[lace] A thought about demonstrating etc

2011-10-24 Thread Gray, Alison J
Hi

I have been following the discussion about demonstrating with interest and
have had a thought about opportunities for demonstrating.

In the UK in recent years there has been a fashion for holding Christmas tree
festivals in the weeks leading up to Christmas in churches, our church is
holding their first one at the end of November. If you don't know, the church
approaches church members and local organisations set up a tree in the church.
The church is open to visitors for a weekend or longer.

This could be a good chance to get our lace seen, lace Christmas decorations
are both easy to make and good to look at. And churches need to be manned, so
an opportunity to demonstrate, in the northern hemisphere light could be a
problem, but this could create a good opportunity to get lace seen and talked
about.

I'm definitely going to see if I can get to mind the church while our festival
is on, and take a lace pillow, even though I've not got enough time to display
a tree.

Alison in Colchester, Essex, UK where it's a lovely sunny autumn day, although
a bit breezy.

I really like the poster, Mark, but I wondered if S.W.A.T. in lace
terminology stands for Started With A Twist?

Perhaps Noelene could write a poem to be sung to the tune of 'It started with
a kiss' to go with the poster and the new wording!

[lace] Demo / christmas

2011-10-24 Thread Jo
You could make a start with christmas stable figures and have the rest of
the patterns on display. Or mix your lace figures between other type(s) of
crafty figures.

A fee? I did it out of enjoyment and for others to enjoy. Strictly from my
heart. Giving me proper credit is good enough for me. I guess it already is
stamped with a copyright via the date of the file when I created it. I
could be wrong on that. Thanks for asking.

Glad you can use it!

HAHAI was trying to think of what the acronym for SWAT would be in
lacemaking terms as I was working on the graphic. I like your idea!

Sorry Pat, that song wasn't familiar to me, so I Googled it - found out it
was a 1982 number and when I played the UTube video, it didn't ring any
bells.

However, my old Some People poem (my favourite) can be sung to the tune of
My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean

Some people knit wool into blankets
Some crochet with treble and chain.
Some people cut lovely new fabric
Just to sew it together again.

Bring back, bring back, bring back my bobbins to me, to me.
Bring back, bring back, bring back my bobbins to me.

But me, I like to use bobbins
And weave patterns in thread without fear.
And if people should say it's so useless,
So are peacocks and rainbows, my dear.

(Are you still on Arachne, Sulochola?)
(And for tatters, the word bobbins can be replaced by shuttles)

[lace] Another place to demonstrate

2011-10-24 Thread Lyn Bailey
I have noticed that a very, very large number of lacemakers also knit. The
same may go for weavers, but since bringing a loom for handwork isn’t
practical, I don’t notice that as much. Anyhow, there are 2 very popular
wool conventions in the middle Atlantic states, the Maryland Sheep and Wool,
and the New York State Sheep and Wool. I’m wondering about lace
demonstration in those areas, and have emailed the Maryland Sheep and Wool
people to find out if one would have to pay for demonstrating, since no profit
would be made by the demonstrator, directly or indirectly. It might require
making lace with laceweight yarn, but there are designs for such things.
Great for scarves. I believe the new Jane Atkinson book on contemporary lace
could be useful here. Perhaps you have something similar near you. Remember,
in the US we are starting at an assumed absolute zero in information about
bobbin lace by the general public.

Re: [lace] to Glue or not to glue?

2011-10-24 Thread Bob Ross
Another idea may be to try a Golden acrylic gel called GAC900 or the
silk screen fabric gel. They are specifically formulated to be used
with fabric. They dry with a softer hand than glues usually do. I've
used it in painting on fabric. Here is the Golden Web site on using
their products with fabric

http://www.goldenpaints.com/technicaldata/fabric.php

Has anyone tried this?

And then I heard from a friend that the Chesapeake Region Lace Guild used to

[lace] Vemeer's Lacemaker - again

2011-10-24 Thread Laurie Waters
I've made a change in the Vermeer Lacemaker post on LaceNews. I've split the
post in two, one describes just the current Fitzwilliam exhibition. The
other goes into a new category called 'Fine Art', and contains the rest of
the discussion and reader comments. To continue with this, I also just
posted a piece on Han van Meergeren's forgery of the so called 'lost Vermeer
Lacemaker'.
Tomorrow, continuing in the Vemeer vein, I'll put up a piece on Salvador
Dali's copy of the Lacemaker. It's quite an experience.

[lace-chat] New Dentures

2011-10-24 Thread Malvary Cole
A Pastor goes to the dentist for a set of false teeth. The first Sunday
after he gets his new teeth, he talks for only eight minutes. The second
Sunday, he talks for only ten minutes. The following Sunday, he talks
for 2 hours and 48 minutes.

The congregation had to mob him to get him down from the pulpit and they
asked him what happened.

The Pastor explains the first Sunday his gums hurt so bad he couldn't
talk for more than 8 minutes. The second Sunday his gums hurt too much
to talk for more than 10 minutes. But, the third Sunday, he put his
wife's teeth in by mistake and he couldn't shut up...
