Re: [lace] Help! Never done a hanky before
Hi Kathryn I think it all depends on how you have stitch it on, if you have used the four sided stitch it is quite safe to cut right up to the stitches as it is so secure I have even used tweezers to pull a few more threads out so no material is showing on the lace side at all Sue Harvey Norfolk UK Sent from my iPad > - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] commemorative poppies for the Australian War Memorial in Canberra
I have just been told about this project to create commemorative poppies, and thought Iâd post it in case anyone wants to participate: https://5000poppies.wordpress.com/ Hereâs a quick intro from the website: we are in the throes of planning our final installation at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra in 2018. While I canât give you details of the installation ⦠I can tell you that it will be a spectacularly fitting tribute to those who served and sacrificed, their families, their communities and in a way, the whole nation ⦠I canât tell you how excited we are! This wonderful community led, community driven project has been a testament to the depth of feeling we have for our ANZACS ⦠and Marg and I cannot thank you enough for your continued support of our efforts. Itâs been quite a journey and we are justifiably proud of what we have all achieved as an incredible team. So we will have one last huge push ⦠to create approx 62,000 poppies on stems in honour of the fallen in WWI to be planted in Canberra on Remembrance Day 2018. It will take a huge community effort to pull it together ⦠but first the poppies ⦠Patterns for knitted, crocheted, felted, machine-embroidered and felted poppies are at: https://5000poppies.wordpress.com/poppy-patterns/ I am thinking of participating as my paternal grandmotherâs two brothers had emigrated to Australia just before WWI, and so fought with the Australian troops. Even the enlarged image is too blurry for me to be able to make out details. I wonder if the the hole in the bead is meant to be large enough to thread both plaited pairs through it? As to the hanging beads, I would guess you could start and finish the flower at the point from which they hang, and then use the finishing threads from the bobbins to dangle the beads off. Saves darning in those threads! Have you tried emailing the supplier and asking your questions? Re: [lace] instructions
I also think the way people learn to make lace is an issue. I learned in England and was given a pricking and taught to look at the original lace / photo of lace and see what stitches were worked at each pinhole, and also taught how to start and finish in various ways. Written instructions and working diagrams were not provided. Since moving to America, I have discovered that generally people here are not taught this way and expect complete working diagrams and detailed instructions for each piece, which facilitates working at home, but tends to make cause dependence on these instructions and does not readily enable one to carry the ideas from one piece of lace forward to another piece of lace. This then means that it is much harder to share one's own patterns with other people readily, as it is much easier to produce a pricking than a working diagram Sue suebabbs...@gmail.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] bowing off
I was taught bowing off when learning Honiton for just that reason The saving of thread by it being already knotted and just wind back thread to the required length, very useful when making Honiton when you have small pieces to work at a time. Have never used it on any other type of lace but could be used for all small items I think. The technique seems impossible at first but once you get the knack it's fine, I found it easier to use loose blunt scissors, a good description of bowing off can be found in " Honiton Lace A Practical Guide " by Cynthia Voysey a very useful little inexpensive book that I used to learn Honiton I hope it's still available as I've had mine for some years. Re: [lace] bowing off
Lorelei, It's an easy technique to learn and useful if you are cutting off pairs and want them ready knotted to wind a little back and use in another part of the project. Gil, I have never been taught it in relation to any other lace where it might be useful e.g. tape laces, Milanese etc. I have not take any Withof classes so can't comment on that. [lace] Great Lacemakers
Hi All It is with sadness that I am writing to say that another Great Lacemaker has gone to join her thousands of friends in that great Lacemakers Forum in the sky. Sheila Brown from Essex passed away on Friday morning. I got a call from her daughter a short while ago and volunteered to let people on Arachne know. I know that many of you met her on here as well as in person, and will no doubt share your rememberances of her. I can remember doing the proverbial 'open mouth, insert both feet' I was a new lacemaker at the time (some 10 or so years ago), and was put in touch with Sheila via email regarding some lacemaking equipment and books she was selling for another lacemaker that had 'joined the Great Forum'. During the course of the email conversation I suggested she try lacemaking... sent the email and went to look up some of the books on SMP Lace site. The first thing to come up were... books written by Sheila! I then found her phone number and called! Her reply? 'Oh well, Sheila Brown is a common name isn't it?' A week or so later Agnes & I drove to Essex and had lunch with Sheila and Alan, and returned home with a boot full of lace equipment, books, beads and bobbins! It was the start of a great friendship. We have driven to Walsall, and a number of other places to meet up, look at lace and chat! I was also privileged to be able to attend Alan's funeral, which although it was a sad occasion, gave a number of us the opportunity of sitting and discussing 'all things lace' at the do afterwards! The last time I saw her was a couple of years ago in Solihull at the Christmas Fair. She crept up behind me and made me jump!! Much to her delight of course! I've done Christmas Exchanges with her, and am probably among the last people to receive something from this wonderful and 'missed already' lady, having got her name among the Christmas Exchange in 2016. If anyone wishes to send their condolences I do have her daughters address, and will pass it on privately if you email off list. [lace-chat] Great Lacemakers
If you wish to send by email, please email me privately, and I'lll print them out and pass them onto the family on your behalf. Re: [lace] Anne of Green Gables
Hi All This is what Margot had to say: The place to find out about current lacemaking in Canada is: https://lacegazette.com Lacemaking in Maritime Canada started in the 1600s, when that part of Canada was a French colony. We know for sure that the nuns taught Torchon lace at Fortress Louisbourg, on Cape Breton Island. (Geography lesson: The Maritimes are the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island in Eastern Canada. Cape Breton Island is part of NS and next door to PEI.) Not much is known about lacemaking after those 3 provinces became British colonies in the 1700s. However, after visiting many museums, small and large, in The Maritimes, I can say that Ive seen lots of tatting and crocheted lace, but no bobbin lace. Lace on clothing from the late 1800s and early 1900s that Ive seen displayed has, without exception, been machine made lace. And because this was, and is, the poor part of Canada, the machine lace has usually been of poor quality. There is a small group of lacemakers in PEI who might have some information. They can be reached through the Canadian Lacemaker Gazette. Hope it helps. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] 150-year old wedding dress
The thing about this story is that the dress was made by a few times gt grandmother for her wedding. It's been worn by many brides since then and was given to the bride by her grandmother for the big day. The dry cleaners had a 'By Royal Appointment', and so were deemed to be a good dry cleaners. However they went bankrupt and all 'assets' were seized... including all the clothing in the place! When they found out they tried to get the dress back only to be told it couldn't be found! Other brides were/are in similar situations. This is why they appealed to social media. Let's hope they are reunited with the dress soon. It was taken away by the sequestrators, and it's hoped it will be reunited with its owners permanently next week. [lace] Color Theory and Thread Conservation
Again from Jeri. Someone, please share this from another ISP, since we've been told AOL and Comcast do not play well together! 1. Color theory taught by embroidery and photography experts includes an explanation of what happens when a black and white photo is made of something that relies on color for impact. Colors of the same value will not show details that may be important to a design. This effect is apparent if you just put red and green of the same value next to each other (as Joy mentions), walk across the room, and squint at them. An understanding of this is of importance to anyone who is making colored lace. If your lace work is going to be photographed, you should understand colors, and visually test them side-by-side before you even begin a project. Americans who belong to IOLI can better understand this by propping up the newest bulletin (Fall 2016, Vol. 37, Number 1), with Janet Blair's lace peacock, and stepping back to view it. She has used 3 blues for the body, and used one of those blues as spots on the green tail. You can see how important the yellow outlining blue spots is. Imagine if this lovely lace was meant to be photographed in black and white! 2. Conservation warning to anyone who is using a spool of thread as a make-shift pin cushion. A long time ago, I wrote to Arachne about sticking needles in a spool of thread, in response to a magazine photograph many lacemakers might have seen. This damages thread throughout a spool or cone enough that thread may break or be weakened throughout layers wherever it has been pierced. This is a habit that can get away from you - perhaps putting needles or pins in thread that will be used at some future time to make lace or sew a seam. The weak spots will be the first to "self destruct", and none of us like to repair lace or re-sew seams. (You may use this cautionary tip in your guild newsletters.) Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center - In a message dated 1/11/2017 6:31:52 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, joybee...@comcast.net writes: ...Even on a green curtain, red isn't as conspicuous a color as people thinkone has to know it's there to see it at all, and then it's only a vague smudge. [lace] Requested by Jeri
I am responding to this request from Jeri Please, someone, share this memo from another ISP Please make sure you capture The Lace Guild's face page in a permanent place - to remember Jean and David (tuck a paper copy in one of Jean's books, for example). If the face page changes, and Jean gives permission, I will tell you about the black lace tie that is displayed at the top of it. This announcement is a surprise. Jean and David Leader have been a valuable devoted-to-lace team for decades. The amount of volunteer work they do for us is nearly impossible to imagine. Rarely do lace makers have such a vast variety of lace knowledge - and ability to communicate - emanating from one couple. Leader is a most appropriate description of them, as well as being their surname! Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center - In a message dated 1/7/2017 5:51:38 P.M. Re: [lace] Christmas Lace Star finished
Yes, I wanted to make the wise men have richer looking clothes - hence the purple, and gold in them. The Virgin Mary is often depicted with blue and rose garments - sometimes white, but I was trying also to get a balanced effect in the piece. I also used some slubby silk threads in the meadows and these were brighter greens than the thread used in the original, so I had to change the other greens. I used some fluffy threads for the sheep (which didn't work as well as I'd hoped - probably too many pairs in them, but the sheep were worked early on when I was still getting a feel for the number of pairs to use to fill each space) Sue suebabbs...@gmail.com http://babbsandbaobabs.blogspot.com/ - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. I finally started it in September and didnât manage to get it finished before western Christmas (12/25) but have finished it before Orthodox Christmas ! I still have to mount it in its frame, but Iâve posted some photos of it on the pillow on Flickr. The pattern is by Renate Richter, and was apparently published in the German ANNA magazine No. 11/2008, and is now available from http://www.kloeppelstube-zwoenitz.de/schweif-mit-christigeburt.html I varied the colours from the original as I had the whole range of Moravia linen in the house already, and added in some Moravia gold thread too! Re: [lace] Arachne Flickr page
Welcome, Joseph. I donât think we have many rules â being polite and courteous is probably the main one (and you are that!) and there are some restrictions on advertising sales of items if one owns a lacemaking business. Also it is important to trim the emails as some people receive the messages in digest form and untrimmed messages take up a lot of that space. I am surprised that you have to change to plain text only as I can post HTML messages without a problem. I tried to upload some photos the other day for someone else and discovered this problem. I wrote to Clay asking her to change the Flickr account password, as she is the person that pays for the site for all of our use. I am guessing she is busy with family and will be back in touch once the holiday season is over. Re: [lace] Re Lace Facebook
How puzzling and frustrating! The photos are still there on FB, but I don't really understand how Facebook works! I've added some photos to our Flickr site, now it seems clear that the Lace Guild doesn't plan to include such photos in their magazine as they didn't have enough space for them, or on their site, as this would prevent them from selling the CDs of the exhibit. Re: [lace] Re: Lace Facebook
Thanks, Janice, and well done for patiently working thro the Facebook pages. No, no babies in the family yet. It was part of a challenge with Bobbi Donnelly and Michael Guisiana to produce a Christening Outfit using the same dress pattern. Bobbi, of course, did Tønder lace and I believe Michael was going to do Binche lace, so I ended up with Torchon for contrast with the others. The ribbon can be removed and replaced with blue if a boy turns up and the parents will let him wear a dress! A lot of the lace for the shawl was made while demonstrating lacemaking and people always ask how long it too to make, so I have taken to keeping records of most pieces that I do - and usually work to the nearest 5 minutes. Re: [lace] Exchange update/Lace magazine
Thanks for the mention, Janice. Yes, I was awarded a Medal of Excellence for the Christening ensemble (dress, blanket and bonnet) which I had made. I am still waiting for it to be sent to me, along with the CD/DVD of the exhibits. When I enquired yesterday I was told by Michelle that the Guild has still not overcome the technical issues (which I assume is with the CD not the Medal production) and so I don't think Jane Partridge can be right about the stack of CDs being sent out. I was sad not to be able to be in England in the short time that the exhibit was up and looked forward to seeing the CD, but I have rather lost interest in the competition now that it has been shut for two months and the lace has been safely returned to me. I would also have liked to see some photos showing the exhibit as a whole, as well as all the entries. I've also not yet received Lace so haven't yet even seen the winners, and have no clue how many entries there were etc Back on August 4th, the Lace Guild invited winners to post their own photo on FaceBook, which I did, but it doesn't seem that anyone else did, so anyone wanting to see my entry can look at that date on https://www.facebook.com/thelaceguild I think the CD/DVD of entries replaced the booklet that used to be sold, but it seems a shame, now that it is so easy to put photos up on the internet, not to show the lace to a wider than those who went to the exhibit : ( Sue suebabbs...@gmail.com http://babbsandbaobabs.blogspot.com/ - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Hi, New Member here.
Welcome, Joseph. We are a very varied group of lacemakers - in many different countries around the world - some of us have been making lace for many years and others are quite new to the craft. Some make bobbin lace, others needle lace or tatting or knitted or crocheted lace, and so on. You might want to look at the photos on our Flickr site to see the diversity of the lace we make too!
