Hi Babs,

I know Biggins do patterns and kits for 'all lace' tablecloths
(www.bigginslace.co.uk).

Happy lacing,

Bromley lacemakers made 5 inch torchon squares and made them into a lace
cloth, with a lace border. It was then raffled in aid of St Christopher's
hospice. The patterns for 12 squares (and a black for you to design your
own) were then sold as their "Millennium Project Raffle Book"

Another lace cloth project was the Solace Tablecloth in aid of St Peter's
Hospice, again in torchon.

Maybe someone on the list still has stocks of these booklets

Somebody jump in here.years ago there was a lady in NOL ...I want to say
Francis Sweeter, who made table cloths by making strips of various Torchon
patterns joing each as she went along ( I think). They were very nice and
looked usable and strdy.
I have the directions for another, from the Lace Guild Mag, that is much the
same only this was done in ever enlarging squares.

Babs give me a little time, after breakfast and I will look these up for you.
I am sure I still have them on tap

  Hello to all,

I'm looking for a large pattern for a tablecloth. I know that this will be
a
mamoth project but I would prefer a pattern which is "all lace" instead of
  inserts.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find one - I must be honest and
say
that I prefer Torchon lace to any others but anything would be great.

  Thanks in advance.

  Regards, Babs

Hi Babs,

Answering to your message: >>I'm looking for a large pattern for a
tablecloth. ...I would prefer a pattern which is "all lace" instead of
inserts.

If you would like it all in one piece. this means it will require
thousands of bobbins! I have only once seen an inmense bolster pillow in
Portugal, where three women were working at the same time, making a veil for
a bride.

Well, I suppose this is not your intention. My suggestion is to make the
tablecloth in pieces: stripes, squares or a mixture of both. In this case,
you don't need to find a pattern in a book (which can be quite difficult, I
think). You can "create" it yourself. You only need to find a torchon
pattern that suits you (edging and insertion), combine and enlarge it. (I
would work the tablecloth in thick thread, but that's a personal thought).
Then start working the pieces and sewing them together as you work.

Here in Spain we frequently make shawls (which are about 70 x180 cm) and we
make them in stripes: about 5 stripes of a same pattern, which are sewn
together while working. This could also do for a tablecloth. For a better
finish, you could sew an edging al around.

By the way, how large is the table?

Good luck, patience and energy for your job!

I wanted to make a large lace table cloth and after looking at lots of
patterns plumped for 2 to choose from.

Veronica Sorenson's Modern Lace Designs (sadly out of print) has a fantastic
table cloth which is 54" square and can be adapted to virtually any size.
This works on a centre square that you then make borders around until you have
the full size.

But the one that I'm going to make (I'm winding the bobbins at this time) is
from Bridget M Cook's 'The Torchon Lace Workbook'. Because the centre panel
is a pure square you can make as many as you want for the centre part and
then put the border patterns around them. So, you could make the simple
hearts
and flowers mat which would give you a square mat about 15" square or any
size you like - including if you made the centre squares say 3 x 2 a
rectangular
 mat.

Hope this helps

I am the treasurer of Bromley Lacemakers and I have 25 of these pattern
books. We were selling them originally for £5 each but we are now trying
to get rid of them at the price of £1 each. I am very willing to send
one to anyone interested but obviously will need to charge package and
post to cover Bromley lacemakers costs. Please let me know if you are
interested and send your snail mail details and I'll be happy to send
them out.

There's a picture of a Torchon lace table cloth on the front of Alex
Stillwell's Drafting Torchon Patterns. I'm getting ready for a trip right
now, but if you can wait a week (or until another Arachnid looks it up) I'll
gladly let you know it there's a pattern in there. It's a great book
