[lace] Canadian Lacemaker Gazette - Bev Walker

2013-07-13 Thread Jeriames
Years ago, Tess told me about the quarterly Canadian Lacemaker Gazette,
and I subscribed immediately.

Living in a state bordering Quebec and New Brunswick, and with a direct
ferry trip from Maine to Nova Scotia possible, we sometimes have lace guests
from Canada, or visit them. We have a easy relationship with lacemakers
across our northern border.

You often read postings on Arachne from Bev Walker. Bev has been the
Volunteer Editor, for the last 13 years of the Gazette's nearly 30-year
history! That is a long time to keep up momentum. In this period, the
Gazette
has added more and more color. Counting the covers, it has 24 pages of
content.

This is a newsy publication, with photos of lacemakers joining the 5 Metre
Club, reports of various lace getaways (including *Lace Camp*), patterns,
antique lace sharing, lace exhibits, ethnic lace articles, lace day
reports, lace travels, book reviews. Always, a lot of photos and touches of
local
enthusiasm. Articles submitted in French are published in French (not
many of those, but a nice touch).

The Gazette brings lace news down to a very personal level of enjoyment,
and is always a pleasure to read cover-to-cover (and save for my lace
library).

Publishing is moving from British Columbia to Manitoba. Now is a good
time to shout a big "Thank You and Well Done" to Bev Walker and her friends,
and "Greetings" to the new volunteers in Manitoba..

Yes it still takes place every year. When they were first starting Tini and
a friend came to Ottawa and stayed with me. Unfortunately, I've never
managed to get there yet, but I know of others who go regularly. Manitoulin
Island is not near Ottawa - it is several hours drive away.

Re: [lace] Lace headboard

Interesting site! I think that is a photo enlargement of a point de gaze
rose. Wow! There are a couple more lacy ones - one looks like cast iron
painted white and one is a piece of lace, maybe a curtain suspended behind
the bed. A bridal veil would look gorgeous there except I don't think
anyone would want to have the lace exposed all the time. Very
interesting!

Going up one level on the site, there is some contact information (phone,
fax, email) but no signs of activity since posting the highlights of 2001
page, which makes one really suspect it's defunct. Pity.

2013-07-13 Thread Cindy Rusak
Hi All,

I just got back from Lace Camp. It was the 20th anniversary this year and
there were about 52 attendees. It's a great week in a great place.

Cheers,

Interesting but that was in 2001 - 12 years ago. Does anyone on Arachne know
if this camp is still going on ?

My granddaughter in law in Ottawa just sent me information about this.
It is too late to do anything about it this year, but it certainly gives us
ideas for the next.  It also shows that lace gatherings don't have to be held
in luxury hotels, so far beyond the reach of most of us.  Enjoy and dream!
