[lace] Vintage - Old - Antique
I have noticed these labels being thrown about and was wondering what the differences are. I particularly noticed it on ebay. I always assumed antique is for anything at least 100 years old. Vintage would be for something less than 100 years old? Am I wrong? Greetings Nath - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Vintage - Old - Antique
In the UK, an antique has to be over 100 years old. So currently anything before 1911 is classed as antique. Old and vintage are both open to interpretation - could be 50 years old, could be last week. Could be related to the expected life of the item, or could be totally a personal view. Anything listed as vintage on Ebay I take as being anything made last week or before, but sellers seem to think that having the label vintage added would make it more desirable. Other suspect descriptions for me are rare, bobbin laceand collectable. Re: [lace] Vintage - Old - Antique
Hi Spiders, I agree with Nath that antiques should be 100 year or more old. If it is less but not of the present era it should be vintage. Sometimes Antique and Vintage are misused by traders in the hope of making more money by stating something is antique when it is not. Buyer beware! There is far more vintage than antique lace. Also, be very careful as to descriptions. I have seen crochet described as bobbin lace and the finest Chantilly lace as machine lace (and visa versa) :-(. And these are just a few examples. Some traders genuinely don't know and will put corrections on their posting; others refuse, ignore or can be a little abusive. Happy lace making, Joepie from summery Sussex. -Original Message- From: Nathalie Sent: Thursday, July 28, 2011 8:21 AM To: Arachne Subject: [lace] Vintage - Old - Antique I have noticed these labels being thrown about and was wondering what the differences are. Re: [lace] Vintage - Old - Antique
To add to the confusion about terminology, in the US, antique can mean anything over 50 years old. This may apply only to cars (where over 25 is vintage), but I have a niggling suspicion that it applies to other things as well. So when US sellers use these terms, they may be accurate. I spend most of my lace time learning the old, traditional lace forms. Bucks, Tonder, Torchon, Flanders, Duchesse, Withof, and in the future, Beds and Binche. This is the second time in two days I have had my horizons expanded by what can be done with the medium by such creative people. Thank you so very much for bringing these things to me. It has always been my experience when re-entering the U.S. that items Customs allows as antiques must be 100 years old to qualify. Therefore, I think of all items over 100 as being antique. Hello Fellow Arachnids, I have been away for five months (terrible withdrawal symptoms from a lack of lace and Arachne ...) looking after elderly and quite poorly parents, but am back now, and hoping I haven't forgotten everything about lace! But - Donna's new pillow reninded me of my new(ish) acquisition. When I rushed up to North Norfolk to look after my parents, I had my very large lace pillow in the car - providentally. On one of the more pleasant days, I took my pillow outside, with my stand. The phone rang, I stood up, and as said lace piow is large and heavy, it decided to topple off the 'table' part of the stand. A neighbour heard my chuntering, and popped his head over the fence, asked what on earth was the matter, and what on earth was I doing!I explained, and told him why I was a tad disgruntled, upon which he took the stand away, and brought it back several days later with an adaptation - a much larger 'table' bit, all beautifully stained, and ready to go. I am now delighted with it - but am wondering just how I can persuage him that, as he has now retired from his carpentry business, he needs a small lathe to make me loads more bobbins! [lace] Skansk, tensioning the work a pin from Brioude
Hello All! My beans insertion is off the pillow I've posted some pics on webshots. While I'm no expert, I finished enough to have a small strip for a CQ project I think I know what I'm doing for the next time if there is one! The linen embroidery thread is quite robust so it should hold up to use/abuse laundry. Stupid question for the day--since tension was improved by using TCTC rather than CTCT, is that a hint that could/should be applied to other types of lace where tension is an issue, i.e. Milanese?? The strip was worked with a dozen pins, including those that held the gingham on the roller. No wonder this lace was developed when pins were expensive! I also posted a pic of my lace pin from Brioude a pair of bobbins from Belgium. If anyone has info on the bobbins, please let me know as I've not seen any others like them. I've received 2 postcards from Janet Theaker--one of the newlyweds another of York. Many thanks. My cards are idling on my desk b! ut haven't made it to the post box yet! Deadlines, deadlines. Re: [lace] Kate's gown and the Queen's reaction to the display
This is late, but I'd sent it to Ruth, and forgot to send it to the group as a whole. But I think it should be heard, as I'm sure the discussion of the Duchess of Cambridge's wedding gown is not over. This is a great website for those obsessed with The Gown. The setting for The Gown is a bit off-putting, although I must disagree with HRM. It is not horrid. That is a bit strong. Although I am reminded of Ringwraiths, but that's just me. One comment on the website is that Kate wears the clothes, the clothes don't wear her. I believe that is at the bottom of a lot of the disappointment. I'm sure all the contributors to this thread sat riveted to the telly on The Day. I certainly did, with tea and scones at my side, before 5 a.m.. The star was not The Gown. The star was Kate, in the gown. She, with her lovely personality is missing from the display, and I think that is what is really the problem. No matter how The Gown is displayed, Kate will not be in it. We can dissect the lace, the cut, the construction, but without the wearer, it's just not the same. Oh my dear! You must tell him that he has earned his wings with lacemakers and as a reward, he now has the opportunity to make new stands for lacemakers from all over the world!!! You may want to ease his anxiety by telling him that his requests will be very manageable, given our very shallow pockets and our relatively small numbers. Still, if he makes a stunning stand which is celebrated on Arachne, he may have more trade than he can manage!
