Issue Number 179, Summer 2020 has arrived on my doorstep.

Malvary in Ottawa where we have rain for a second day after a very long hot
summer. I think it is a side effect from Hurricane Isaias which is ploughing
its way north along the east coast of the U.S.

Re: [lace] UK Lace Guild magazine for April 2020

2020-06-06 Thread Malvary Cole

I got mine, in Canada.

However, I would suggest that anyone who hasn't received theirs should
contact The Lace Guild directly. They may decide that in view of the
current situation, that they will want to wait another couple of weeks
before sending replacements.

Malvary in a lovely sunny Ottawa where maybe next week it might be decided
that hairdressers can think about opening sometime in the next month or two
(already open across the border in Quebec - 2 km away). It has been 5
months and I am looking more and more like an old English sheepdog every
day.

Jeri – I think you should probably wait a bit longer. I only received my
copy last Friday, so they are still filtering through.

If your copy doesn’t arrive, can you claim anything from the post office,
after all it isn’t your fault that you are out of pocket nor should The Lace
Guild be either, come to that.

[lace] Lace Guild Magazine - Christine Johnson

2014-05-03 Thread Jill Harward
Dear Spiders,

My Lace Guild magazine arrived yesterday and I was over the moon to see the
pattern and working diagram of Christine Johnson's Medieval Garden and for
which Christine was awarded the John Bull Trophy for 'lace by a lacemaker
who is not a teacher'.

I just had to write to thank Christine, who I think is a member of Arachne -
she will not know me, I am generally a 'Lurker' but I felt compelled to
write to Christine for being so generous in submitting this pattern to the
magazine and the time spent originally working out a coloured diagram of the
technical drawing. I first saw the photo of the finished lace on the back
of issue Number 151 and just 'drooled' over it and wished it was a pattern
available to us.

Well my wish came true as here it is, looking absolutely beautiful again in
the current issue. I have been floundering a bit for the past five or six
months due to some sad family circumstances and doing a little bits on
pieces already on the go but none of them seem to pull me in to get
enthusiastic again. All I keep saying to my friends is that I need
'inspiring' but had no idea what to do, that is until I opened the Lace
Magazine yesterday and Woo Hoo! I cannot possibly do any justice to your
amazing piece Christine but you have spurred me on and at last I have found
my 'get-up-and-go' and diving into my cupboard for a spare pillow, bobbins
and thread!! I cannot wait to get started J I guess this is also giving
advance warning to Jacquie Tinch, our lace tutor just what I will be turning
up with in class - she is probably turning a nice shade of puce at the
thought - only joking Jacquie, she relishes a challenge!

That's it and all that is left is to say once again a huge thanks to
Christine for unknowingly lifting my spirits.

2014-05-03 Thread Anna Binnie
Christine is currently on a cruise and may not have email. She is on
Arachne so she will get your message. In 'real life' Christine is a
talented and generous lacemaker. She gave a wonderful presentation in
February on the use of Gimps. The presentation was at a NSW Lace Day.
She is going to give a lecture on her work on Tonder Lace at the NSW
October Lace Day and in November will give us a 2 day workshop on gimps.

She acts as 'mentor' to most of us at the Epping Lace group. I wish
there were more people like her!

As an aside, the NSW Lace Days this year are featuring our local lace
researchers, we have had Barbara Ballantyne talking on Irish Crochet,
Rosemary Shepherd on early laces. In June we will have Annette Meldrum
talking on Boris lace followed by a workshop in August on Boris Lace,
and Christine in October. We are blessed that some of the best
researchers are locals!

[lace] Lace Guild Magazine

2013-05-01 Thread Jane Partridge
Publication date for April's Lace is 30th April, ie yesterday, so given
the occasional vagaries of the postal system I don't count it as late
yet (others might disagree!). You should get it within the next day or
so, but if you haven't received it by 10th May either email or phone The
Hollies (contact details are on the website at www.laceguild.org ).

What happens with the April magazine is that it has the renewal form in,
so cannot be sent for printing until the members have decided the
subscription rate for the new membership year, and with the AGM being in
April it is a tight turn around for the printers and mailing house.
(This meant having the renewal form ready before the AGM, so that if the
recommended subscriptions were not passed it would only need a quick
amendment before going to print, thankfully the new rates were
approved!).

You will also have the Trustees Report and Accounts Summary with this
magazine, and a spare membership form (as with the renewal form, these
form the centre inserts) to pass on to a friend - we need new members!
On the back of both of these forms you will find direct debit forms -
the new year will see a reduction in subscriptions for those in the UK
paying by this method, but we need to have the applications back by 31st
May so that they can be processed before the renewal date of 1st July. A
copy of the membership application form is available on the website.

Any reports on convention (we welcome submissions from members!) and the
minutes of the AGM will be in the July issue - it would delay the April
magazine far too much to attempt to include them then.

[lace] UK Lace Guild magazine

2011-11-05 Thread Jane Partridge

I have replied to Pene personally.

There is a difference in the posting/delivery times for magazines sent
abroad, so the fact that those of us in the UK have received ours might
not help to see if there has been a hold up somewhere. I've asked Pene
to keep me informed as I shall be at The Hollies later in the week - in
the meantime, can any members in Australia, or other far flung places,
confirm (off list, to me, might be better) whether they have received
their magazines yet?

I think what is happening now, with the new distributor, is that all of
the magazines are being sent out at the same time, whereas before the
overseas copies went out a few days earlier so that all were received
around the same time. It can take 4 to 10 days to get from the UK to the
old Zone 2 countries, so it may be that these magazines are still in
the postal system somewhere.

In return, can anyone else in the UK who ordered the French stamps let
me know if they have received theirs yet - I'm wondering if there has
been a delay in sending those out?

In message 4eb50234.9040...@eggo.org, pene piip p...@eggo.org writes

I'm just wondering if anyone has recently received their copy.
I was informed that they were mailed out last week.

There's a new feature in the magazine this time - the green pages have gone
to make way for more colour pages. The information that used to be in the
green pages is now in the body of the magazine. I'm all in favour of that
now that coloured lace isn't uncommon. But does that mean there'll be no
more large prickings? Not complaining - just curious.

No, it doesn't - Deborah has kept the option to have the large sheet
once a year, but she was struggling to find anything large that needed
to go on it - as with all editors, she is dependent on what is sent in!
Losing the green pages was a sacrifice, but as you say, worth it to be
able to afford more colour - and the magazine will be a lot easier to
proof read from my point of view!

I'm just a bit miffed that you lot got yours yesterday - when I could
have done with mine (I've been demonstrating at a craft fair in
Sheffield all weekend, lots of interest, despite a fairly low
attendance) - I have seen it, at black and white photocopy (proof)
stage, I have handled it - helping put some of the foreign-bound copies
into envelopes at The Hollies last Monday, but haven't had a chance to
see what everything has come out like in colour yet! Oh well, maybe
tomorrow - I will be spending the day with my feet up (following a minor
op last Wednesday - the good thing about a weekend demonstrating is that
you get to relax and make lace without having to tend to the family and
cats!).

[lace] Lace Guild Magazine, Romanian Lace Book

2004-05-08 Thread A Thompson
It was kind of Jane to tell everyone in Lace-Chat that she had reviewed my
Romanian Lace Book in the current copy of the Lace Guild Magazine, and her
comments are very favourable, for which I thank her. However, I am concerned
that some innacuracies give a wrong impression of the format of the book.

Jane states that most of the content of the book is in black and white. This
is not so. Out of about 105 photos, only 25 are black and white, all the
others are in colour. All of the projects are in colour. Kathleen Waller and
I were faced with an offer to publish the book providing we would accept 2
pages colour followed by 2 pages black and white. Therefore it was an obvious
choice to print all the lace patterns with accompanying text in black and
white. A problem came with the photos and patterns of the various stitches.
The publishers wanted all of the stitch samples in colour. However, as
Kathleen so sensibly pointed out, that would mean that the worker had to turn
the page, which can be very irritating. So we insisted that each page in the
stitch section would feature one stitch photo, one stitch pattern and
accompanying text. As the original samplers were worked in grey and cream,
they translate well to black and white. The other few black and white photos
are in the Traditional lace section where colour was not important.

We chose to feature as much colour as possible in the lace and Jane has
highlighted this fact. No offence meant for anyone, I just want to set things
right.

In message [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes
Am I wrong in thinking that there should have been an April UK Lace Guild
Magazine? If so, did anyone get one?

As with many of the others, mine arrived this morning. In the January
issue there was a note that the April magazine would be late (I probably
would have missed that, too, but being a proof reader where Lace is
concerned I have to read *every* word - so for me it was a quick flick
to see what the pictures look like in colour, and read Betsy Bobbin
which isn't included in the proofs!) due to the relatively late date of
the AGM this year.

This is because the subscription renewal slips accompany the April
issue, and because the subscription rate is, if it is going to be,
changed at the AGM, these cannot be printed until afterwards. When I
took my Myth or Mystery entries over to the Hollies on Wednesday of last
week the staff were in the midst of overprinting the details onto the
slips (which had just come back from the printers) and then printing and
affixing the address labels (as you can imagine, this takes more than a
day to do, especially when there are only three people to do it).
Bearing in mind that the magazines go out second class post, it wasn't
bad going to get it today!

If anyone bothers to read the reviews, I did the one on Angela's book -
and yes, Mom did get her Christmas present - and very much appreciated
it - there wasn't space to print the review in the January issue so
although the comment was relevant when I wrote it, it probably seems a
bit strange at the beginning of May!

I don't know what the overseas rate will definitely be, but the UK
renewal has gone up the normal two pounds to 23.00 pounds - the first
rise in three years (it has previously tended to be alternate years for
price increases). Perhaps someone who attended the AGM (I couldn't go
this year) can put Tamara's mind at rest over the overseas rate? The
proposals on the Agenda (sent out with the January issue) were for 27.00
pounds Europe, 31.00 pounds Overseas.

[lace] Lace Guild Magazine / census

2003-07-30 Thread Jane Read
My Lace magazine has arrived and, Oh! I know its silly but I'm so chuffed.

The first tag of the lace census is pictured and its *my* design!

(well, half of it anyway)

This was my first ever Milanese design, and the first ever piece of
Milanese that I made. I know it has been around some time (Lily, Read
Kincaid no 1), but its so nice to think that the design is still liked.

Thank you, Marie Kell, for using it and putting it into the Lace Census.

Now, if I can only get on with my tag. I've 3 new designs to try out, but
2.75y toddler wants to paint. Sigh.
