Hello Heather and everyone

In Brenda's thread book, the not-spun silk is called reeled. Gutermann
100/3 is 27 wraps, there are Pipers silk equivalents, and a few other
brands; look to either side of the 27 wraps, the columns for 26 and 28 for
near-equivalents.

Hope this helps, hope also that you have Brenda's useful book ;)

2015-01-28 Thread Clay Blackwell
This is a topic that has come up periodically on the list, and I have found
that my own viewpoint changes from time to time!

A number of years ago, I was inclined to be frugal with the amount I put on
bobbins, and when a project was done, the small amount of thread left was
discarded. However, my projects tend to be more similar these days, and if I
load up the bobbins, they can be used for several projects before tossing the
bitter ends!

I do put the loaded bobbins in bags with the thread size, (and color, because
white and ecru are not the same!) clearly noted on a piece of paper... I also
put how many bobbins are in the bag!

Thank you so very much ladies! I do have Brenda's delightful and

My how it's grown!

I've only heard wonderful things about Piper's silks, and I've a line

hopefully will keep an eye out for a stash of it at the vendors there!

I'm still fond of it. :)

I'm making lace with that at the moment and it's lovely thread to work with
 - much softer and more adaptable than the Guterman spun silks, it will
spread out to fill a bigger space or squash up to fit a smaller one.
Might be quite a slow process getting hold of some in Canada though -
Pipers' is a one-woman business and the silk is hand-reeled to order, so
there's usually a wait even without international post to contend with.

Leftovers.

The lacework now is finished,
The piece is on display.
But now the bobbins in the box
Have thread too good to throw away.

It seems a crime to throw it out
Could it make another mat?
But no, I know I'd then run short
There's not enough for that.

So then I got to thinking
I guess I'm no spring chicken
My time to lace is precious now
So use it while I'm still kicking!

So thread gets stripped and thrown away
It gets chucked in the bin
And I can wind with conscience clear
And make lace with a grin.

We saw footage of the snow on TV last night. Looks cold!! :) We are

Hope you are OK Devon, as I think you live in that area.

[lace] Ecclesiastical Embroidery Exhibition at Ely Cathedral

2015-01-28 Thread Louise Bailey
Dear Arachnes,

A (almost) Lenten treat: For those of you in or reasonably close to East
Anglia, Ely Cathedral is hosting a RSN Exhibition during February...

04 Feb 2015 - 28 Feb 2015
Ely Cathedral will be hosting a unique exhibition of Ecclesiastical Embroidery
in partnership with the Royal School of Needlework.
Over 60 displays will include significant pieces of needlework which have been
worked on by the Royal School and which form part of their collection housed
at Hampton Court Palace.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is six of the twelve Litany of Loreto
panels. They were bequeathed to the School by a convent in Sussex and are
rarely on display to the public. Other pieces include depictions of
theological figures and symbols using a wide range of threads and techniques,
plus some rare examples of white work altar cloths, burses, stoles and
chalices.
This unique exhibition will include artefacts from Ely Cathedral's own
collection including a Mediaeval Cope, an 18th century gold vestment set and
the recently restored white altar frontal.
As part of the event we are delighted to have on display the 11th century
gilded bronze chasuble pin, originally from the tomb of Archbishop Wulfstan at
Ely, and gifted to the Society of Antiquaries of
Londonhttp://www.sal.org.uk/ in 1771.

According to our local paper, it is rare for the RSN to exhibit outside its
home at Hampton Court.

There will also be a couple of lectures and workshops, more details are on the
Cathedral website, tickets which include the Cathedral entry price are £8.

I make a piece of cardboard with small slits in the side. The size depends
on how much thread there is.
Then I wind the thread onto the cardboard, usually about 6 strands at a time
and put the ends in the slits. Keep the the cardboard in a bag with the

different terms, so I turn to the ever wise and eternally helpful
Arachnes.

I am looking for recommendations for a filiment silk thread (not spun
silk, I'm hoping to compare the two!) that is approximately the same
size as Gutterman silk 100/3 (28 wraps / cm)

I am struggling mightily with all the different terms around silk
threads (floss silk? Twisted seems promsing. Unboiled?)

Thank you for your help, my lace endeavours would have sunk months ago
if not for you all.

[lace] Nottingham's Bucks Point book

2015-01-28 Thread Nancy Neff
Since the list has been so quiet, maybe I can bother you all with a question,
the answer to which I should know but I've lost my notes.
Which is the really good version of Pamela Nottingham's Bucks Point book?
I've been told there are two editions, or maybe two versions more different
than just editions, and one is much better than the other.  I have
one copyright 1981, called The Technique of Bucks Point Lace.  Is that the
better of the two?  If not, what is the date and title of the other one?
Thanks all.NancyConnecticut, where I am in the NE corner, got over 2 feet of
snow, and am not yet completely dug out. :-(  I'm inside giving my back a
break.

Re: [lace] silk threads

2015-01-28 Thread Beth Marshall
Pipers' 90/2 Twisted Gloss Silk is a filament thread, and Brenda P
recently measured it at 30w/cm (it's not in the existing edition of
Threads for lace but should be in edition 6 when that comes out)
I'm making lace with that at the moment and it's lovely thread to work
with - much softer and more adaptable than the Guterman spun silks, it
will spread out to fill a bigger space or squash up to fit a smaller one.
Might be quite a slow process getting hold of some in Canada though -
Pipers' is a one-woman business and the silk is hand-reeled to order, so
there's usually a wait even without international post to contend with.
