[lace] new needle lace group
Hello I've just started a needle lace network on Ning, called http://needlelacetalk.ning.com/It is for true needlelace, punto in aria but will also include the knotted needlelaces such as oya and puncetto. I invite anyone with an interest in needle lace to join. It is very new with nothing happening just yet. Please understand that it is not my intention to subtract anything from arachne, which I value highly. But I think needle lacers have a hard time finding each other, and I have done this in the hope of making it easier for them. The Ning software is easy to use, and members can upload photos very easily. Members can start groups which focus on a special interest or open general discussions. Right now tonight there is nothing to see. But I hope that will change in a few days. Those of you who teach, I hope will join. There is an Events feature and this could be used for posting notices about workshops you are teaching. Re: [lace] Early lace
Hello, after my experience people working in the textile department of museum haven't any idea about lace or lacemaking. And how could they in their professional education lace doesn't exist. Therefore it is difficult first to discuss the subject with them and second they will not loose their image to know more than normal people does. That's in my opinion why they held their precious things away from us. Here in most museums with textiles the directors are men and aren't interested in textiles. It was a very hard work to bring one of the ladies I had the chance to discuss about lace from time to time to put in a big textile exhibition also lacy things. And to give the chance to visit the textile department, for money, and could see some of the laces. Also under a high tech microscope. But meanwhile she left HH and the quarrel starts again. In another museum I could come to the responsible lady as often as I want and see the laces, fans and so on but just for her and my fun and nothing more. She had retired about four years ago. And the place haven't given to a new person, because of money problems. So the fun is over. Hello Sue, the macro function on such compact digital cameras aren't the same as a special macro lense. But most of them aren't bad as all. A general rule how to take photos from laces doesn't exist. It depends what you want. To catalogise your laces or make photos which shall atract people to buy them or making cards for friends or or or. In most cases the same phot-rules as usual are given. But if you want to reconstruct old laces it would be better to go and let make a 400 color-copie. On this you see every fine thread and how it goes along. [lace] vintage magazine article
Last year I purchased some lace threads, books, etc. form the estate of a Northwest Washington lacemaker named Paula Russell. In one of the notebooks is a photo copy of an article: Sheer Beauty - Early Lace Fans by Esther Oldham. I am wondering if any one might be familiar with the article and know what book or magazine it might have come from, or if you might be familiar with the author's name. There is no indication of a publication date or source on any of the 4 pages. There are 4 pages to the article: #1 has pix of 2 ladies dated 1639 and 1641 from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston respectively. It continues with a pixs of reticella and a 'reticella fan' made of pierced vellum, another lady in 'Summer dress circa 1678' and pixs of 9 lace fans from various collections (5 are from the author's collection, others from museums). I know it is a long shot that anyone else has seen this article, but one never knows when 'asking Arachne'. If you know of this article, its source, or the author, please let me (and everyone) know. [lace] Re: photographing lace
Another tip to add to all the advice so far - if, when you are in the museum/gallery/display place and confronting the lace piece, chances are it is behind glass. Some cameras have a 'museum setting' to help the focus 'see' past the glass. Whether or not your basic camera has such a setting, check that your reflection isn't going to be part of your composition. You might have to move slightly, or hold the camera at an angle. It might be that low light is an advantage, if you can use the timed exposure feature, and avoid reflected images on the glass. Re: [lace] vintage magazine article
Hi LorrieYou are lucky this time! I know the fan article. It is from the magazine YANKEEOct 1979and I have an intact copy. In another YANKEE (Dec 1976) there is a Bobbinlace article by Margaret Lanchaster of Randolph, VT.. A very informative article, great for this, at the time, budding bobbin lacer. This was my introduction to the lovely Emperor's Lace pattern . I am surprised that Paula did not have that one, also. Now a favor from you. I knew a Paula Anne Russell in Bothell, WA back in the '80's. Lacemaker. We had lost touch and any attempts to find her yielded nothing. You said ...the estate of... I am sorry to hear of her demise, she certainly made our stay in WA comfortable and pleasant. I think of her often, as she was very generous. She was much younger than I. Do you have any idea what happened to her? If not, that is okayI still have my memories of our time together.I wonder if they still publish YANKEE !? My two issues are wonderful, guess I need to Google and find out. Hope this helps.
