[lace] Lace8 users/Arachne Christmas exchange

2015-12-13 Thread Janice Blair
Jenny is doing a wonderful job on the Facebook Lace8 Users Group that she has
set up.  I have learnt so much from the group and especially from the
wonderful videos that Jenny has been producing,  I love listening to her soft
Australian accent as she explains everything so simply.  If you are
considering using a lace design program in future, you should join the group
for the knowledge that is being imparted there.  Hopefully my future designs
will incorporate working diagrams instead of the written explanations I
usually use.  Thank you Jenny.  Also we need to thank her for the work she
has done on the Arachne Christmas exchange.  I am looking forward to
receiving my card from her.  My other card from Sallie arrived and enclosed
was a dream catcher that will be going on my tree now that I have it up.
I have been using my Lace8 program on my MacBook Pro and have struggled at
times making the Microsoft program do things, so much so, that my family
decided I needed a new HP laptop for Christmas so that I can dedicate it to
Lace8.  WooHoo.  Hope I can remember how to use it after so many years on my

However, as you've found the trick of selecting lines and I hope my

[lace] Lace8

2015-11-18 Thread Ruth Budge
This is a warning to all owners of Lace8. Please do NOT install the
upgrade to Version 1.0.0.51. There is a major glitch in that version which
means that you would be unable to edit most of your files.

Most of you would not need to use the function which that version contained
anyway, so you're safer to stay on a previous version for the time being.

I'm trying to contact the programmer to sort out the problem and I'll let
you know when it is safe for you to upgrade.

Just an idea, but I'll bet that MS Visio would be good for tatting diagrams.
It has a good interface for handling arcs and curves once you get the knack of
it, and you can make your own library (stencils) of motifs.

[lace] Lace8 bummer

2014-01-05 Thread Janice Blair
Hi Robin,
I use Lace8 on my MacBook Pro.  I have something called VisualBox
which brings up the Windows desktop and I can access Lace8 through it.  Some
things are a little temperamental at times but with help, I have managed to
use it. I think I use the fn key and delete at the same time to delete an
element.  Previously I was using Lace RXP through the same VisualBox.  Don't
ask me how to install it all, my SIL did it for me a number of years ago.
Exporting is a pain as I can never remember where to save it to and be able to
access it in Mac.  It takes me several attempts but I think old age has more
to do with it than anything. :-)
Janice

Well I was kind of excited to check
out the Lace8 program.  I don't design
bobbin lace, but I was sure I could use
it for Tatting...And then the bomb
dropped.

I'm beyond disappointed that it
only works on a windows machine.  I'm not
sure I know anyone personaly that
even uses a windows based computer
anymore.  I mean I know people do, just not
in my personal world of artists
and graphic designers. (I have the same
frustration with genealogy
programs) With Mac being the largest computer
company in the world I would
think it would be in the best interest of the
software people to make sure
there was a Mac compatible version.

*SIGH* Guess
I'll stick with Illustrator.

I am still using Lace 2000 and it has just gone on my computer again after a

is great to be able to see your motifs come together and looking like a

What I found disconcerting with the demo was the lack of how to support.
Unless you already have been using their software, there is no way to really
figure out how to do things. For instance, how to change the curve of a fan?
How to undo, etc. I have the demo but besides putting dots, I am really
sort of lost and unable to do anything with it...which has not increased my
desire to invest in the whole package very much.

2014-01-01 Thread Jean Nathan
One simple thing I find very useful in Lace8, which I don't think is in
earlier versions, is the ability to have a picture/photo on the page along
with a pricking. The resize of a background image is also very much easier -
instead of putting in measurements, you just drag handles.

When I'm going to start a new project and it doesn't come with thread path
diagrams, I scan it and put it into the program as a background, resize it to
match the dots and then put all the dots and markings in on one section. I
then add a picture of the finished section to the page and use it to help me
work out the thread paths, which I draw on the pricking. Because my hands
don't always work properly, it's easier for me to put the thread paths on by
computer than by hand - I can undo mistakes easier than Tipexing out the wrong
bits drawn by hand. I adjust the sizes of the pricking and picture so I can
print them on one page for reference while working.

If you're used to the toolbar selection of functions it takes a while to get
used to the right-click on the page way of doing it. Although most other
programs used this method, the way RXP does it gets ingrained into your
brain.

I have no connection with Ilsoft, but really like their lace design program

[lace] Lace8 videos

2013-12-31 Thread Janice Blair
I want to send a public thank you to Jenny Brandis for working on her Lace8
tutorial videos over the holidays.  She makes it simple to understand, even
for someone so computer handicapped like me.  If you have Lace8, check out her

I am using Lace8
on my MacBook Pro through an application called VirtualBox, set up for me by
my SIL years ago.  Sometimes I have trouble doing things, maybe because Lace8
is written as a Microsoft program.  Jenny's videos helped me find the
shortcuts.  I just tried two things, resizing the background and zooming in
and out, which used to take me ages to figure out as I do not use the program
on a regular basis, and I could do them quickly.

It is wonderful to have such

[lace] Lace8

2013-12-31 Thread laceandbits
While Lace 8 is being talked about, can I just say that one of my students
bought it during the summer and asked me to show her a few tricks.  Being now
quite au fait with RXP I thought I can cope with that.

I was able to show her all the basics she needed to get her confidence but I
tried my hardest to find out how to open the tool bars around the screen that I
am used to, as they are so convenient, but couldn't.  Speaking to Ian (Mr
Ilsoft) at Solihull he confirmed that this can't be done with Lace 8.
Personally I found it very irritating to keep having to go up to the top tool
bar when I am used to being able to drag the appropriate bars close-handy to
where I am working.

The other thing I don't like/need is that the roseground now comes complete
with holes in the way that only spiders did (those of you who use RXP will
understand what I mean).  As I more often than not put roseground in as an
afterthought to fill odd spaces in ground, these extra holes are superfluous
(and yes, I do know how to remove duplicate holes).

The only other thing I know of is that I understand Ian has reinstated the redo
button, which I had asked him to do in an RXP update as it was in Lace 2000,
but he never got around to it.  This is useful if you have inked in a whole
length of trail then make a mistake.  If you click 'undo' it deletes the whole
trail!  But over the years I have been using it I have learnt to resist the
temptation and go for 'item select' 'delete' instead so this is no longer an
issue with me.

Can any of you who have tried both tell me why I should be using the newer
version, please.  I think I might be missing something important but can't see
what.

RE: [lace] Lace8

2013-12-31 Thread Ruth Budge
I never advise people to change to Lace8 unless they have thoroughly
explored the demonstration version and have some understanding of the
differences between the two programmes. To me, there's no sense in
changing just for the sake of change or for having the most up to date
programme - and I apply that criteria to any computer programme I use. So,
Jacquie, if you're happy with RXP, stick with it.

Having said that, there is a long list of Lace8 features on the ILSoft
website - put there so that people can easily see the main changes.

The emphasis when Lace8 was being written, was on making the programme much
easier to use than previous versions - and I find that, once I've set up the
basics for my design (such as grid angle, Snap to Grid, Show/Hide Grid
etc.,) I can draw a complete design without going anywhere near any of the
Tabs across the top. This is made possible because all the editing
functions are carried out on the screen near the design by use of the
right-click, whereas in RXP, the editing options are on the toolbar.

That has meant that it was necessary to sacrifice the right-click to delete
a dot function which you might be used to in Lace RXP, but compromise is
always necessary in life.

I was so vehement about the need for a Redo button that he didn't dare
leave it out of Lace8 - but it still took me several days of arguing the
case for the change to the Undo button (so that it looks at each dot and
line of a Trail as separate items, rather than a Trail as a whole) before
Ian realised that men and women see things differently, and the Undo button
will now undo a trail one little step at a time! This dot, then this
line, etc., whereas Ian thinks of a trail as an entirety and assumed we
either wanted the trail there or not - he had no concept of drawing it from
scratch and going one or two steps too far. Thank goodness for programmes
like Team Viewer where I could invite him to come and visit the other side
of the world to see how a trail was constructed in steps.

There are great improvements to the way a background picture can be sized,
moved and placed in position, and much more freedom to put multiple pictures
and diagrams on the Lace8 page. As for exporting designs into other
documents - that is now a breeze! One lady I know insisted on sticking to
RXP in order to produce several booklets of her patterns and teaching notes
- and all the time I was urging her to do it in Lace8. After she'd
finished, she bought Lace8 and almost immediately said Oh, I wish I'd
changed before I did that big job - it's so much easier to export patterns
at the correct sizethose of you who know me well will be surprised
to hear that I just buttoned my mouth shut!!

Most of the feedback has been very positive and most people find this
version easier to use. One lady has complained that there aren't as many
motifs and they're not as accurately drawn - but, in fact, they are exactly
the same motifs, with more added, and they are already included in the motif
library, with the ability to add more if you wish.

I won't clog up the list with any more information, but I'm always available
to help if needed.

[lace] Lace8 selecting problem solved

2012-07-04 Thread Jean Nathan
I've solved the problem I had with selecting items in Lace8 for designs done
in Lace R-XP.

Don't know what was going on with not selecting the dots, but that's all OK
now and they're being selected each time I ask. The problem with other items
was because the squares that show an item has been selected aren't all the
same size for all drawing tools in this new version.

Because of they're smaller size than before for a straight gimp, when I
tried selecting a straight gimp, the selecting squares (black) were hidden
by the dots (black). Same with curved gimp. The solution was to change the
colour of the dots to a lighter shade than back so I can see them. Select
all the dots - choose dot drawing tool, right click anywhere in the design
window and Select all Current Type, right click in the design area and
Select all Current Type again and change the colour of the dots to something
lighter than black. I either change the colour of the background dots, or
switch them off.

I found the one drawing tool with the biggest problem was the tally - the
selecting square outlined the tally symbol exactly, so if the tally was dark
it didn't look as if it had been selected.

Hope this helps others with similar problems.

I also like the print preview, having multiple designs open at once,
grouping items, bold lines on girds and drawing twists but I miss the
preview file on opening; the zoom and centre button; all layers on / all
layers off choice; and find it long-winded to do various other things which
were faster in R-XP.

It also has some irritating hiccups - if you try to change a layer it asks
you twice over, and if you try to download a background on a locked layer it
ties the mouse to the design area of the screen and you can't even close the
programme. Beware of that one!!

I would recommend you try the demo version before deciding to buy.

Annoying when you have drawn in a long trail and the lose the rhythm and go

[lace] Lace8

2012-07-01 Thread Jean Nathan
One thing I've had a problem with is selecting items in designs which were
done in R-XP. If I want to delete a dot, I can't do it by right clicking and
I can't mark it with select item. I have to use Group select and then it
will mark it. Same thing happens with other items from a Lace R-XP designs.

What I like about it:

the sliding zoom
quicker way of changing widths and colours of elements
rose ground element looking much better than the previous one
being able to save as JPEGs and PDFs - I found EPS files were extremely
large

easier to set the offset from top and left margins for printing
easier to temporarily remove the toolbar to see more of the design
being able to have more than one design open and copy and paste between them
the general look of the page

Yes, Jacquie.just for you! And Undo no longer takes out the whole trail.

Has the re-do button been re-instated? I understand this was in the first

RE: [lace] Lace8

2012-07-01 Thread Ruth Budge
Jean, as you might imagine, that was one of the first things I tested.
And I've just opened a couple of RXP files to try again, both of which work
OK for me. I use the Item Select button all the time and don't have any
trouble with selecting a particular dot with the Item Select button. I'm
wondering if you'd email me (privately, of course) a file which is causing
you this problem so that I can have a look at it and see if I can work out
why you're having difficulties.

Yes, I miss the right-click to delete a dot. However, the right-click is
now taken up with editing functions to save playing hunt the button on
toolbars all around the screen. It wasn't possible to do both, although
you can select a dot (or a line or whatever) and then right-click on the
screen, then left-click on Delete.

Someone mentioned the missing File Preview - the old system was only
possible because of the way RXP saved all files inside the RXP folder -
which is not a particularly popular place to save files with lots of people.
The new programme has a different filing system, and all patterns are now
saved in a special folder created on installation within the My Documents
folder. We haven't had much success yet at making a file preview system
compatible with the new filing system. Windows 7 offers the preview, but
only for programmes the Windows programmers know about - and Lace8 is not on
their list.
