[lace-chat] hurricanes and such

2003-10-06 Thread Helene Gannac
Margot, your email reminded me why we selected not to move from our present
suburb after all! We live in one of the no-quite-outer suburbs of Melbourne, in
an area which is not quite hilly, but rather gently ondulated, and about 80m up
from sea level. We discussed in the past moving to one of Melbourne south
suburbs, which are on a plain, and close to the sea, as DH's children were
always wanting to go to the beach at that time. Since it took us one hour each
way, and a lot of hassle looking for a carpark together with another 2 million
Melbournians or so, we didn't go to the beach very much. However, all our
friends live down that way, so we always have to drive a long way to go see
them, and vice-versa.
We lost all interest in moving when talk about the Greenhouse effect started to
be backed up by statistics, and it became evident that the regions near the
beaches would be under water very quickly if the ice at the poles started to
melt! In fact, the city centre will probably be under water very quickly too!
So there we are, still on top of our little hill, and not likely to move soon.
And we are very thankful we don't have to worry about hurricanes in Melbourne
at present even though we do get some very bad storms, and many areas of
Melbourne do get inundated. We are also fairly safe from bushfires, the other
plague of Australian weather, since we are not close to any unconstucted area.
We do have a few parks, and I guess our house could catch fire any time, since
it a weatherboard one, but no bush.

Helene, the froggy from Melbourne, counting her blessings and wishing all
weather sufferers the best of luck. And hoping mankind will be smart enough to
do something to correct past errors before it is too late!!

tried to calculate how high the basement was above the high tide mark.
I figured we'd be okay (and I was right) but I got dressed and packed an

Re: [lace-chat] Philosophical Question

2003-10-06 Thread H. Muth
Thanks to all who wrote me about my philosophical question. I have sent in
my essay and my characters argued over a flat earth. I don't know how long
it will be before I get me grade. Hopefully, it will be a good one ! :)

[lace-chat] firewall fun

2003-10-06 Thread Needlelace
Thank you to everyone who helped me with this situation.
I have learned there are two types of firewalls: hardware (routers) and
software (Norton and XP) I am told hardware is more dependable than software
firewalls. ( I know two people who have had Norton spontaneously disable.) Because
of the spontaneous issue, I have elected to install a router and activate XP's
firewall. I am told I do not need both, but I am paranoid. I also have
installed the new 2004 Norton antivirus. Hopefully my e-mails will be sent faster
then the e-mails using Norton's firewall. (I considered placing a bobbin lace
pillow by the computer -I figured a simple baby edging would add up fast to
yardage. Last year I tatted 7 yards of lace waiting for kids and using those
wasted minutes. Yikes!!! That *is* a lot of wasted time!!) On a frustrating
note-this is the second time I have typed this-my computer shut down it's wireless
connection.
Well, here goes.

[lace-chat] ALG Triennial awards

2003-10-06 Thread Helen Bell
Please excuse this please, but this is for any of the Aussies who may have
been to the Australian Lace Guild's AGM and classes this past week.

Mum and I are just dying to know more details about her wins that Ruth
mentioned yesterday in a posting. No-one's contacted Mum with any info, and
so she knows nothing more than what she saw on the list.

If there's someone who has details, could you please email either myself or
Liz Ligeti (or just post to the list, if people don't mind) - and please put
us out of our "misery"?

Thanks so much!

Cheers,
Helen, Liz Ligeti's daughter, living in gorgeous Denver, where it's supposed
to be 80 again today :-)

Hi spiders
A quick query which I'm hoping our New Zealand friends may be able to help
with. Can anyone tell me for which newspaper/magazine Margaret Christensen
writes a weekly article called Midweek - By The Way? I'm trying to locate
the exact provenance of an article on the Battle of Britain lace panel that
was sent to me by her but it didn't include this information.
Please reply direct. Many thanks.
