[lace] Jean's Book - opinion sought
Dear Friends, this morning I started working on the Poppies in Jean's Floral Bucks Point book and while I'm satisfied it's going OK, I've found one area on which I'd like opinions. For those of you who recently purchased this book, I'm talking about the pricking on p27. If you look at the centres of the larger flowers you will see some short lines radiating out from it. I am wondering whether perhaps they are meant to be raised tallies, or just short lengths of gimp. Either way, I'm tempted to leave them out. What do you reckon?? Yes, I'd wondered what I'd do there, and concluded gimp. I hadn't thought of raised tallies, but as the pattern is open to interpretation I guess it would be good to see the lines done in all sorts of ways. The petals might look a bit blank, if you leave you the radial lines. You could try photocopying and white-ing them out of the design and then photocopying again so that you didn't see the white-out. This would give you a bit of a feel for what it would be like without them. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with! it will be ages before I get round to tackling this piece, as I'm determined to deal with some other projects before starting anything new! I'm inclined to agree with Sue... I think they probably represent a bit of gimp run through to add depth. And I also want to see your progress!! Re: [lace] Request for Stars
Hi Pene and all, Sorry for the delay! I read the digest version and I'm a few issues behind. Please contact me off list and I will be happy to send you the address for where to send the stars. Thanks for thinking of us! On their web-site : http://www.minnlacesociety.org/ there is a request for white or silver stars made in any lace technique. The stars must have 5 points be 2-3 inches in diameter, in size 20 or finer. There is no info of where to send them but I'm sure I can get an address. They are also accepting colored stars that 3-4 inches in diameter. I thought that making a few tatted stars might be within my skill set something to do when I'm away from home or travelling. I am wondering whether perhaps they are meant to be raised tallies, or just short lengths of gimp. Either way, I'm tempted to leave them out. Poppies always have this problem, whether they're done in embroidery or patchwork or lace - the leaves are flat and broad and if you don't think of a way to relieve that they just look like blobs. I think the lace will suffer for it if you leave them out, as the lines add delicacy, movement, and direction to the leaves. At first glance, I thought they were lines of gimp, but in other patterns gimp lines have pinholes beside them, and now I think they're intended to be open veins, created by adding a twist to either the worker or the passive where it crosses the line. If so, they're easy enough to add on the fly. Hope this helps. Re: [lace] Teaching at IOLI convention
Hi Maria Janice's assessment of the 2012 teacher selection progress is correct. We have mostly finalized our list at this point, but thank you for your suggestion! Narrowing down which classes and teachers to feature is SO hard. There are so many amazing teachers out there! If only we had an unlimited budget :-) I hope you will take Janice's suggestion for contacting the IOLI for 2013 Thanks Amy O'Malley Chair, 2012 IOLI Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota Minnesota Lace Society omall...@umn.edu -- Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2011 10:57:16 -0700 (PDT) From: Janice Blair jbl...@sbcglobal.net Subject: [lace] Teaching at IOLI convention Maria wrote: Do you really mean she might be invited to teach in MN in 2012? I went to several weekend courses with Joyce when I fairly new to lacemaking and was saddened by her death. When I later heard that Joyce's daughter Maggy wanted to publish her mother's patterns to raise money for cancer research, I was pleased to be able to help her. For various reasons it has taken rather a long time to get the patterns into print but now that the book is here I hope that it will be enjoyed by all lovers of Bucks Point lace. All the profits Maggy and I make from the sale of the book will be donated to further cancer research. [lace] Chopstick bobbins
I'm just learning how to make bobbin lace, and while I've purchased enough square bobbins to work with until I get the nerve to try a big project, I am curious about how you whittled the chopstick bobbins. Did you work with the larger end and cut off the narrow end? I'd be curious to see the pictures you mentioned. I'm fascinated! They were the first bobbins I owned and were wittled from those cheap wooden Chinese chopsticks given to me by the parents of a piano student who owned the Tai Hung Tol Restaurant in Darwin. They're pretty rough but even today I love to use them for gimps as they don't roll (having square sides!) RE: [lace] Jean's Book - opinion sought
What if you 'laid out' a pair of passives at this/these areas and then 'twisted the passives' before adding them back in at the end of the line. This would leave a raised twist of threads which would add subtle liniar detail at that poing. This might not be a good idea if one really intends to use the handkerchief as it might get caught on things - but then there are raised petals on Point de Gauze pieces. I think that they are probably just short lengths of gimp, and being a gardener as well as lace maker feel that they are an important feature of a poppy and need to be there, but as the lace maker it is entirely your decision. As usual awaiting progress reports with glee. David, please could you show the finished piece of Chantilly as I have kept records of progress and thats the last piece of the puzzle. [lace] Re: Chopstick Bobbins
I have been using chopstick bobbins for many years. I bought a few packets of twenty from a Chinese supply store for a cost of approx. $1.20 for twenty. I cut them in half and then got really upmarket when I put a rubber band on one end. I didn't try whittling a neck on the bobbin and have never felt the need. The end with the square cut is the best as they don't roll as much. I could probably put a spangle on the round end but haven't bothered. Bobbins with spangles are very pretty and it is good to have them as well but I find, for myself, that the chopstick bobbins work really well as I have fairly large hands and the normal bobbin tends to get lost at time. I can certainly recommend them as an addition to your bobbin store. I also keep a number of them loaded with coloured thread to use for making samples when trying a new stitch. Although I learnt to make lace some years ago I still class myself as a beginner. I am currently working on a piece from Miniature Bobbin Lace, Roz Snowden, P101 Patchwork Tablecloth. I have blown it up from the 1/12th original size as my eyesight is not as good as it was. Each of the four quarters has 28 7x7 motifs with many different stitches. Needless to say my samples bobbins have been working overtime. I am learning many new stitches with the help of my friend/teacher and my samples bobbins.
