Re: [lace] rings for lacemaking?
Well I think that the bobbins are mass produced, so should cost about 1 USD / 1 Euro each when new, and the rings may have been for a curtain pole - or as Clay suggested just junk! If you want to see pics of lace bobbins with little rings carved around them (as Patti suggested) have a look at: http://users.argonet.co.uk/users/paternoster/lace/bobbins/specials.html There are two such bobbins about 3/4 of the way down the page. Aah! now this link does take me to bobbins!! My advice would be - if you're interested in the bobbins, buy them, and plan to throw away the rings!! Well, when I clicked on the link, I got a photo!!! But I agree with Patty that I wouldn't consider anything that there's no photo of. I also found it strange that you have to be a pre-approved buyer, I haven't seen this one before. As the seller gets the money (and can allow cheques to clear) before they part with the goods, why is this necessary - especially for a relatively low cost item? Re: [lace] rings for lacemaking?
Well, from the picture in the second posting you found, I believe that the rings have nothing at all to do with lacemaking in general. It may be that someone designed something which uses the rings as a permanent part of the construction, but without any other information, I'd say those rings are just junk being shipped from the seller's house to your house!! Re: [lace] rings for lacemaking?
Hi, I found someone selling bobbins on eBay: "You are about to bid on 14 new wooden belgian lace making bobbins. There are 4 rings included.". (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=28151&item=8139731075&rd=1) Does anyone have any idea what the rings are for? The seller doesn't know. Weronika -- Weronika Patena Caltech, Pasadena, CA, USA http://vole.stanford.edu/weronika HI Weronika, Rings are a woodturning trick. While turning the bobbins, the woodturner shows off their control and finesse by working a captured ring. English bobbins often have metal rings called jingles. I wouldn't buy anything without a picture to see what you are getting. I have Czech bobbin with a carved captured ring, I'll put a picture up on the Arachne webshots.
