Re: [lace] Music and Lace

2011-07-10 Thread The Lace Bee
For me it's not the lace that the people wear but the fact that lace is in the
way that it is made musical.

For sometime I've thought that the scoring for music is very much like our
prickings.

And the way that I manipulate the bobbins is for me similar to playing any
stringed instrument or even the piano.

Just a thought

Dear all ,

Would there be someone among you who can see a connection between lace
with music?

Lace in the opera? Lace on conductors or composers?

Was lace important when people listened to music?

How was lace connected to music? Romantic? Status? What about the 19th
century? 20th century?

Who wore lace in connection to music?

Hope to hear from you. :-)
Nathalie

I remember a professional pianist telling me that he had trouble playing
the music of that period until someone explained to him that part of the
style came from the way you had to hold your hands in order to keep
those cuff flounces (name?) out of the way.

Dear Friends,

I understand that David wears lace when he conducts - hopefully he'll
see this and write about it for you!

I wouldn't dream of conducting without it!!
BUT even more relevant than that is the fact that I also wouldn't
dream of making lace without music of some sort playing. Many years
ago now Jana Nicol of Lansing, Michigan (former Arachnid still on
Facebook) sent me a CD of some local group playing the most beautiful
music to make lace by. I could dig it out - but I do know that it's
mainly flue and zither.

anyone is interested!! - in which case, contact me privately...)

A number of years ago they put out a second CD, too. Can't remember what
it is called.

2011-07-08 Thread Nancy Neff
Nathalie,

Yes, although this may not be what you had in mind: the connection
I see between [bobbin] lace and music is the interweaving of threads/musical
lines to make something ornate, especially in the music of J.S.Bach, Vivaldi,
Albinoni, Gabrielli, etc., or the great pieces of polyphony such as by Thomas
Tallis.

Not sure what to make of other kinds of lace or other kinds of
music...
