Re: [lace] Pat Earnshaw Lace - Auction

2012-10-10 Thread lynrbailey
Dear Jeri,
I think many of us like to understand the other aspects of lace other than
'just' making it. Knowing what the antiques are worth is always interesting.
For me, it's seeing what was made, when. And simply seeing examples of various
laces is an education. I always look at the reports of what is for sale on
Ebay, and sometimes copy it to my computer for later study, including the
identification of lace. This particular offering is especially interesting
because it belonged to Pat Earnshaw. I'm sure many of us are interested in
seeing what she thought was worth having. Thanks so much for the information.
I wouldn't have known otherwise, and that would have been a shame.

Lyn in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, where it is a pleasant fall, although the
leaves have not turned. 66F 17C right before supper. Frost on Friday night.

RE: [lace] Pat Earnshaw Lace - Auction

2012-10-10 Thread Annette Meldrum
Dear Jeri and others
I think it is most important and interesting to have this information. As a
lace community these auctions of collections are historically important as
well as of interest even if we are not in a position to bid for items.
I will be examining closely and if not for your announcement would have
missed it.
Thank you for sharing and keeping us informed. We all move in different
circles and together we don't miss much that is happening in the world of
lace. That is why we subscribe.
Please don't stop sharing book reviews and auctions and conservation advice.
We all value it very highly.

Annette in Wollongong, South Coast of NSW, Australia where it is wet and
cold again.

I was in Honiton earlier this year and the Lace Shop is now a Chinese
restaurant. :o( All that's left is the words carved into the stonework of the
building and a plaque on the wall with a very brief history.

[lace] Honiton lace shop

2012-10-10 Thread Julie Ourom
I was in Honiton a year or so back, spent a weekend there.  I thought I wrote
a posting to Arachne, but maybe not.  The lace shop was definitely closed,
very little traces of it.  The museum was open, just winding down for the
season at the time, and well worth a visit.  Lots to buy in the shop!  It's a
lovely little town to spend time wandering around - lots of nice cafes (but
surprisingly little in the way of accommodation), lace and other murals on
exterior walls and very pretty countryside.

[lace] Pat Earnshaw Lace - Auction

2012-10-10 Thread Jeriames
No mention has been made on Arachne of the up-coming Kerry Taylor Auction

Pat Earnshaw Lace and Textile Collection items are shown under Tab 7.
There are other lace items throughout the on-line catalog.

It appears that other items from Earnshaw's collection will be in a
subsequent auction.

Re: [lace] Straw embroidery and lace

2012-10-10 Thread Jeriames
The last item pictured on the site Avital gave us (below) was by Veronica
Main, England.

Perhaps there are some who are more than a little interested, so you might
like to know that Main wrote a excellent book: "Swiss Straw Work -
Techniques of a Fashion Industry", 2003, ISBN 0-9541795-0-1, Main Collins
Publishing (self-pub.), 192 pages, very well illustrated in color, with
detailed
instructions, soft cover.

Chapters on History, Materials, Equipment, Split Straw, Straw Thread, Whole
 Straw, Flattened Straw, etc.

Some of this work is done using needlelace techniques.

If you cannot find the book, contact me personally, and I will share how
to reach the author in England. Without her permission, I will not violate
her privacy on our public site (Arachne) --
which Google picks up!

Security reminder to those who like to jump in with additional
information -- think twice about what you are sharing -- Google captures what
you
write to Arachne.

[lace] Macrame

2012-10-10 Thread Janice Blair
Hi Sue,
Very colorful jewelry and nice work. Some of the earrings looked like
they
would work in bobbin lace. In fact, the spiral ones look similar to the
ones
that Ulrike Voelcker does. Ulrike might be teaching a short jewelry
class next
summer in Salt Lake City but so far, I have no idea on the
patterns.

I realised that I used to like doing macrame way back in the
60/70's, maybe that
is what attracted me to bobbin lace.

I am organising the teachers for the North
Suburban NeedleArts Guild for
this guild year, and one of them (Joan Babcock)
is teaching micro-macramé
and makes fascinating necklaces:

Her work seems more akin to weaving than lace
though

[lace] Fwd: Greek finger lace, etc

Koutsikas is on the "Arizona" site
(http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/lace.html). Marji has taught a
macrame class based on this, as many people know. What she is working on now
is Margaretenspitzen, a fascinating development on Cavendoli. Both of these
can be found on the web and are well worth taking a look at.

2012-10-10 Thread Susan Reishus
Thank you for the stunning inspiration in straw work, Avital
http://www.thestrawshop.com/straw-embroidery.htm

and macrame, Sue!
http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/books/macrame_dmc.pdf

They are coarser work than I tend to prefer, but definitely didn't need coffee
to wake me up after seeing these things!

Thank you again for sharing.

Best,
