RE: [lace] Testing whether Italics will process on Arachne's Old Server

2017-06-08 Thread J-D Hammett
The ü and é came through fine on my Windows 10. I hope mine do as well. I will
also try for å and ø using a program called Character Map. This is somewhat
cumbersome to use, but at least it gets accents etc. In the right shape.

Now for lace:- Does anyone know of a lace pattern of an Bluebell?

The u and e look fine at my end, but I’m also using Mail on a Mac. Bev has
straightened me out about the character viewer; for anybody else who has a Mac
and didn’t know it was there, it’s under Edit in Mail (and in the Finder, too)
but it isn’t called Character Viewer - it’s called “Emojis and Symbols” There
are hundreds of them, and I had to scroll down quite a ways to find the little
heart. I was searching for it using the alternate characters on the keyboard
(hold down Option or Shift+Option while typing the keyboard characters), which
is mostly alphabetic things like vowels with accents, plus financial symbols
like the euro sign and the pound sign.

Just to add my 2 cents worth--this is a great mini-pattern! Our guild
successfully used it to teach bobbin lace to Girl Scouts. As suggested on the
IOLI cd last year, we left the tails long, added beads & glued them to hair
clips. Each Girl Scout left with a finished piece that she could wear. One of
the Scouts modeled her hair clips & the photo is posted to Lacers of the Lake -
LOL on FaceBook. This is a terrific resource to share lace with the public.
Thanks Alex! Sincerely, Susan Hottle USA

On your Mac, if you go to the system preferences and choose “Keyboard”,
you can check the box that says “show keyboard and emoji viewers in menu
bar”. This puts a little icon in the menu bar that allows you to pull up the
two viewers from the desktop… the Emoji viewer is the same one you get from
the Mail program, but they Keyboard viewer gives you a diagram of the keyboard
layout. If you then press things like the “command”, “shift”, or
“option” keys with the keyboard viewer open it will show you what symbols
you have available.

A way to indicate them in plain text is as follows:
An asterisk at either end of text is *italics*.
Two asterisks at either end, **bold**
An underscore at either end, _underline_

Some online chat-rooms will convert the * ** and _ to the real thing.

[lace] characters

2017-06-08 Thread Alex Stillwell
Hi Jeri

The exercise on the characters was interesting and my experience was the same
as the other UK results. The comment about Arachne being trusted and used by
many who do not trust facebook etc. applies to me as well, and as the comment
has been made I am obviously not the only one. Perhaps those members who are
comfortable with using all the other sites would remember that some of us do
not have the confidence in using them and will only be reading what they post
on Arachne.

I am more than happy with Arachne and my thanks to all those who are keeping
it going and who have have kept it going in the past. It is a wonderful and
reliable resource.

Hello again Jeri and everyone

First, ditto Shirley T. ! The arachne list is an ongoing delight.

Jeri, your underline, bold and italic won't be seen in any country. It
isn't the server, it is the software.
Our set-up permits punctuation but not formatting such as bold, italic and
underlining.

A way to indicate them in plain text is as follows:
An asterisk at either end of text is *italics*.

2017-06-08 Thread Karen Thompson
Thank you so much for your support of my Ipswich Lace sampler book. It is
very gratifying to hear that my efforts are appreciated. A special thank
you to Jeri for your positive review and good advice on The Lace Samples
from Ipswich, MA, 1789-1790.
Please let me know of any mistakes you find that need to be addressed in a
possible future revised edition. On first read-through of the printed
version I found that p.10, line 4, (fig.3) should be (fig.2).

Those of you coming to the IOLI Convention in July can pre-order the book
from me (privately) before July 1 with a $2 discount ($22), with payment
and pick-up at Convention. The book will also be available through Holly
Van Sciver and Maria Provencher, as well as Amazon. Canadian friends: I
have been informed that the book will be listed on Amazon-ca after June 25.

Looking forward to seeing more Ipswich lace embellishing clothing and being
made, displayed, and demonstrated. I find it to be a fun and challenging
lace. Warning to those of you wanting to make corners. Only a few of the
patterns are on 45 or 60 degree grid. In order to get the motifs as close
to the original as possible, I used different angles for the grid in most
of the reproductions (Thanks to the Lace8 program). Besides, corners in
lace were not common in 1790 in this type of lace. Straight borders were
gathered or folded for corners.

Happy lacing
