gaze and so very, very fine. I just did a clumsy
piece of needlelace of which I was very proud, as those who know me, know that
the needle and I are not friends. :-) My piece was a sample for a local guild
class so that I can pass on what knowledge I gleaned last year at convention.
I took a class with Nancy Evans that I really enjoyed, mainly because we used a
variety of sizes of threads starting with DMC 5.

For my class, I would like to list some good needlelace books. I have the Lace
Guild book and a couple of reference books, but I would like some suggestions
on books that are still available for purchase. I used the Encyclopedia of
Needlework by T.de Dillmont for my examples of stitches and that has a great
many stitches. Mine is a very old copy of the book. Is it still available in
a reprint? Please send any suggestions to the list, even though I have to wait
for the digests.

Re: [lace] IOLI Bulletin - Devon does it again!!!

2010-01-07 Thread Clay Blackwell

I agree completely!!

Devon, in her wonderfully inquisitive/humerous/direct manner has given
us a fabulous romp through a lace mystery which kept me absorbed until
the end. I'm so impressed with Devon's determination to follow every
lead to the next resolution!! Like you, Janice, I'm inclined to study
the Convention listings first in the winter issues. I acknowledge that
I did go through the convention details (briefly), and then spent a very
pleasant time giving Devon's article all of my attention!! The pictures
which grace the covers (back and front) of the issue add considerably to
the pleasure of the article. What magnificent pieces of lace!!! And
the fact that they're in New York just make me want to book a trip to
the city, and schedule a viewing (with Devon in tow, of course!!!)

I usually start "real reading" (as opposed to "flipping through") with
Devon's contributions. Not this time :) Came back from my stint at the
Free Clinic so bushed, I didn't think I could give it full justice,
seing that it was not a litle bon-bon but a boxfull of them. Tomorrow.
Today, all I was able to notice are the little -- and lovely -- changes
to the layout and the new "How do I...?" column which, as a dedicated
"lace techie" (rude mechanical), I find of particular interest. We're
growing; if not in size, then in poise.

I'd like to extend my thanks to Eve also; have printed off the pattern
and hope to make it one day, if I have any time to spare.

Meanwhile... Don't know about UK but, in US, you can sometimes buy
clear glass (not coloured) baubles. You can pack the curly remnants,
taken off the bobbins after finishing a project, inside a bauble, for a
messy but lacy (and somewhat "moderne") "background" to your lace.

My website page http://lynxlace.com/learning%20needlelace.html lists
several needle lace instruction books, with comments by needle lacers who have
used them. Also there are links to the online DMC Encyclopedia and the free
download site. In regard to the books, I don't know which ones are still in
print.
