[lace] Beds lace in silk
Anyway, I have decided to try a piece from Yvonne Scheele-Kerkhof's beautiful Floral Bedfordshire book, and hope I don't upset the purists by making Beds in colored silk. Is it always made in cotton? Janice I made a couple of Springett's Beds handkie edges in silk, and mounted them on some cream Bridal silk - and we all thought them lovely. However, both christine Springett andf Barbara Underwood saw them and went Yuk Beds lace, apparently, is supposed to be crisp and firm and lay straight when laid over the hand, - not soft and 'flowing' like my silk lace! Still, I still love my lace, - and so do most people who see it!!:)) I think one of them is on my Arachne community webshots. - Yes Beds Handkie 2 (Beds handkie 1 is not shown!) So go ahead, Janice, and just enjoy making the silk lace, - and blow others who think it is politically incorrect!!! (I am trying hard to be polite!!!) Re: [lace] Beds lace in silk
Morning fellow spiders Oh does this sound familiar!! Some people make lace as it was made in the past, and are happy. some don't. IMHO, we are making lace as a hobby. We have a wealth of fibres, colours, threads at our disposal. If any individual wants to scale up a pattern, scale down a pattern, work in silk, wire, cotton, linen, in red, orange black, sky-blue-pink with variegations they can!!! At the end of the day, it should be up to the individual what they work with, in, and what they do with the lace afterwards! Who are we to say whether they are right or wrong? Let's make lace in the style and method appropriate to us as people! Whatever Beds is supposed to be like, I reckon soft and flowing is much more appropriate for a hankie edging than crisp and firm - we don't want anyone scratching their eye as they ostentatiously wipe away a tear at a wedding or funeral, do we... Also like artists painting on canvas, we try something and see whether we like it more or less. We develop a style that suits us and it would be a poorer place if we all had to conform. Yes I love to see beautiful tradition lace but I also love to see all the other styles and trials we are able to view though the groups and the internet. Long may it continue.
