Re: [lace] Lace in India
I'm not sure if it still happens, in the mid 1970's the Indian government were trying to support rural industries by selling their wares in government sponsored shops in touristy areas of India, such as Delhi and what was Bombay. I bought a number of items in these stores, dresses embroidered with mirrors and a nightie and dressing gown hand embroidered with handmade bobbin lace trims. I still have many of the items I bought since they were very good quality and reasonably cheap for what they were. So 40 years ago bobbin lace was being made commercially even if on a small scale. [lace] lacing alone or in group
When doing a simple lace project, I don't mind company and chat . So on Th evenings when 3 of us gather at my home, I do the easy bits. One makes Honiton lace, I am doing either Beds or Bucks point, and no. 3 does tatting. I keep my intricate work for me-time, when I can just disappear in my craft room with no disturbances - apart from Mike shouting that coffee is ready, or Tilly (the dog) banging on the door with a ball as she wants to play. Later this month I am going on a Lace Guild course, and want to try my hand at Floral Bucks, and have a fan pattern. I will take some smaller patterns with me, in case the fan is too much of a challenge. Re: [lace] Lace in India
Dear Alison, There is a long history of nuns making bobbin lace in Asia. They went there as missionaries from European nations. I have a Mechlin lace-trimmed handkerchief beautifully handmade in the early 20th C. that was probably made in Asia. It is a very convincing copy of an 18th Century lace, shown on page 162 of Lady Emily Reigate's Illustrated Guide to Lace - border of basket of flowers alternating with huntsman and reindeer. After considerable study, several experts concluded that this copy could have been made in Asia. There are many clues as to the possibility of nuns teaching the finer points of lace making in Asia, but it is generally not documented very well and would have been very controversial in Europe in the period when handmade bobbin lace was "going out of business". The wealthy had connections with lace dealers, and could have handmade laces made wherever they could be completed at the least expense. My handkerchief is too small in size to be an 18th C. "flirting device" (clue 1). It has an Art Deco-style monogram on the linen (clue 2). The lace is made to turn corners, whereas the original lace would have been gathered at the corners (clue 3). The lace is sewn on by a sewing machine (clue 4). Etc. This has been studied in a museum using the best possible magnification and photographic equipment, and it has been compared to the original 18th C. lace. Most collectors would have discarded the handkerchief, but I felt young inexperienced scholars of the future can learn a lot from examples like it. It was offered as a gift to the museum - for study purposes. After over a year with no action, I asked that it be returned. Museums tend to be short-sighted, to the detriment of future research. Early in Arachne's history, we had a lacemaker from India who had a Master's Degree from a London university. Her children were in university. She was employed by one of India's largest corporations. She made lace as a hobby. So, technically, handmade lace is made in India. If it is "manufactured", it is probably made by machine now, with perhaps a few exceptions (the same as everywhere in the world). From time-to-time we do read about Asian lacemakers - in our Guild magazines. Japanese and Korean lacemakers attend OIDFA Congresses, and there is a good exchange of information and teachers in place. You have to consider the "economic" impact on womens' activities of this kind in some nations. Your question was brief, but there is much to consider. Is this helpful information? Re: [lace] Solo or group lacing
I think I am lucky. My lace group, in which we normally not make lace, is making lace together in the summer once a month in a café in the Vondelpark. There we can sit inside or outside on the terrace and make lace together. Of course I have also my students who make lace in my house. Sometimes I have also the opportunity to make lace also. For the lace café in the park I mostly take a small pillow with a simple pattern on it. At home and when I am alone making lace, I make then a more complex pattern, whatever is on the pillow. For me both ways of making lace are very enjoyable. Re: [lace] Lace in India
I didn’t see the show and I don’t know about the nuns, but just a few years ago I remember having a discussion here on Arachne about hand-made lace still being commercially made. There was some report - either on TV or in print, I’m not sure - that mentioned two places: India, and China. I remember that the girls in India would get about $1 per day for making lace. I think the Chinese girls got less; I may have this wrong. Adele West Vancouver, BC (west coast of Canada) > Hi > > Did anyone else in the UK see Sunday night's episode of the Good Kama > Hospital? Took me about 15 minutes to trim the last digest. Have to find a better way. As far as finding a lace group, sometimes you have to make one! Doing your Bobbin Lace in public will help! You may attract some followers and hopefully someone who wants to learn. Then you will have a lace buddy. One local friend saw me tatting at a cultural event and wanted further instruction on bobbin lace that she had learned in Europe at a cousin's house. My othere lace buddy and I live an hour apart. In good weather she comes to my house or I go to her house. My lace group is an hour away in good weather and good traffic . Once a month we meet in Mpls. So good luck to you in the south in forming your own lace group. It may seem like hard work, but very rewarding! [lace] China in April
Dear Friends, In April I shall be doing a 12 day tour of China performing with Melbourne's Heidelberg Choral Society. Only 4 of those nights are performances do there's a fair bit of free time. I was just wondering whether anyone knew any special lace venues in Shanghai; Beijing; or Xi-An? After the concerts are over I shall be spending 10 days in Saigon and 19 days in Hoi An to enjoy the food, relax, lose weight and perhaps bring home some more silk thread :) Thanks David in Ballarat, AUS - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Lace in India
Hi Did anyone else in the UK see Sunday night's episode of the Good Kama Hospital? For those not in the UK this is a hospital drama set in in India. The opening shots showed nuns making bobbin lace to be made into wedding dresses. Is this accurate, is lace still being made for sale in India today? I remember reading Black Narcissus by Rumer Godden [it was later made into a film].That was set in India and I think that nuns were portrayed lacemaking. Bu ihat was in the 1930s or 40s. [lace] Solo or group lacing
I enjoy making lace in a group because it's fun to chat with my friends. However, I need an easy project for this, one that I've done enough of to do without having to think very hard. Anything that takes concentration is done at home, alone. Also, getting a project started, or one done on a very heavy pillow, is also a home project. Thus, i usually have several projects in process at a time -- and two or three on small travel pillows so I can choose the project that suits the occasion. I also take travel pillows to church meetings or places where I'll have to sit for a length of time, like getting my car serviced. I can listen to music, TV or an audiobook story while working complicated lace, but conversation takes more attention. In my working days, I only had evenings to make lace. I still seem to follow that pattern -- do chores etc in the daytime, and my special projects in the evening when the TV is on. Also, my fingers are a bit stiff in the mornings, so it's easier for them to make lace later in the day. The exception is for two months of the year during tax season when I work as a receptionist -- and have to take something to work on between clients. I am working on my most difficult project at work -- Miss Channer's Mat. My friends are envious that I get paid while making lace. Alice in Oregon -- where I woke up to snow again, but it didn't stay long. We've had 4 times the usual snow this year. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
