Re: [lace] silk threads
Hello Heather and everyone In Brenda's thread book, the not-spun silk is called reeled. Gutermann 100/3 is 27 wraps, there are Pipers silk equivalents, and a few other brands; look to either side of the 27 wraps, the columns for 26 and 28 for near-equivalents. Hope this helps, hope also that you have Brenda's useful book ;) On Wed, Jan 28, 2015 at 8:37 AM, Jazmin jazmin...@gmail.com wrote: ... Re: [lace] Thread management/organisation
This is a topic that has come up periodically on the list, and I have found that my own viewpoint changes from time to time! A number of years ago, I was inclined to be frugal with the amount I put on bobbins, and when a project was done, the small amount of thread left was discarded. However, my projects tend to be more similar these days, and if I load up the bobbins, they can be used for several projects before tossing the bitter ends! I do put the loaded bobbins in bags with the thread size, (and color, because white and ecru are not the same!) clearly noted on a piece of paper... I also put how many bobbins are in the bag! Thank you so very much ladies! I do have Brenda's delightful and invaluable book, I have since she mentioned it here as a 1st edition. My how it's grown! My, two digests in one day!! I used to save all my thread ends for a friend who used them to stuff little hearts she made that were given to a local hospital through her church organization. [lace] Ecclesiastical Embroidery Exhibition at Ely Cathedral
Dear Arachnes, A (almost) Lenten treat: For those of you in or reasonably close to East Anglia, Ely Cathedral is hosting a RSN Exhibition during February... 04 Feb 2015 - 28 Feb 2015 Ely Cathedral will be hosting a unique exhibition of Ecclesiastical Embroidery in partnership with the Royal School of Needlework. Over 60 displays will include significant pieces of needlework which have been worked on by the Royal School and which form part of their collection housed at Hampton Court Palace. One of the highlights of the exhibition is six of the twelve Litany of Loreto panels. They were bequeathed to the School by a convent in Sussex and are rarely on display to the public. Other pieces include depictions of theological figures and symbols using a wide range of threads and techniques, plus some rare examples of white work altar cloths, burses, stoles and chalices. This unique exhibition will include artefacts from Ely Cathedral's own collection including a Mediaeval Cope, an 18th century gold vestment set and the recently restored white altar frontal. As part of the event we are delighted to have on display the 11th century gilded bronze chasuble pin, originally from the tomb of Archbishop Wulfstan at Ely, and gifted to the Society of Antiquaries of Londonhttp://www.sal.org.uk/ in 1771. According to our local paper, it is rare for the RSN to exhibit outside its home at Hampton Court. http://www.ely-news.co.uk/Honour-Ely-Cathedral-chosen-Royal-School/story-2586 3951-detail/story.html There will also be a couple of lectures and workshops, more details are on the Cathedral website, tickets which include the Cathedral entry price are £8. http://www.elycathedral.org/events/ecclesiastical-embroidery-exhibition Louise In currently sunny but windy Cambridge (just SW of Ely), having had hail, thunder, the works, this afternoon. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Thread management/organisation
I usually have a number of small projects or things I want to 'try out'. I use my left over thread to make lengths of simple lace or experiment with a new lace or produce samples for teaching purposes. The lengths of lace or experiments get sewn onto hand towels. If the lace is stitched all around, then you can throw the whole thing into the washing machine. I make a piece of cardboard with small slits in the side. The size depends on how much thread there is. Then I wind the thread onto the cardboard, usually about 6 strands at a time and put the ends in the slits. Keep the the cardboard in a bag with the original reel. You can write what the thread is on the cardboard.
