Re: [lace] Half stitch in flanders motives
Hello Jo and everyone I think half-stitch in Flanders would be ok for a small area, too much and the design could look odd (but - we suit ourselves!). A Binche piece I'm working on uses half-stitch in discreet places of the motif, and I like the effect. Re: [lace] Half stitch in flanders motives
Jo, A number of old Flemish laces I've worked or seen in books have small areas of half stitch. In my experience the challenge (pitfall?) is making a neat transition between the surrounding cloth stitch and the half-stitch areas. I don't believe I have seen half stitch by itself (i.e., an entire motif with ring pair) but if the motif were not too complicated in shape, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Please post pictures and report on how it turns out, whether a success or not! Re: [lace] Half stitch in flanders motives
Hi Jo - If you go to my photos in Webshots, there are two or three pictures of Brugge, the Flanders piece designed by Anne-Marie Verbeke-Billiet. They are near the end of the folder. This piece has three clouds in the sky, and each is worked a little differently. Actually, Anne-Marie's plan was for two techniques, but I was working the second one when I realized that I had mis-read the color of the first one and worked it in a way she had not intended! So... my version has three different treatments. Please post pictures and report on how it turns out, whether a success or not! Don't hold your breath. I'm not Speedy Gonzales. Even if successful it won't be as stunning as Clay's project. It was worth to recover the password for a magnification, thank you so much Clay for the close up. It is convincing and very informative. I guess I'll play with the mystery of the half stich of the 's Gravenmoers book of the LOKK. Re: [lace] Half stitch in flanders motives
Dear Jo, I do not profess to any real knowledge in this area, other than a beginner's, but if you look on p. 49 of Tierisch Flandrisch book by Inge Theuerkauf, you will see that the foot of the teddy bear is done in half stitch, with gimp and ring pair. It is not diagrammed as such, from what I can tell, but the picture is clear that there is half stitch. Different from Clay's outstandingly stunning clouds in her Bruges picture, but a choice nonetheless. Also, on p. 59 of the same book is an example of shading in a cloth ground motif simply using extra twists very effectively to give a 3D effect. A better example of this might be on p. 61. With these choices you might have lots and lots of fun with the sky. How about silver gimp, or a silver thread in the gimp? Not quite a lining, but the intent is there. Also, if it were I, which I know it is not, I would make the seagulls higher, simply because you almost never see seagulls so low down to the water. Fits in the handkerchief edging, but if you're making a picture with high clouds and such... Lyn in Lancaster, where it is COLD finally. 30F, -1C, but a wind chill of 21F, -5.5C. No snow where I am. Re: [lace] Half stitch in flanders motives
Hi Jo The only pitfall I can think of is organizing the half stitch in the motif. Remember that in Flanders the worker in each row changes and becomes a passive while another worker takes over. If you can manage to do that type of change over then it should be fine. Experiment.
