Re: [lace] Making lace in public places
Hi Spiders All, One of the first demos I did was in our church, where we had a 'Hobbies Weekend' - with all sorts of crafts and hobbies, including collections of fountain pens and fly making (for fishermen) - and ME! One little girl of about 13 stayed with me most of the two days and, after the Sunday service to end the weekend, her father rang me up to say could she join the class. What do you think I said? She still makes lace, although she works shifts, so can't get to classes, but she had her 21st birthday with the class a couple of years ago - so I *do* class that as a great and successful demonstration. Carol - in North Norfolk UK, where we have had about ten days of snow, but at least it is now thawing, although the slush is freezing at nights, so even more treacherous. Every time we demonstrate I am amazed at how many men seem to be fascinated by it and ask lots of questions and a few even have a go we get lots of children interested and many of them are dragged away by the parents because they need to get going but the children just want to keep on making lace. One little girl last time ended up going home with a second hand pillow and plastic bobbins and a snake pattern because she was so hooked ( hope she keeps it up). We have gained new members of the club as a result of these days at the library. Re: [lace] demo followup
Sorry Jenny and Hazel, it could be me beating the record. I saw bobbin lace making as a child of three or four, sitting on the lap of my aunt. She was paralyzed on the right side of her body and did lace with her left hand with hooded bobbins on a roller pillow. And as you could imagine I forgot about. In 1981 on a travel to Canada I saw it again and got interest in it. But it took me till 1987 to get to a class. Ilske, back from the penguins which weren't interested in bobbin lace making but in brooding the next generation. But in different chats with other passengers, mostly men, I could tell about. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Ok... I'm joining in now Before I started school, like Ilske, I saw lace being made by my aunt. She promised she'd teach me when I started school, unfortunately she passed away before I got there. I'd been fascinated by the beads at the bottom of the bobbins One of the saddest things for me is that I don't have any of her lace not counting the crochet edged table cloth she made for my Mum and I still have!! It was over 50 years later that I found a teacher and started making lace! Sue, like you I am very sad that didn't get anything of the things from my aunt. Our family became destroyed in a way and my aunt passed by when I was in Stuttgart than. But the first little Torchon pattern I designed I named after her Hertha. Ilske - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] been following this string with interest.
I have to jump in herethe first person I ever saw making bobbin lace was me! Since the mid 1930's I knew and was curious about the 'pretty lady making lace on the big pillow'as described by a museum guard. Living close to NYC, one of my playgrounds was the NYC art museum. Finally, in the late 1960's, I learned WHAT she was doing! Thus started a love affair. Any more detail is burdensome. I saw a lace demo in England in 1970 and started making lace in 1994 after finding a lace kit when visiting England. Not quite your 25 years but close. Can't believe it is coming up to 20 years of lace making. Have had a few favorites along the way such as Milanese, now it is Beds Lester laces. Janice Perhaps I hold a record? There was 25 years between seeing a lace demo and my taking it up.
