And here in Phoenix, AZ. USA yesterday was 115 officially. My daughter recorded 117 in her car, my son 122, my car said 116. All F deg. Been a little toasty the last few days. End of next week maybe temps will come down to 109. Meanwhile we sizzle in our "dry" heat.. Lol. The price to pay for lovely winters. Re: [lace] June 21 International Lace Day
Making lace in public can take place in libraries, malls, parks, or anywhere a table and chair can be set up comfortably for the lace maker. I'm not sure scheduling a specific day is as important as the fact we want to share the experience and make others aware of the art of making lace. I thought the point was to get as many people making lace in public near or around the same time as possible to "spread the word worldwide." It wouldn't matter which day was chosen, it wouldn't be suitable for everyone. All it takes is one or more people getting out and doing it. It's kind of like yarn bombing. It gets attention. Re: [lace] June 21 International Lace Day
Hi, Okay, I'll come out of lurkdom to comment on this Jeri. In Australia Mothers Day is always the second Sunday in May and Fathers Day always the first Sunday in September. The northern hemisphere summer is of course our winter and definitely not conducive to making lace in the open, parks, etc. We celebrate Catterns Day in November as do the rest of the lacemaking world so we in South Australia, an probably the rest of our country, try to have a lace get-together around this date. For us in South Australia it is usually the third Tuesday of the month when we have our meeting - we enjoy friendship, games and and early Christmas party. We don't usually have a meeting in December but start back again with meetings towards the end of January. Thankfully we have an air conditioned venue so life bearable in the middle of our very hot summers. [lace] June 21 International Lace Day
As to conflict with Father's Day on June 21, 2015 in some nations - some people may think this is a perfect way to celebrate fathers. Arachne is an international group. My messages of June 15 and 16 have acknowledged that there are 365 days in a year, and that any specific date will be shared by other special events in some nations where lacemakers are located. In consideration of lacemakers everywhere, we also need to think about those in other climates when establishing a date to which we append the word "International", and so Spring or Fall may be best. I asked for feedback from those in Australia and South Africa, but none has come, perhaps because they receive our mail in Digest form. We have not yet come to a decision for future years. If you skipped my 2 messages, they will be on the opening page of the archives as recent mail under the subject I have repeated on this email. Choosing a date like the 3rd Sunday in June (though that has not been cast in concrete, yet) means that some people will be able to celebrate lace in most, but not all, years. This idea is better than setting a firm date. http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html Sorry, but I do think like a person working in an international business, because I worked in AT&T's International Division before retirement. Though that was 21 years ago, the lesson has stuck. Telephones - and computers - connect us 365 days a year, and people behind the scenes make that happen. Thinking along the same lines, there is a need for all kinds of people, like those who administer medical assistance, 365 days a year, also. We Americans have to bend a little and consider priorities in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America who are reading Arachne mail. Re: [lace] June 21 International Lace Day
Yes, Devon and Jacquie. Jean Leader has pointed out: The first UK National Lacemaking Day was actually on 14th September 1991 - thereâs a report with photos in âLace" 65 (January 1992). When I read about this, I wondered why all national lace guilds could not agree on a date. There may be a conflict with some other holiday dates, but if we choose a specific Saturday of a month, the conflict will not be every year. We need to think globally. That way, we could all be committed to the same day. Following an agreement, we could consolidate publicity and financing, casting an all-encompassing lace net over the world. As Jacquie suggests: The 1st or 2nd Saturday of a month would perhaps work better. September is a fairly decent climate date for most who would be out and about at lace demonstration venues. Australians and South Africans: Please weigh in on this time of year for you. (your weather in September would be like the Northern Hemisphere's weather of early March). Those who celebrate people of prominence in lace history (like St. Catherine's Day) could still do so, but we have the very existence of lace to protect for the future and need to be unified in our agreement. Perhaps this could be on the agenda at OIDFA's Congress, and agreement would then come by a unified vote - in person - of representatives from all nations in attendance? Arachne could be one of the information-sharing vehicles. There is strength in numbers. An organized effort might be covered by media on all continents where there are lace makers, and public attention tends to attract the young. We need to think seriously about this. Everyone, please remember to wear a piece of lace when you are out and about promoting lace making. Repeating here my old suggestion of a small lace doily worn near the shoulder, held in place with a pretty brooch that does not penetrate lace threads. It will look like a corsage might. Be careful with safety belts in autos, choosing the shoulder not secured by the shoulder part of the restraining device. A lace-wearing commitment need not be expensive.
