Re: [lace] A Sorrel Leaf orts

2010-01-26 Thread Celia Mulhearn

An ort is a bit of thread left over from a project. That little bit left on
the needle or bobbin or

I work in a pre-school (for ages 3-5yrs) and I save my ' orts' in an old
sweet jar to be used by the children for their collage work with lots of
glue they get used for hair, clouds etc. I have even got the
ladies from my lace class saving them and I go home each week with a
small bundle of threads in my bag. I quite often think the jar is
getting full but when I push the threads down find it's only half full :))

[lace] A Sorrel Leaf orts

2010-01-23 Thread hottleco
Hello All! Boo-yah, the small Sorrel leaf is sewn off the pillow!! Many
thanks to Jacquie, who generously came to my rescue with excellent advice.
Before I tackle my next motif, I wanted to share a project for your orts. I
have this lovely pile of spent Sorrel threads recall that someone posted
about orts recently. Some years ago, Martha Greene handed out plastic sandwich
baggies sewn to paper in the shape of a doll. She called them wad dolls but
a friend updated that to Little Ortan Annie. Make a simple line drawing of a
doll on paper, then using your machine on the longest stitch, sew the plastic
bag onto the paper following your line. I used YLI variegated machine thread
so it was colorful. Start below the outstretched arm, around the arm, head,
other arm, down the A-line dress, across the hem, down the leg, around the
toe/shoe, the other toe/shoe, hem again, then start up the other side of the
dress. Stop. Leave thread tails about a 1 opening. Res
tart sew a 2nd line of stitching just inside the 1st. Leave thread tails.
Gently remove the paper from the bag. It will come loose easily as it will
tear on the perforations made by the stitching. Use tweezers to groom your
stitching. Stuff your doll with orts, beads etc. using a chop stick use the
thread tails to sew the opening shut. Be careful not to press the chop stick
through the stitching!!! Use pinking shears to cut out the fininshed doll
shape. These make fun Christmas ornaments, gift ties etc. Any simple shape
will do, although the dolls lend themselves to more creative use of color,
beads etc. We did this as a silly activity at EGA had dolls with red hair,
a heart charm bead shoes. For those of you who only work with white
thread, you must be satisfied with making angels! G At LG summer school,
one of the other students works with crafters, so if someone could pass along
this info, that would be great as I don't know how to reach her.
Enjoy your weekend. Sincerely, Susan, sunny 83* in Islam!

Thank you Patty, and to Susan who replied to me privately.
I had not heard the term until now!
I call them 'thread ends' those bits of left over thread :)
