Hello Alex and All, I hope I'm correctly understanding your question, my English is not so good. I think you're asking how we call the lace made with the technique of lying a thread in a square, oval or whatever else shape and then working inside that shape a design with various stitches . If it's so, we call it pizzo ad ago, merletto ad ago , punto in aria (needlelace). the Venetian lace is made in this way, there is no difference in the name between a geometric and a more free design. This is the punto in aria. We call pizzo ad ago ( needlelace) the Puncetto, too, which is made without lying threads on a surface to anchor the design. Reticello, I've read is a term used for the first time in 1393 , it's a cut work. It evolved from punto tagliato . The first cut works were made cutting and pulling only the horizontal threads; this technique was ( and still is) called sfilature. Only later the vertical threads were cut and the designs became more florals and rich, thanks to the artists who created designs for lace. So, here is a moment in which trimming was made with bobbins instead of on looms. Note, again, it was gold (metal) bobbin lace. Hi Tamara and All, as far as I know , today the word bindella (pl. bindelle) , among other non textile related meanings, indicates both the narrow tape of cotton fabric used to make the tailor's rule and the rule itself. It is woven , not cut from a larger piece of fabric so as the edges are smooth. Then it is waxed or plastified. Usually, people call it metro da sarto, which is tailor's rule , dressmaker's rule or call it metro a nastro which is tape rule. But I think Bindelle in the Le Pompe book is referred to bobbin lace tapes. Bindelle and Cordelle were two kinds of passamenterie used to embellish clothes and home decor. Hello All, following the thread about origin/history of bobbin and needle lace I think it could be interesting to mention a quote of bobbin lace in 1476. In the book Isabella , Beatrice e Alfonso d' Este written by Luigi Gandini ( not sure about the date of publication, I believe is around the end of 19th century) there is a quote from an inventory of 1476 when Eleonora D' Aragona , duchess of Ferrara, ordered to some of her dames to make cordella with piombini the name of the precursors of the fuselli (bobbins). Please, forgive me if this has been already mentioned and I didn't notice it. Now in the newstsands, at least in Germany, there is the September issue, I've seen it in the site of s German seller. I know In the September issue there is the preview for the October issue, too. Hello All, today I received the books on Puncetto and called the bookshop for further info on books I didn't bought. The books : Manuale del puncetto valsesiano, A. Petterino Camaschella, Valsesia Editrice Puncetto Valsesiano - Le stelle , Anna Axerio Pugno, Edito a cura del Centro Libri Puncetto Valsesiano - Le puntine , Anna Axerio Pugno, Edito a cura del Centro Libri Puncetto valsesiano - Gli angoli, Anna Axerio Pugno, Edito a cura del Centro Libri Manuale del puncetto colorato, published from the school of puncetto but available from Centro Libri. I have no affiliation with Centro Libri, only bought two books on puncetto from them. I phoned them and they said they accept foreign orders. I've their email address but I don't know if the rules of this list allow me to write it. As for the online museum, I wrote a message asking them to contact me, as soon as I'll have news I'll write about it. I, unfortunately, live more than 800 km far from Padova where the owner of that museum does live. I know there are, beside the Manual, four books : one devoted to stelline (little stars) , like medallion to put on curtains or to use as doilies (I ordered this) one devoted to angoli (corners), for ... well, corners ! one devoted to puntine (little points), to make the pointed edges for fabric or, again, curtains The newest book is on puncetto with more than one colour, I've been told it's a very difficult technique.
