[lace] Thread storage

2020-10-18 Thread Janice Blair
Like Susie I use the car garages. I have five of them. One is for white cotton
threads on one side and linen on the other side.  They hold lots of spools.
Another is just for silk threads, different makes on each side. One for
metallic and specialty threads. One for colored cotton threads and the last
one holds a mixture of sewing threads.  I also have two large square wicker
baskets that sit on the bottom ledge of my bookcase that hold other threads
that won't fit into those boxes and my boxes of pins, the second holds my
bobbins.  I love being able to see the colored threads like a pallet for my
art.  I haven't seen the boxes lately in the stores though.

[lace] thread storage

2020-10-14 Thread C Johnson
I have been enjoying storage for my threads in the "Plano Metal Car Garages"
These plastic storage containers are double-sided and can hold several spools
of thread on each side of the box.
When they were sold as Car Garages, they were relatively cheap, but now that
they are being sold as
thread storage boxes, they are more in the neighborhood of $15.00. I have seen
them on lacing sales tables
but cannot remember who was selling them. My last one was found at JoAnn
Fabrics or Hobby Lobby.

[lace] Thread storage

2020-10-12 Thread LacySuzette
Hello All! My “lace cave” moved recently & I was faced with larger, deeper
drawers that are more difficult to subdivide. The Plano fishing boxes I use for
metallics are expensive & not really conducive to separating various size
spools of cotton, linen, silk & other fibers. What to do? As I opened my
recycling bin to discard a plastic berry box, I stopped dead in my tracks! Was
this a FREE (!!) & easy alternative to plastic boxes at The Container Store?
Berry boxes come in several sizes, they’re stackable & there’s an unlimited
supply because we eat berries every day. All I had to do was wash them out,
although there is a gel sticky pad in the smallest that it is easily removed.
I posted a photo to Arachne Flickr so you can see how it works. Smallest is
raspberry/blackberry size, 6oz/170g. Medium is blueberry 1 US pint/551 ml &
large is strawberry 1 US Lb/454g. Containers are clear plastic so you can see
what’s inside. Hope this is helpful to others who want to ta!
me their threads! Sincerely, Susan Hottle, FLA, USA

No. That would be a good thing for larger balls of thread. The one I purchased
from Walmart is called Jammers Stores Your Collection with 48 bays for mini
cars. Similar to one I found on eBay #160176995154 except mine was $4.99.

Another option for thread storage is the "Art Bins", sold by JoAnn Fabrics and
lots of other retailers. I've recently bought a supply of the larger "ArtBins"
for quilting projects. They have several types of boxes. The ones I use for
quilting projects are their large boxes with no internal divisions. They have
a smaller box which has horizontal divisions and a supply of secondary dividers
which can create slots for any number of objects (threads, for example). The
larger box also has an option of coming with a set of thread holders. I have
found that these aren't particularly helpful for my quilting threads, and the
entire box may be "overkill" for the silk threads I have for lace. However,
the thread holders are removeable, so the box is still useful - although
entirely overpriced when it contains the holders. In fact, the "ArtBins"
series is pricey, period. However, JoAnn's has numerous sales in which they
offer their plastic storage at 50% off, and this is when I
  buy t
hese boxes. At $14, they're outrageously priced. At $7, I'm willing to
splurge.

Yes, that's it. In my BL days (before lace), I did
lots of fancy freemotion sewing. I had 150 colors of
thread to keep sorted. These boxes were great. I put
a general color group on a side. Separate box for
metallics. I could see the color through the sides so
the right box could be pulled from the shelf.

Most of these threads were rayon so they don't work
well with lace. However the metallics box has
migrated to my lace supplies.

These boxes take lots of space on a store shelf, so
look for a pile at the end of a row, in the aisle (at
Walmart), or ask a clerk. This is the time of year
when toy-related things are stocked up. They are less
expensive at Walmart than on the webpage noted above.

Hi Janice and all,

I am so glad to hear others are finding the "thread garage"...you recall,
Janice, we first carried this "hint" in our Hints column in the L.A.C.E.
newsletter - Spring 2007, Issue page 5. This is another good reason to
become a member of L.A.C.E. Our newsletter carried lots of information
along with guest lace designers.
Personall I have five "thread Garages" (5) of them in operation, divided
much like Janice divided hers. You can't beat that price for such a
convenient storage option and threads are quickly viewable.

Do you need any smaller boxes for the flowers, I have some that are
available for the giving...

I was asked to take my silk threads to my guild meeting on Wednesday for
color comparison to match a wedding dress. Instead of just taking 3 or 4
spools I decided to take my whole silk collection. I have it stored in one
of those matchbox garage storage boxes from Walmart. It is so handy as it
can open on both sides, has a carrying handle and has 24 slots each side.

On the way home today I popped into our new Super Walmart and looked in the
toy department. I couldn't find them and then I spotted a whole pile of
them on the very top of the shelves. I had almost given up looking, having
gone down the toy car aisle twice. have all my Gutterman silk on one side
and the other brands on the other side. It takes the small DMC spools but
not the supersize ones. My DMC tatting thread is too fat except for the
size 90. I have put almost all my cotton spools on one side and my linen
ones on the other. I should have bought two. I now have lots of empty
smaller boxes but they are coming in handy for storing the flowers that are
arriving for convention. The storage boxes cost $4.99 so I think that is a
good deal.

2005-06-12 Thread Susan MacLeod
After reading about various methods of storage, I remembered a case I had
gotten for my sewing thread at JoAnns. It's made by Sulky and is designed
for their rayon embroidery threads. I have now found that it is the
perfect size for the Gutermann silks and the Londonderry linens. It is a 2
piece case with room for 104 spools. I used a coupon when I got mine, it
retails for $24.95. It should be on their web site, Art. 885

http://www.sulky.com

As an aside, I've had fun watching the overflowing nest of phoebes on the
back of my garage. It's easily visible from the bathroom, and the
binoculars make me feel a bit like a 'peeping tom'
