Re: [lace] Czech lace tablecloth

2020-04-02 Thread catherinebar...@btinternet.com
Amazing and wonder just how long it would have taken to work such a huge
border? Does anyone know of a video demonstrating the process of
attaching a needlelace border to linen fabric. I guess with a straight
edge like this, one would draw a thread in the linen and attach by
sewing with matching thread and a three sided stitch, but how would one
attach an undulating/curved border of corded Brussels?

Subject: [lace] Czech lace tablecloth
Hi Arachne!
I hope you are all staying safe and healthy indoors during these strange
times.
I'm doing a little bit of research into this lace-trimmed tablecloth and
was wondering if any of our Czech community could tell me anything about
it:
https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/229528?searchField=All&sortBy=Relevance&deptids=12&when=A.D.+1900-present&where=Czechoslovakia&ft=lace&offset=0&rpp=20&pos=1

Having done some quick preliminary research it looks like the donor
Ludmila
Brumlik may have been a Czech doctor who emigrated to Montclair, NJ. I'm
very interested in trying to figure out the region where this may have
been
made, or even a potential maker? Any leads are much appreciated!
Best Wishes,
Elena

Don't forget Them Westhope Group who were all Guinea Pigs, as they were named,
being a small selection who were the first to sit the City & Guilds Lace
examination. One had to be invited to join the group and numbers were limited
to the number of beds available at Anne Dyer's residence. I recall Sue
Willoughby (chair of The UK Lace Guild at that time) Cynthia Voysey and Susanne
Thompson both renowned for their expertise in Honiton Lace, Barbara a Underwood
of Bedfordshire fame, Ann Collier contemporary bobbin and Needlelace, Carol
Williamson Needlelace and several others whose names I cannot recall at this
moment. Ann Collier, Susanne Thompson and myself were the three assessors who
assessed the practical work of The Guinea Pigs.

Re: [lace] The English Lace School- Susan Cox

2018-05-15 Thread catherinebar...@btinternet.com
Some were just weekends, some were 4/5 days and classes ran throughout the
whole year. There were other residential establishments but these were run by
local Borough Council educations authorities such as Missenden Abbey, Knuston
Hall, Northampton etc. Ann Collier, Pat Earnshaw, Mo Gibbs, Nenia Lovesey, Pat
Perryman, Yo Pauwels, Susanne Thompson, Lilly Trivett, Doreen Wright, Joan
Buckle, Joan Merrifield, Lia Baumeister, Pamela Nottingham, Bridget Cook,
Berthe Kemp, all taught at The English Lace School which 'was founded in 1979,
in order to provide a centre for the study of lace in this country, to teach
the English laces, supply equipment and to offer many other related aspects of
the Craft - such as Conservation, Study Tours, Commissions for lace and liaison
with other countries and their lace makers.' In 1983 there was a Belgian Tour
from 9th - 22nd May! I went twice to Zele, Belgium where we took classes with
Agnes Stevens and my goodness I recall how cold it w!
as there that winter! There was another tour to Belgium in 1985 from 23rd
September - 5th October.
Quite a list of well known tutors/authors!

Not sure where the Spriggs collection is now but it was at Rougemont House,
Exeter I think the last I heard.

Hope this helps

LThe English Lace School was the first residential lace school in the Uk, first
based in Tiverton, Devon and started by Susan & Roger Cox, later moving to
larger premises in Rockbear, Devon. Sadly Susan passed away some 2/3 years ago
but while the school was still running, she was custodian of the Doctor Spriggs

by Christine and David Springett. Both establishment engaged the cream of UK
tutors with such names as Marjorie Carter, Cynthia Voysey, Loretta Clark, Carol

I agree with Alex on this one as a great deal of thought goes into writing a
'how to/instruction book' and a good book will have patterns with instructions
in a progressive order, each pattern building on previous knowledge whilst
introducing a new technique.

Re: [lace] Arachne Lurker's Complaints

2016-01-20 Thread catherinebar...@btinternet.com
Good morning all
My goodness, how would we manage without Jeri! I posted an email on Arachne
just last week I think it was, from a young lady who emailed me personally,
needing information on lace in fashion for her dissertation. I received
several offers of help for her and as one would expect, a very lengthy email
full of practical advice for her from Jeri. I thanked Jeri and passed on the
information to the young lady, pointing out that Jeri had clearly spent a
considerable amount of time and effort In collating all this information
specifically for her and that I was sure she would appreciate an
acknowledgement/thank you. She replied she was truly grateful for the
extremely useful information from Jeri and that she would email her personally
(I hope she did Jeri) and this young lady doesn't even subscribe to arachne as
she didn't know of its existence!
Jeri didn't have to do this, but as aways, was one of the first to help with
suggestions of where to go for additional information and places to visit.
Please Jeri, don't take offence as I'm sure that like myself, none of us think
you have 'an attitude'. The written word can so easily be misunderstood at
times and it's so easy to offend an individual, without even trying or meaning
to!

Dear Spiders
I received the email below yesterday from a young lady, which is self
explanatory and if anyone can help her with the information for her
dissertation, please email me privately and I will send you her email address.
She has given me permission to do this and I do recall someone in France being
commissioned to make bobbin lace for a fashion house. I can't remember the
details but do recall though that it was beautiful!
Many thanks

different types of lace and what types are currently used within Britain. I
initially chose this subject as my grandma makes bobbin lace as a hobby, she
creates beautiful pieces (despite being still a beginner herself) and so I was
inspired to find out more about it.

Re: [lace] Thread for needle lace?

2015-06-07 Thread catherinebar...@btinternet.com
Hi Susan

Yes I've used it and liked it very much. It was a good few years ago when the
OIDFA Conference was held here in the UK at Nottingham University. I worked a
stumpwork castle in a terracotta coloured variegated thread and it was lovely
to work with. I was asked to teach Hollie Point (being considered to be an
English Needlelace) but thought the castle would make a little light relief If
any of the students grew tired/bored working just the one stitch for 3/4 days,
as one does need to have total concentration to work the Hollie Point!

I'll send you a photo of it privately, so that you can see how it worked up.
