[lace] galloon
Hi Adele Thank you for your answer: 'The Oxford online dictionary defines a galloon as a narrow ornamental strip of fabric, typically a silk braid or piece of lace, used to trim clothing or finish upholstery At dictionary.com I got: a braid or trimming of worsted, silk or rayon tinsel, gold or silver, etc., usually having scalloping along both' fits my need the best, especially when you point out that the 'usually' means that it can have straight edges too. Other replies carry the comment that galloon can be used for trims that are applied to fabric, so they also apply. My thanks also to all of you who took the trouble to answer this tricky question. I knew there would be some of you with the answer. Happy lacemaking Alex - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Re: Heads of Honiton bobbins
Many thanks all who answered! I shall try the sphericle headed ones. I can't wait till I can wind my bobbins and start! Am 27.01.12 23:20, schrieb Manuela Condrau: I used to use Honiton bobbins with flat heads. At the time I noticed no round shaped heads of those bobbins. Which may say more about my perception than the bobbins, or their suppliers... I notice that many suppliers these days carry bobbins with heads in the shape of a sphere. I wonder what is the advantage of a sphere. Does anyone have experience with those? Anyone who can tell me pro and con of flat vs. spherical heads in a Honiton bobbin? - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] apology, just in case
Dear Arachnids, I have just found out that my email provider had 57 emails hiding in a spam folder just since new year, some emails from arachne about lace (as well as your lovely Il Deva version of Mama, David). This might have happened any time since July last year, so if I have seemed to ignore any mail intended for me it wasn't intentional. I have changed the filter now and hope it doesn't happen again. I will keep an eye on it though, in the future, just in case. Now, Proper lace content, I finished off another piece of lace last night and am now trying to decide what design to use for my modesty panel for my new top, as discussed earlier this month. I have since worn the top and took up a previous suggestion, tucking the lace hanky into the front which was a Alex Stillwells design. It worked beautifully in terms of look, but didn't sit still quite enough just tucking it in at the last minute and the top definately needs the extra covering, so lace decoration will work well. Too tired to think straight today:-) Sue T Dorset UK www.hurwitzend.co.uk - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] 2012 OIDFA Congress in Caen
I'm keeping in mind the Feb. 15th registration deadline so was I wondering if anyone else is planning to attend who would like to meet up with me. Sadly I can't afford to attend for the workshops or the Lace Tour but this will be the first time I'm attending an OIDFA Congress I'm looking forward to setting foot in France for the first time in my life. [lace] galoon
Hi Arachnid Thank you to everyone who responded to my question about galoon, which can also be spelt galloon and galon. I knew the term can be used when the edges are not straight but was not sure if it can also be applied if the edges are straight. There have plenty of replies confirming that the edges can be straight, so I will go ahead and use it. Thank you all again for taking the time to respond. [lace] translations
A lovely friend sent me a lace book for my birthday which is in french, so I have been busy translating it, some words have been fine, but a few are not so clear, so would someone remind me please of the place many of you added words in various languages, like half stitch, whole stitch, pin or whatever. I might be able to change one or two to improve my understanding, before I try something. there are several lovely stoles in there and although I would never have he need to wear one, I am tempted to convert them down a bit and make a scarf of one of the patterns. Hmmm, my list grows longer quicker than I make my lace, LOL. I have several French ones, but would be insterested in the stoles you mentioned in your mail. Re: [lace] translations
Hi Sue, In my experience an excellent source of translations is OIDFA's compendium of translations of lace-related words, International Lace Dictionary. I don't see it for sale on their website any more, but one of the lace vendors may still have copies. [lace] Re: Galoon (galloon, galon, with some fulfilling segues)
I think it would either have to be an edging (applied with a different use), or an embellished insertion. Since no picture, it is hard to say how itâs construction could sway the words.  I gathered several links for you:  Book where your use of âgalloonâ fits: http://books.google.com/books?id=t0t6AWUQgTsCpg=PA223lpg=PA223dq=decorati ve+edge+insertionsource=blots=xPMjP1Q31dsig=ccWoDkfPrWZ5CWPgsuispeP_Uschl =ensa=Xei=UFQlT86cCOeciQKmsqWrBwved=0CDQQ6AEwAw#v=onepageq=decorative%20e dge%20insertionf=false  French Heirloom site with terms (not new to most, but viewing it from the sewers side of it): http://www.cynthiahoweminiatures.com/Sewing.htm  A Bernina How to (nothing really new here, but it may be fun to see various applications for laces, done in the French Heirloom style (by machine): http://www.google.com/url?sa=trct=jq=esrc=ssource=webcd=6ved=0CEQQFjAF url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.berninausa.com%2Fwebautor-data%2F598%2Fheirloom-basics. pdfei=UFQlT86cCOeciQKmsqWrBwusg=AFQjCNGv1XNhrSAOs2OqOAcqJm8QJmsmkQsig2=hCq UcP8254f1gCH2nmFXKA  Another from the stitch technique perspective, and shows how stitches can create what you are talking aboutâ¦embellishing the header or footer (again, just interesting overall): http://www.artsanddesigns.com/cgi-bin/makeGlossary.pl?category=embroideryse ction=I  Further digressing, here is a nice little book excerpt with nice pictures of stitches: http://books.google.com/books?id=KgE1OpKIjVwCpg=PA251lpg=PA251dq=decorati ve+edge+insertionsource=blots=gEdGL7EeYDsig=YNCBEGbTfjKZvc-99Hd8BJIpjNIhl =ensa=Xei=UFQlT86cCOeciQKmsqWrBwved=0CCkQ6AEwAQ#v=onepageq=decorative%20e dge%20insertionf=false  As you can tell, I love all aspects of this. I think yet again, you are correct, Alex! The only thing I would suggest for more detailed information, would be Therese Dillmontâs Encyclopedia (on the Arizona site if you donât have it at home), or AntiquePatternLibrary in Yahoo groups, has an amazing and often glorious collection of anything antique. More time than you have, and one must have a drool cloth beneath the chin, but no doubt in one of those old books that are OOP and copyright status, they would/should have reference to your query. The application may or may not be bobbin lace, but for sure needle lace and other media. Be forewarnedâ¦it tends to distract one from bobbin lace and venture into new or forgotten needlework techniques, for those who love creating legacies with their hands. It is a huge work in progress. Some basicâ¦others like you have never or rarely seen before⦠ Best, Susan Reishus www.SusanReishusDesigns.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] galoon
Historically galloon refers to metal thread lace or braid, as used on military uniforms or 18th century laced coats. Here's the Wikipedia definition: Galloon is a decorative woven trim sometimes in the form of a braid and commonly made of metallic gold or silver thread, lace, or embroidery. Galloon is used in the trim of military and police uniforms, ecclesiastical garments, and as trim on textiles, drapery, and upholstered furniture. Modern lace manufacturers seem to be using it more loosely, for any sort of double-edged strip lace, scallopped or straight. Google turned up several of them.
