Re: [lace] Card exchange
I went round for Sandras last lace session this year, her first year of learning to make lace. Your card and lace are on show and she was delighted with it. We looked more closely at the individual elements on your very pretty piece and I explained the stitches to her. She was pleased to know that she had done almost all of those stitches, including adding 2 beads on a Christine Springette snake. Yours was her 4th piece of complete lace. Sue T for Sandra Ward. Re: [lace] Card exchange
I have received a lovely Christmas card from Janet Theaker! The lace ornament is white with gold edging, and a sweet gold charm in the center--I love it! I'm still trying decide whether to hang the ornament on the tree or keep it on the card. It will be beautiful either way. Many thanks to Janet! I also thank Janet and Sallie for organizing our exchange and to Jenny for posting all the photos afterwards. I got my Lace Card exchange from Sue Duckles from England in the mail today. Hello All! Every year I watch in awe envy as the holiday cards are revealed! They are wonderful again this year of course I didn't get one because I didn't send one!! Perhaps a New Year's resolution? g Thank you Janis for posting the pricking for Jean Horne's nativity. When I printed it from Flickr, it came out less than 2 tall that doesn't seem like the correct scale. Is there a way to print this pattern at true size or can you post the correct size so I can try to adjust? It's a very sweet pattern I love the starry sky! Lovely lace by all Arachnids. [lace] Card exchange and free pattern
I mailed my cards just after Thanksgiving and have already received one back from Trenna Ruffner. A very nice point ground motif. The card is on my mantlepiece at the moment. My card is a simple pattern which I designed to make a star for next years IOLI convention in St.Paul, Minnesota. You can find the pattern in my Pattern Gallery on www.jblace.com I was just asked for permission to use one of my old Christmas tree patterns for a booklet and it reminded me that I meant to post the link on Arachne. This year we did not get our partners email addresses so we will have to post our acknowledgments here. Thanks Trenna. Did about an hour of BL this afternoon but in the privacy of our room. During the Christmas season there is no place to sit in public because of the huge tree and decorations and the fact that the lounge is taken over for expensive afternoon tea. www.jblace.com http://www.lacemakersofillinois.org - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Christmas Lace Card Exchange
Hi everyone, Yes it is late coming. As no one else has jumped in to run the exchange this year I am volunteering with Jenny Brandis's help. She will archive the pictures and any pricking you are willing to donate on her site. As we are starting so late, our time table is a little skewed and making time will be shorter. Anyone interested in participating in the exchange has until October 31 to send me their name, address, and where they would like to send/receive a card from. If you are willing, or want, to do more than one include that information also. I will match everyone up and send out your addresses to each other no later than November 2nd. Please try to complete your lace and have it in the mail by December 5th. Please ensure that you send a photo of your lace to me or Jenny so we can post them on her site. [lace] Card Exchange
Wow! Did I get a surprise this past week! I knew for certain that I would eventually receive my Christmas card from my partner, Joepie, just didn't know how special it would be. I've even put off looking at the page of all of the exchanges so I'd be surprised! Joepie sent her card in plenty of time, early December. But it looks as if our local mail was a huge hang-up! With the stack that contained her card, were letters sent from my own town dated December 12. Boy, has the service heard about that! They suspect someone in the neighborhood mistakenly received it and held onto it until after a trip or somethingRR. Back to the lovely card! It is a beautiful bangle style ornament with multiple thread types. Very Pretty! She also sent a very nice Milanese snake bookmark! What a great surprise!!! Joepie, thank you so much and I hope you understand why my thank you is so late in coming. I did have faith that it would arrive, given the odd weather delays. My son just received a package from the midwest that was sent before the holidays, a bit worse for the wear. To those that haven't participated in any of the exchanges, I really encourage you to try it. It is so nice to communicate with others that are on the list. It's fun to meet new people that might not post very regularly, and discover the type of skills others may have! Our organizing geniuses for these exchanges are treasures to the group. Thank you all! Hello Everyone, I recently received a lovely bobbin lace candle ornament from my partner, Nicky Howener-Townsend, in Suffolk. It is made from white and gold metallic thread. [lace] Card exchange - and Scam reminders
Good Morning, Lacemakers! There has been an immediate interest in the Card Exchange, and it appears that we will have another good season of cards! If you have sent me an email and I have not responded, it is because I may not have gotten it. Ask a friend to forward it for you (preferably someone on a different ISP). I just need to tell everyone that the scam artists have begun their work... please don't be misled by what you get in your email box. Yesterday, I received a stern notice from Bank of America telling me that there was evidence that someone had tampered with my account, and to please log on (they gave a link) to update my account information. r-i-g-h-t.. I don't even have a BOA account! So if you ever got a similar email and *do* have an account, don't respond to the email but call your bank immediately. Today, I got a notice from PayPal (or so they said...), saying that my account had expired and to please log on to update the information... etc same drill. I happen to know that PayPal accounts don't expire. Again, if you get this message, do NOT respond to it. If you're concerned about your account, go directly to your PayPal account (*don't* use the link in the email!) and write to their customer service department. Sorry to have posted this along with bona-fide lace content, but if it helps even one of you avoid financial assault, then it's worth it. In answer to your question Janice, the Thatched building was taken from the web when we were looking for a traditional local building style to make up the card. I wanted something that would fit the area and the season and my DH was 'playing nicely' hence the sign which he added to the picture. I hadn't liked any of the cards I had already bought to work for Alices card and we were talking about what could be used instead. To my eyes, that one just said Christmas in the countryside in England. Alice is able to remove the picture and replace it with any picture/photo she wants to in the future. While researching our families we did find a number of family members running pubs during the last over a 100 years (and my cousin runs and is chef in a place in Wales rather than Dorset but I dont think his has a thatched roof). Bill is rather proud of his name and the tartan and crests that have gone along with it. I think the standard of lace exchanges is always incredible and its brilliant to see everyone elses ideas , artistry and work. Sue T in dull and damp Dorset where we are just recovering from a weekend early christmas visit. Now we need some Dorset sunshine to brighten up our day. I was just looking through the Arachne card exchange again and I noticed that the card from Sue Turnbull had a photo of a thatched building with a sign saying Turnbull Arms. Sue, do you run a pub or is it just a sign you have on your house? It looks very attractive in the snow. I always scan things that are flat, or photograph anything that wont go into the scanner and save them to disc along with the name of the person it came from, I can always check through my discs if I dont remember something (sometimes takes a bit of time to find though:-) and also from time to time save all lacy things onto one disc as well, so its easier to access these images. My stack of important lace patterns and documents is getting out of control and needs some sorting, gathering and binding. Mind you when I haven't got any lace actually working on my pillow I do look through the stack and enjoy what I see, my list of those patterns I want to do grows longer than the time allows to make them. g Sue T, Dorset UK Joking apart it must be horrible to know you have been given something, then in time you forgetting who the things are from. I like the fact that Lori printed her design on a card and then attached the lace so you could take it off and put it on the tree and still have the card. One other tip which I should have done sooner is to add the name and address of the sender on the back. I have some cards that only have the first name inside and as I say, my memory is getting worse as I grow older. It is nice to look back and see where in the world they have all come from. [lace] Card exchange website update
Hello one and all As we are drawing nearer to the time we make/send our cards for the 2008 Arachne Card Exchange I thought it was timely to remind you that we would like a photographic record of your work to be placed on the upcoming website. For the new ones amongst us - we have for the last 4 years recorded the cards on a website each year (see below) and the last 2 years has seen a selection of patterns also available for download due to the generosity of the individual designers. 2007 http://www.brandis.com.au/Arachne/2007/index.html 2006 http://www.brandis.com.au/Arachne/2006/index.html 2005 http://homepage.mac.com/bejoyce/arachne2005/ 2004 http://homepage.mac.com/bejoyce/arachne/ FYI The first internet recorded exchange was bookmarks in 2001 http://lace.lacefairy.com/Gallery/Bookmarks/BookmarkMenu.html During the 2006 and 2007 card exchange we have been lucky enough to have some of the original patterns provided along with the photos of the respective cards. These patterns were converted to PDF format and placed on the website along with the photos. The 2006 the patterns were provided by Ilske Thomson, Janice Blair and Daphne Martin and have been downloaded a total of 1373 times to date. and the 2007 file of patterns provided by Ilske Thomson, Janice Blair, Daphne Martin, Sue Clothier, Jeanette Fischer, Elizabeth Fisher, Elizabeth Atkinson and Brenda Paternoster has been downloaded a total of 1992 times to date. So check out the past cards and see that no matter what level of lace maker you are, no matter what type of lace you make - your card will be most welcome! Re: [lace] Card Exchange
Dear Miriam, I hope it was my late card that you have received. I'm so sorry that I may have spoiled you joining another exchange. I did mail them out late due to family emergencies and travels, even though I finished them in the summer. Yours also just arrived on January 5th. It is quite lovely! I can't tat very well and truly appreciate the work you have done. I'm trying to set up a system to show the cards off better next year by placing them all in an altered book. Last year, I also missed receiving a card from a partner. It's still worth it to me to take a chance to keep the beauty of lace circulating. Re: [lace] Card exchange
I did not get my card in the exchange until last week, and immediately emailed Alice and the lady who sent to me to say how beautiful it was. When I last checked a picture of it had not been put on Jenny's site, and I still do not know if the lady in question received mine, although I had posted it at the end of November. Maybe people are so busy recovering from the season's social round that they do not have time for anything else, but it is such a shame. I am really happy for the Christmas card exchange. I had to wait a littlebut it is fault of mail services...I received my first card from Debora just after Christmas and the second one from Janice just yesterday. Am I the only one that had a satisfactory card exchange?? Jeanette Fischer, Western Cape, South Africa. - - I was happy with receiving a card before Christmas from Alessandra, in Italy, but was disappointed that my card sent airmail at the beginning of December took until now to get to her. This is the first time I have had a problem and I have taken part in the exchange for many years. I paid for it to go airmail, although here now everything overseas is sent at Priority mail prices, supposedly there is no such thing as airmail in the US now. Alessandra will have to do what I do, that is, next Christmas, display all the lace cards she has. Mine usually come out every year and make a nice display. Hi all, I did not take part in the card exchange, but would ask you not to be too quick to blame your partners if the cards are late in arriving as the mail does sometimes take a very long time to arrive in distant parts at this time of the year. My daughter sent me an envelope on the last day of air mailing from England to New Zealand and it has only just arrived!!! Also this is the time of year when Kiwis and Aussies are away on holidays at the beach etc., and some will only just be getting home again ready for work this week! Just a word of warning from a Kiwi in the sun to your poor people in colder climes. Oh dear, Sue... I'm so sorry to hear you didn't get a card! They should have at least let you know that it had been mailed... and certainly they sould have sent Jenny a picture. Unfortunately, this happens every year, it seems. I do hope that organizers will make note of those who do not keep their end of the bargain and will not allow them to participate again. Re: [lace] Card Exchange
Dear Lacefriends, we have grey sky since ten days that's why I could take a picture from the pricking of my star I send to Barbara. Meanwhile I sent pictures to Jenny with the plea to put it to the card pictures. the aim of my christmas card was to design something which could make from those who want do it too a bit individual. So I created the star into the star, simple and clear and with less filling for the bigger one that both make one thing. There is the possibility to make a third one bigger or smaller. The both I did are 100% and 80%. You can create your own filling. And you can put them together not at one point but lay the point of the second star into the inner corner You see with one pricking there are several possibilities. Wish you fun making it. [lace] Card Exchange site official unveiling
Hello everyone I realise some of you worked out how to access the 2007 Card Exchange site before now J but for those of you who have not done so yet, this is the official launch of the ... drum roll please Arachne http://www.brandis.com.au/2007/index.html 2007 Card Exchange Website We have been very lucky as five, people have very generously provided their pricking too and I have made a PDF file of those for you. BTW those of you who checked out the site early you have missed the latest version of this file as well as the later additions to the card selection. IF your card does not appear on this site - Then for some reason I have not received it. Please resend the email and I will have the card up and online before Christmas Day! Probably because I chose the wrong time to buy a new computer and transference became an issue. I dont seem to be adjusting to Vista like I expected and all sort of things have taken longer than I expected. Having to buy new software has been a real drain but it is interesting to see that Lace 2000 works with it without a hiccup J It would be nice if someone with more lace experience than me could make a list of the lace types used this year, I would like to have that added to the site for learning purposes. So far I have worked out there is 1. Torchon 2. Bedfordshire 3. Knitting 4. Tatting 5. Macramé 6. Hardanger 7. SGravenmoerse 8. [lace] Card Exchange 2nd Notice
The Lace Christmas Card Exchange is getting organized. Many people have already signed up for it. If you missed the first notice, here is a recap. Each person who signs up is given a partner. The two partners exchange cards. The card must have some kind of handmade lace ON or IN it. The card itself can be either handmade or purchased. The lace can be any kind of lace: needle, bobbin, knitted, tatted, battenberg, etc. Each person can sign up for one, two or three exchanges. The cards are to be mailed by Dec 5. Consider carefully how much time you have to invest in this project before signing up for multiple cards but the energetic people may do more than one. When the cards are finished, either the sender or receiver should scan the card/lace and send it to Jenny at www.brandis.com.au/2006/index.html. Jenny has kindly offered to post the pictures of the cards on her website so we can all see them. Partners should arrange between themselves who will send the scan. It was suggested that you include the source of the pattern with the scan, as well as who made it and who received it. If the pattern is your own design, and you're willing to share, it could also be sent to Jenny. And, of course, send a thank you to your partner so she or he knows the card was received. Greetings to all the people signed up for the lace card exchange. You have only two weeks left to get your cards in the mail. The goal is to have them mailed by Dec. 1. Then email (or snail mail) your favourite ones of those photos to me, to be added to our 2006 Arachne Christmas Card Exchange Showcase? I would prefer you * ATTACH the photos to the email (I can resize them for you if you wish) * do not resize too small - we would like to see the picture without the 'fuzzy' * note if you would like me to leave the photo alone (I may edit backgrounds out etc) * Include in the email - Your name, town and country * Include in your email - where you got the design, designer (if known), pricking size, threads used, or any other information you would like to see. * If it is your own design, please let me know if you are willing to sell/give the pattern to other Arachnians. As it is getting close to that time now, I thought I would put a few (hopefully) helpful tutorials online at www.brandis.com.au/2006/emails.html to assist you when it comes time to send me the photos of your cards. I can send you my snail mail address if you do not have a scanner/digital camera and do not have access to any. Alternately the recipient may have this ability so when you post the card, ask if they would do the honours this time. If you have any questions or suggestions about this, please email. [lace] lace card exchange wrap-up
Hi everyone What fun it has been to organize the card exchange. I recall that a lacemaker in Europe organized a small but successful card exchange on this list several years ago (simultaneous with an ornament exchange which got more 'takers' at the time). She posted the pictures of the cards, too. I have forgotten who it was, but if she is reading this, please know that it was the start of something good! I have loosely kept track, and there are only about a dozen unresolved despatches. If you haven't received your card yet, don't panic – it is probably wending its way to you in the post (now, if you haven't made your card yet, better let me know! eek!). We had 53 despatches, with several people each sending to two recipients (and getting two cards in return, from others). I put the particulars in a database with these fields: your name; your preference to send (type of lace, local mail or overseas); the name of your recipient; preference for receiving; a column to indicate I have sent you your recipient's name. I added a 'sent' column when people started letting me know they had mailed their cards – that was neat, everyone! And as people would write that they received their cards, I put a notation in their recipient field. This information was not a condition of the exchange – but it seemed like a good idea, and has helped through a couple of glitches. It is very kind of Barbara to post pictures of the cards on her website. I think this is our largest exchange of any kind, yet, or close to it, and she has been working hard preparing the website. It will be lovely when the curtain is raised. Many thanks, Barbara! Speaking of the photos: The database could use a 'sent photo' column as well (and a 'no photo, thanks anyway' column, too). I suggest the photos should really be sent to the web person after the cards have been received, giving people a chance to have their card in hand, first. It completes the despatch, then the next logical thing is to send the photo, less chance of confusion about who should send it, because that can be decided between the sender/recipient (supposing one or the other doesn't have a scanner etc.) Which reminds me – include the e-mail address in your card when you send it! You will want to be in touch with each other, especially the recipient to thank the sender, then decide who wants to send the photo of the card. It was good to begin the exchange early in October, to give plenty of lead time for lacemaking. If everyone likes the sequencing system (A to B to C etc.), then a circle can be begun and ended, say, with each group of 20 or so names, as they come in, rather than wait until the cutoff date for taking names to assign the exchanges (I didn't wait either – I made two main circles and a v small circle, a 'satellite' g at the very end). As a participant, I would like to know to whom I will be sending my lace before I start working it – you can put more heart into it g. For those who need plenty more lead time: if you want, do work on a suitable lace during the year, at your own speed, then you'll be prepared when the card exchange comes around. The deadline for mailing could be brought ahead to 1 December. Those who experience unavoidable interruptions won't be too late in mailing if they miss by a day or three, as usually the overseas deadline for airmail is on or about 5 Dec. Two other things I would do differently: the first is that the preferences would be about mailing only and not what sort of lace you want or will send. As we discussed at the beginning of this exchange, most everyone agrees that any lace is welcome - we all take our work seriously, and it is a gift indeed to be given a piece of lace made by another lacemaker. The mailing preferences, for most, it won't matter, but for some, mailing on the same continent is better, or within a country they will be visiting, and it has helped in the matchmaking (as it were) to know these things. It is even ok to ask for a sender in a different climate – that was fun to arrange. The second thing: Someone suggested I include those on lace-chat in the exchange, so I did. This was ok, but those several people who responded didn't get the benefit of all the messages sent to lace; it was time-consuming trying to keep them in the loop as matters evolved. Another time I wouldn't bother on account of the logistics – it would be better to organize an exchange directly on the lace-chat list if someone wanted to do so To reiterate the basis of the exchange: With the cards posted at Barbara's site, a person can get a good idea of the sort of cards that people send. The bottom line is 'a lace card', i.e. your lace on a card. It can be a snippet of something against a picture background, or a complete ornament that can be taken off the card or a collage or an artwork or whatever, knitted, tatted, bobbin lace, needlelace, Romanian point lace, Battenberg, as long as it is lace and the card is made by you. Hi everyone When I read that I realised that Bev had put us into a triangle as I received a card from No actually the triangles weren't intentional, but in some cases it worked out that way. And in other cases there were 'direct' exchanges (A and B exchanged). It has been an interesting exercise - I am writing a lace exchange document vbg to share with you all - (not to worry, it will be chatty) there are some things to be learned for next year. I've been terribly remiss about this. I need to thank Aurelia for the lovely green and gold bobbinlace ornament she sent me. We didn't put up a tree this year (hubby and I will be in Las Vegas for Christmas) so the ornament has been gracing my cube at work. It'll join my other lace ornaments at home in January. And as I see from the list, she's already sent a scan of the ornament, which is almost as great a gift :D It takes me forever to get pictures off the camera and onto the web. I'm glad you will all be able to see it, it's quite pretty. Thanks again, Aurelia! Chris - and to all a happy holiday of your choosing!! Karen has made a stunning Buckspoint star and has mounted it on a copper toned card which will be perfect for hanging as an ornament. I enjoy making Buckspoint lace and so doubly appreciate the time taken to make this lovely card! Thanks again to Bev for organizing this fun activity - I am so glad I took part in it this year! Karen, have you sent a scan to Barbara or would you like me to send it along? Jane in sunny Sault Ste. Re: [lace] last reminder for lace card exchange!
Hi Bev, thank you for your patient reminders. Today I posted the 2nd Lace Christmas Card. It remains in Europe and should soon arrive in Britain. The 1st Card started its longer jouney to South Africa last Saturday. It was a bit late, but I still hope that it soon will arrive. It was definitely great fun to join again and I have already the 2 cards which I received in my living room on display and treasure the letters which came with them. I will mail the scan of the cards I made. But I did the same pattern on each of them. [lace] lace card exchange
Hi everyone and especially Fay Owers in Australia, I just had to brag about the wonderful lace Christmas card that I received yesterday from Faye Owers in Tasmania, Australia. It contained a beautiful bobbin lace angel ornament with a very unusual property - she glows in the dark. As soon as we got the mail last night, my 6-year-old daughter and Iraced to a closet to check it out. She really does glow beautiful in the dark and now she hangs proudly on our Christmas tree. I assume it was the stiffening agent that makes her glow. What did you use for that? Thank you so much, Faye! Lisa Thompson in Plano, Texas USA where we've got from 89F to 39F in just a couple of days. P.S. Did you already send a scan to Barbara or would you like me to send one for you? - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] card exchange
Hi Bev, I know the deadline is tomorrow for the card exchange, and I have sent and received my cards already, but I cannot find the email that I know I saved regarding the email address that we are to send our scans to for the web page. Can you repeat that information as I am sure I am not the only one to be forgetful. I will send a scan of the card I sent to Martina De Wille, in Schmidmuhlen, Germany. Jeanette, in Kleinmond, South Africa, would you like me to scan the card I received or have you sent a scan off already? Your card will go up with my other lace cards tomorrow as I am in the process of decorating my home for Christmas as I have a big party for my English group next Sunday, 29 for dinner! Lots of lace already on the tree but I have to collect other pieces that are on permanent exhibit around the house to add to them. Re: [lace] card exchange
I can fill in a bit of the information, and it's probably a good idea to furnish it to all. Please send a scan or photo of your lace--the one you made and/or the one you received to [EMAIL PROTECTED]. It would be interesting to learn a little more about the lace, such as who made it, to whom it was sent, what thread, the name of the designer, etc. I'll be happy to post almost anything you'd like to include. I have received a good number of scans (can't recall if I received one from Jeanette, and I'm not at the computer that has the scans on it, so I can't check right now), but am eager for more. So please get out that camera or scanner and join in the fun! Today I received an absolutely wonderful card from my lace exchange partner in England, Andrea Lamble. It's a darling multi-colored robin, and you'll all get to see him in a couple of weeks when the web site goes up. Bev, thank you so much for organizing this year's exchange. [lace] last reminder for lace card exchange!
Hi everyone, most especially those in the lace card exchange - you've all made your cards right? and sent them, or getting them to the PO asap?!! If you forgot to take a scan or digiphoto before mailing, perhaps your recipient can do so, and e-mail the picture to Barbara [EMAIL PROTECTED] who will post them to her website later on, after everyone has received their cards. Yes it has been fun. There were 53 pairings; some were in the cycle of A sending to Be sending to C Z sending to A - and others were directly paired when the cycle system got complicated. Now my Christmas wish is that everyone completed their part of the exchange ;) If, by December 20 you haven't received a card, please contact me -- bye for now Bev in Sooke BC (on Vancouver Island, west coast of Canada) Cdn. floral bobbins www.woodhavenbobbins.com - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] card exchange
Hi all, I sent my exchange card away to Australia today. I hope it has a safe trip overseas. I received a lovely card in the mail today from Dianne Taylor of Dunlap Tennessee. I will hang my red and gold BL candle on our tree when we get it up. I love having a new lace treasure to hang on the tree. Thank you Dianne, it is very pretty. Please e-mail me your e-mail address so I can thank you more personally? Now I'm really getting in the Holiday spirit, getting a pretty Christmas treasure on top of the very cold snap that has hit here. Puts me in a very Christmassy mood. Well, back to knitting furiously on the latest sweater project, this on for a young nephew. I think I may add a star to this one even though it isn't on the pattern. Suede yarn feels sooo good! [lace-chat] lace card exchange
I wanted to thank you for my lovely card and ornament. I received it last week and it is already on my lace Christmas tree. My card will be ready to mail to California before the deadline I hope. Oh a major miracle story to relate to you all (or all ya'll, since I am from the deep South). I told you about how heartsick I was not only that my sister's house and all her possessions had been washed and blown away by Hurricane Katrina, but also my lace display board with all my examples of different laces were lost with her house. Last week while trying to dig out my B-I-l's antique cars from the wreckage of the garage, my lace board was found half buried in the hardened mud. My sister dug it out and took the remaining lace pieces and sent them off to me. I haven't tried cleaning them yet, but I will. And another tidbit of great news, my sister's husband had given her a diamond necklace for their anniversary which was thought to be lost with the house was found near the sidewalk in front of what was their house. Why it hadn't been found weeks ago is a mystery but all are thankful that it was found. So two nice rescues from the ravages of Katrina. It looks like a beautiful place to live by the water. The card had a lace wreath on the front made of tiny talleys in four different colors of red and green edged with yellow and red sparkly thread. Thank you Jeanette and Happy Christmas. Now that I am feeling a little better I hope to get to the post office soon to send my card to Germany. Re: [lace] lace card exchange
My lace is made, and I was getting ready to send it early when my guild president 'requested' me to bring it to the next meeting on Dec. 1. We got word that a reporter was going to be there to take pictures and my president wants my ornaments on display before I give any of them away. I can make the required deadline, but it won't be real early. (sigh) Such go the best laid plans of mice and lacemakers. So -- I can have everything ready, and stuff the envelope and mail it on the way home from the meeting. Otherwise, I've been making a variety of ornaments. It's been a bit fun going through all my notebooks for patterns that are different, and trying some of them. I've also added soft wire as the headside gimp on some of them. Re: [lace] lace card exchange in progress!
Thanks, Bev--here's my email address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]. There will be an Arachne 2006 web site, but it won't be published until everyone has mailed their cards and time has been allowed for the recipients to receive them. Senders and recipients alike are welcome to send a scan or snapshot of the card/lace they sent and/or received. I plan to put the page up and publish the URL on or about December 15th. I will be happy to continue to receive and add additional new items for as long as they are sent to me. (I was still adding scans in February 2005 for the Christmas 2004 exchange!) When you send your scan/photo, it would be great if you would include a bit of information, such as who made the lace, where the maker lives, who designed it, what thread(s) were used, the name and location of the recipient, etc. I've already received the first two photos for this year's gallery! To see last year's page, please visit http://homepage.mac.com/bejoyce/arachne/. Barbara Joyce Snoqualmie, WA USA Hi everyone The lace card exchange is well underway. I have it on record that everyone is working on their laces, and some have finished. She will post pictures at her web site, in due course - viz. after your recipient has received the lace! [lace] Lace card exchange reminder
Hi everyone I have sent out nearly all the assignments to those taking part in the card exchange and I hope to send the remaining, a.s.a.p. If you had signed up early on, and haven't heard anything from me yet - please let me know, in case I don't have you on my list. There is still time to sign up - I am taking names until November 1, and will then close the circle, as it were. Here is the how-to: When you have signed up, I assign one person to send to another (A send to B, B sends to C etc. all the way through to Z sends to A). Last year I received a beautiful Torchon lace candle on a card from Antje in Spain. My recipient, Anne in England, got a snowflake that I'd made from Tamara's 2-pair Inventions. The deal is, make a lace Christmas card - that's it. It can be a lacey scene, or an ornament that can be taken off later, an art card, however way you want to use your lace.. If you wish to send something else, such as a postcard from your area, that is up to you. The minimum requirement is lace on a card that can be sent at basic letter rate (incl airmail). No one should expect more - or less - and here's the qualifier: * please do not sign up if you don't think you can make a card in time to send it before Christmas! we have had other exchanges in the past, and it is s disappointing to be on the neglected end :( For fun, so that everyone on tthe list can enjoy, we have a web page available from Barbara Joyce who can post pictures of the cards/laces - either from the lacemaker or the recipient. Please credit the designer if you are using a published pattern, or yourself if you are the designer! You can see some of last year's exchange cards here: http://homepage.mac.com/bejoyce/arachne/ so - To sign up, send e-mail to me with 'Christmas card exchange' in the subject line, let me know if you want to send to more than one person, and please include your mailing address. I'll take names until November 1 but will start assigning well before then. December 5 is the deadline for mailing. [lace] tatted lace, card exchange, etc.
Hi all! I am peeping out of lurk mode to put in my two cents. Having been a newbie to several different forms of lace at different times in my life I would like to share a little. About 20 years ago, I took my first lace class in tatting at the community center in the city I was living at the time. It took me years to make progress that I was happy with. I would work at it for about 6 months, get frustrated, take a 6 month break. Then I would start in making some headway before reaching a wall again. I only took an 8 week beginner class. I learned to make a ring, a chain and how to join to a picot. No finishing techniques or two shuttle, nothing fancy. I was encouraged by others who saw the development of my skills. Then a few years later I found this list. Mostly what I read about was Bobbin Lace. I hadn't a clue what that was. It was many years later that I finally took classes and learned how to make bobbin lace. In the mean time, I was teaching myself Richeleau and needle lace because I could find information about that at a craft or book store, plus I had a collection of appropriate thread by that time too, thanks to my tatting. Eventually I learned that there were threads on Arachne about tatting and even got up the courage to design tatting. I joined a beginners tatted doily round robin. It wasn't a total success for all of the participants in our group, but I came out with a beautiful doily. I had been afraid of joining the round robin because I still considered myself to be a beginner. It did inspire me to do more designing. I got encouragement and help from other tatters on the lace list. It was wonderful! I had seen many a flame sent and didnt want to be on the receiving end of one. I took a chance and was thrilled in the end. It boosted my confidence in my skills. I would encourage anyone who wants to to participate in the opportunities we have on this list, to expand your horizons and those of others who share our interest in lace. I have some beautiful bookmarks from a bookmark exchange. I received bobbin lace which I finally got to see in person and immediately decided I would have to learn. That was years ago and I am still only a beginner at bobbin lace, but I like to flit from one to the next challenge. I taught myself to crochet lace and a few sweaters. Since June 2005 I taught myself to knit with the goal of learning to knit lace. I have knit several sweaters thus far. I am feeling ready to start into the finer yarns and needles and something beyond stockinette and garter stitch. I apologize for going on forever, but my point is that there are generous people on this list who will give you a pep talk when you are discouraged. There is a wealth of knowledge from folks around the world on this list. I prefer to focus on the generous, kind and helpful people who have helped me over the years and the friends I have made. Please don't be offended by the comments some make because there are far more of us who would be thrilled to receive a piece of lace from someone else in the world who loves lace as much as we do. We will love that lace that you spent precious hours working on. We will proudly show off the wonder you sent us from whatever corner of the world you come from. I consider my fellow spiders to be family and I hope those who are new to the list will learn to think thus of us also.
