[lace] knitty gritty, bone weaver's song, lace instruction & postcards
Hello All! After knitting myself silly over the past few weeks, what should I find? A HUGE error so far back that it was easier to start over so today was the day. Ugh--there's been some kicking, screaming & gnashing of teeth! Thanks Laurie for posting the link to the song--I needed cheering up. It's been forwarded to others who will appreciate it as well. Thanks Jeri for posting about the lace stamps & the instructions in the IOLI bulletin. I received a set of the stamps as a gift some number of years ago, even before I made any bobbin lace! Now that would make a cute picture--real lace matted/framed with lace stamps. H. Thanks Julie, your treasure trove of postcards arrived today. Hope everyone has had as much fun with the postcards as I have. The geography lessons alone have been priceless! And I've recycled the amazing stamps to a young stamp collector. I've also discovered another reason why the USPS (postal service) is broke--no one has postal rates a! s low as the US. Re: [lace] unusual lace pillows
This reminds meAfter seeing the Friendship Pillow picture, we tried a similar thing with our Try Me pillow at county fair. A 24" cookie pillow was set up with three little 'fish' prickings so we could have three people at a time trying it. The three projects fit on the pillow nicely, but one person could not keep up with helping three newbies at a time. Also, having little projects meant that bobbins had to be rewound after each person finished. It took one person full time to keep bobbins prepared, and at least two people to assist the newbies. We never did it again. We reverted back to the normal single Try Me pillow with a snake pattern so it took only one person to supervise and assist. We had about one snake a day completed, so it wasn't such a big chore to re-set it. The last person who worked on the snake got to keep it. Alice in Oregon... where the days are finally warm, now that summer is about over. Wineries are very worried that the grapes will not ripen this year. Our nights are still cool which isn't good for the crops. - Original Message - I think Kathy Kirchner has a "Friendship Pillow". I remember seeing one in her catalog many years ago called a "Gossip Pillow." - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Re: unusual lace pillows
I remember back in 2000 or 2001 demonstrating with some of the members of L.A.C.E. Guild at a park in Joliet, IL. Someone(could have been Kathy Kirchner) had set up their gossip pillow. We had a ball! 4 of us at a time would sit around facing each other on this round padded table with 4 attached rollers and laced and chatted the day away with lots of people coming by to watch. It would be fun to make one, but I would need to find 3 other lacers in my immediate area to justify that. Otherwise would gather dust with the other pillows I made. :-\ Just reminiscing -- Mark, aka Tatman website: http://www.tat-man.net blog: http://tat-man.net/blog Magic Thread Shop: http://www.tat-man.net/tatterville/tatshop/tatshop.html email: tat...@tat-man.net Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/TatmanBobbin On 8/26/11 9:59 AM, "Diane Williams" wrote: > I think Kathy Kirchner has a "Friendship Pillow". Re: [lace] Unusual lace pillows - Gossip Pillow
Dear Catherine, Just happened to have a look through my old IOLI bulletins yesterday. Especially noted the "Gossip Pillow" on the back cover of Volume 13, Number 4, dated Summer 1993. This is part of a collection belonging to Patsy Anderson, formerly of Utah but now living in Florida. The article inside the magazine was about her lace pillow collection. Patsy is one of 3 council members representing American members of OIDFA. Catherine, you can find contact information in the centerfold of the Number 4, 2010, OIDFA bulletin. In the interest of protecting privacy, I'll not put in this memo which can be accessed by all sorts of people, including some with no connection to lace. Go to _http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html_ (http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html) and enter "Gossip Pillow" in the Search box for a little more information. Incidentally, this old IOLI bulletin contains information and pictures of the block of 4 lace stamps issued by the U.S. Postal Service on the inside back cover, plus modified directions for making the laces shown on the stamps. A nice quote from a postal official: "Do you realize what you have done? You have no money, no lobby, a very tiny constituency and you got a Stamp!" The article is published in PDF file on the University of Illinois Spurlock Museum web site: Explorations, Spurlock Museum, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign http://www.spurlock.uiuc.edu/explorations/online/whyknot/princess1.html More info than my first lace teacher and I were able to find. Doris Southard has a photo of the Princess pillow in her book, somewhere early on. It was made by the Torchon Lace Company of St Louis Mo. The Missouri Historical Society had a Princess pillow. It looked like it was in use but it had been faked. We tried to find out more about the Torchon Lace Co. It was in city directories in 1904 and 1905 but that was all we found. Happy hunting. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachne.modera...@gmail.com.
