RE: [lace] seeking Milanese advice
Hi When doing a Milanese braid around a bend you need to do some back stitches to keep the pattern level. I was taught to count out the number of pins the pattern takes and then count the pin holes on each side, putting a pin in each side. Then see if the pattern is still level - if not see how many back stitches needed. Sometimes it is easier count 2 pattern repeats and pining and counting. I have used this many times and it does help. Although I often do it after the pattern is not level. Re: [lace] seeking Milanese advice
I don't claim to be any expert on Milanese, so I am probably not qualified to comment on this, but...I have not had much luck in making a nice looking zig-zag on anything other than a straight line. I would instead try to use my ingenuity in managing my design so that the zig-zag appears in all its glory in straight lines and the curves have more forgiving stitches in them. [lace] Online Interwoven Globe: The Worldwide Textile Trade 1500-1800 exhibition
Hello all- Not sure if someone has already pointed this out, and I know it's not quite the same, but the Met's website has images of all of the items in the exhibit: www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/current-exhibitions. Also a number of links to articles. Devon, any lace items here? Any insider's notes? One of the house museums here has a piece in the exhibit (a palampore--bed covering) and they have arranged a bus trip to NYC with a guided tour. I've decided to splurge for that. Regards, Lorraine in Albany, NY where I hope to finally get to the lace pillow a bit this weekend (I suppose I should say a lace pillow since there are several to choose from!) - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Interwoven Globe: The Worldwide Textile Trade 1500-1800 exhibition
Fellow Spiders- I had a quick walk through of the Interwoven Globe exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art yesterday on my lunch hour. It is nine rooms and I want to go back and do the full audio tour which I anticipate will take several hours, with the need for refreshments and rest at intervals. There are not very many benches in this exhibit, I might add. But, my initial observation is that it is dazzling and probably the textile exhibit that would justify a trip to New York, so you might want to start making travel plans now. The objects are just beautiful and in excellent condition. I didn't read many of the descriptions since I didn't have much time, so I can't comment on them. But the concept, about the international cross-pollination of textiles in the period 1500-1800 is fascinating. There is really no lace, so don't go for that reason. I bought the catalogue ($65, cloth bound!) and it is very beautiful with color pictures of the objects and also many other objects not in the exhibit which provide context. It is not merely a picture book, as there is a lot of text that I am sure further expands the wall descriptions. I for one, would like Jeri to review the catalogue since it is obviously not a quick read, and I am not sure when I am going to have time to digest it. I have ordered the catalog from Amazon for $39. I have Prime, so I get free shipping, but shipping may be free otherwise as well. The link to email Janet for the Christmas Card exchange 2013 did not appear correctly in the email I received - it ran Sallie's name into the end of it without a space, and when I clicked on it to put my name down, the email bounced back. [lace] advice for Milanese braids on a curve?
Hello All! Many thanks to Anna, Corinne Devon for lending a hand. This has turned out to be quite a project--even more so when I can picture the effect that I want to achieve but it doesn't work out on my pillow! My first bookworm must have been dumb luck because the buds braids worked. The second bookworm remains uncooperative so it's back to the drawing board. A giant hint is to be found in the curvy beginner patterns in the Lace Guild UK booklet where meander-in-braid 2 ovals are used. For others, it looks like braid samples are in my future--to find out whether a braid works on a curve to better understand pin spacing. Sounds like a winter project another workshop! We had a nice turnout for our lace gathering in Howland, OH today. Needlelace, tatting bobbin lace were under construction--plus three prospective members attended. It was a good day despite the monsoons! Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Erie, PA USA - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Thread Question
Hi All, I am attempting to get my 6 1/2 yr old granddaughter interested in making lace. Have gone to Lace Express 3/2001 and 2/2000 for Michelle Pitts animal designs. Question - what would be equivalent to Cotty No 50? I thought I could try DMC 80 or perhaps Gutterman 100/3 silk. Could always go back to the oldfashioned concept of doing a tension piece!
