[lace] LED lighting
Before I went away on my recent trip I asked about LED lighting in relation to lacemaking with a view to possibly changing some of our lighting in our home and maybe for our trailer caravan. We went to a Motorhome show and rally and there i got graphic first hand knowledge of the difference it might make. We bought a couple of strip lights to replace the caravan ones and changed just one of them (something to do with the way the electrics worked, but the light from just this one lamp made a huge difference to the visual difference in the caravan. Amazing and for once I said WOW, :-) So I think some investment in those bulbs will happen in our household over the coming months. Thank you all for the input then, no need to restart necessarily but thought you might like my feedback. I will second what Susan Hottle said about her Ott LED mobile task light. Some ladies in our EGA guild also came home with some of them and really raved about them. It seemed just the thing for traveling! I took mine to the 2011 IOLI convention in Bethesda because I had limited room in my suitcase. During my morning class (Flanders with Vera Cockuyt) it just didn't seem like it shed much light. I hadn't even used it that much before, so the thought of low batteries never entered my mind! DUH! Luckily for me, I checked my raffle ticket numbers during the lunch hour to discover I was a winner! There sitting on the table for the choosing was an OTT light! The kind you PLUG IN and flip up! Who cares if it's teal blue! (Never have seen one in that color before!) It saved the day for me because my afternoon Tonder class used much finer thread! I have since realized the batteries needed changing, but again, with hardly any use, it doesn't seem like it sheds much light. You would think that 3 AAA batteries would last a little longer with the LEDs. Ironically (or not?) I won another lamp at a regional EGA meeting. I haven't opened it yet, so maybe I'll donate it as another doorprize. Re: [lace] LED lighting
Hi All, I just got some of the LED lights discussed here, the ones to put in lamps at home. Nobody mentioned the white light yet, I like that. The box says over 75% true for color. I'll be interested to see the next electric bill though I replaced the compact flourescent bulbs so it may not make much of a change. Hello All! For Sue, just to comment on LED fixtures--caveat emptor!! I recently encountered an issue with my Ott LED mobile task light so far I have not found a good answer to the situation. This is a product that I purchased at an EGA seminar in 2011 when I needed additional lighting at the venue. It is a battery operated device that gobbles batteries within a couple of hours rendering it useless. I ended up purchasing an adapter at Radio Shack because Ott didn't make an AC version of this product NOR an adapter! The cost of the adapter was nearly the same as the cost of the light, about $25 +/- each--so not inexpensive. The light is rated for 40,000 hours. A few months ago it quit so I thought I would replace the bulbs--au contraire. These are the non-replaceable style of LED, making the whole device an expensive disposable item. Ott's eco-answer is to send the light to Waste Management for recycling! They also blame the adapter--an accessory that they don't p! rovide or sell--for causing the light to fail before 40,000 hours. In the meantime, I've looked at a lot of lights haven't yet purchased a replacement. The Ott light is the right size to take to seminars/workshops but I don't like the disposable aspect, the lack of an Ott adapter or AC version a blame the other guy attitude. Other lights are not as compact, some have 100,000 hour ratings some have replacement sets of diodes, i.e. the whole head of the light is a replacement part. So far, functionality portability haven't met to meet my needs. If Sue or another Arachnean finds a potential solution, please share! So far, functionality portability haven't met to meet my needs. If Sue or another Arachnean finds a potential solution, please share! Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Erie, PA USA I have a portable lamp purchased from Joanne Fabrics about 4 years ago. It is an led and is battery as well as AC plug in and the adapter comes with the lamp. The lamp has 2 goosenecks, one for the light and one for a 2x magnifier. It has worked well for me and I'd buy it again. It is called Vusion2 Craft Light. Made by the Mighty Bright company. The price on their website is $39.99. I don't remember what Joanne's price was but I had a coupon and thought I got a good deal.
