Re: [lace] Mirecourt

Hello all,

There is also a book on this lace, called Dentelle de Mirecourt, from the
editorial Didier CARPENTIER, published in 2008, with beautiful patterns and
diagrams. Also a short introduction on history. As far as I understand (I
only read French, but don't speak it), it says lace in Mirecourt was
introduced in the 16th century by the dukes of Lorraine.

In 1981 an association to promote the lace was created

I think you can have a quick look to the book here:

Best wishes.

Hello Everybody:

The little bit of text on the page in Antje's link says that the Mirecourt lace
manufacture was started in the 16th century, but the book itself was based on a
sample book from the end of the 19th century, found in someone's attic.

I don't know how early the style of lace we call Mirecourt started. As far as
I know lace was made there fairly early, but we don't know what it looked
like.

Deborah Beever may know something about the history of lace from that area.
If you look at
http://laceioli.ning.com/group/mirecourt-bobbin-lacejust under the group's
icon is a box titled EXAMPLES. Click on the red words, which are links to
photos of the most recent type of Mirecourt lace.

But as I said earlier, I don't know when that style appeared or if it goes
back to 1830. They may have been making lace in 1830, but it may have been a
different type.

Dear Lorelei, et al,
Very clearly from what I was told, they were making lace when there was a
Duchy of Lorraine, and that, I believe, precedes Louis XIV and probably even
earlier. But what kind I don't know. It was exported to non-French
countries. The ladies in the group were very helpful, they have a year-round
presence in Mirecourt, with another building not used so much in the summer.
And they know their history. Of course, for Marks purposes, it is all
immaterial if he finds out his ancestors came from Alsace. But I do recommend
Mirecourt as a place to visit for lacemakers. There is a lot to see, it is a
vibrant area for lace, and the people there are very active. It is probably
as good as Le Puy en Velay. Probably as much lace exhibited, at least in the
summer. I was not in their other location, and so cannot comment on it, but
it was sizeable. lrb

My understanding of Mirecourt lace is that it is a French lace somewhat like
Bruges Bloomwork in that it is more coarse than Duchesse and simpler in
design. But the pieces I've seen are not as simple as Bloomwork. I'm
sending you a photo in a .jpg file in a 2nd email.

There is also a piece in the Milanese collection of patterns from CENTRE DE
LA INITIATION DE DENTELLE DU PUY, one of a group of patterns sets which
Lacis in California used to sell.

I don't know any detail about exactly where or when it started to be made,
other than roughly the very late 19th to early 20th century in France.

Thanks for this website info. Most of the lace depicted there appears to be
Cluny or what I call continental guipure -- straight lace with a braid
ground. But the page http://mirecourt.free.fr/ does show some free laces,
but only parts. Mirecourt is a free lace, as I understand it.
