[lace] Lace at Luton

2006-09-13 Thread Lynn Scott
My mom and her hubbie recently visited a lace museum at Luton in the UK.
These sent me a great selection of photos of the lace and bobbins. They
were directed to the museum by someone in a nearby park and didn't get the
name of the place. Does anyone know the name of the museum as I would like
to use a couple of the photos in the NSW Lace Guild magazine and want to put
credit to the museum, and get their permission.

Thanks, Lynn S

The Luton lacemaker is on the cover of the book by Alice-May Bullock 'Lace
and Lacemaking'.

[lace] Lace at Luton

Hi there Lynn,
Luton has an excellent collection ( and also if you contact the museum
in advance a sizable reserve collection)

Here's the link

Also not that far from Luton is Bedford which has the Thomas Lester
Lace, although both collections are large and you probably couldn't do
them justice if you tried to do both on the same day.

2006-09-14 Thread Sue

Hi Lynn,
You are talking about the Luton Museum & Art Gallery, which is in Wardown
Park. I was born and brought up there but didn't actually know about the
lace in the museum until a few years ago:-) I have visited a few times
since, took my Mum last year too. They do have a fantastic display of lace
and draw upon draw of beautiful lace and old and amazing bobbins.
Luton used to be a hat making area for many years, I like my mum did a
little homework with hat trims at some time while our children were growning
up, but that has almost died out now. But the museum had a section about
that era too, which was one of the things we took mum up to see. the lace
is on the ground floor.
The tiny shop sells pattern sheets which are all being sold to help conserve
the pattern book. My sister sent me a big poster picture which is of A
Bedfordshire Pillow Lace Maker Late 19th Centuary and of a watercolour by
an unknown artist (I believe the picture is in or on the cover of one of the
lace books, can't for the life of me remember which).
